Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by jnschicago on Jan 21, 2009 23:52:31 GMT 1, I haven't posted in a while so I thought I'd share this recent experience.
I was lucky enough to attend the Inauguration in D.C. this week. Coincidentally, a good friend of mine, Ray Nolan a.k.a. CRO (see , was selected to participate in the Manifest Hope gallery show in D.C. This was a traveling art show that was hosted by Obey/Shep Fairey and hit all of the key cities during the campaign.
On Monday night, they had a big party in Georgetown. Moby was Dj'ing. De La Soul performed. Etc. The place was packed and there was a bunch of great Obama artwork lining the walls including David Choe, Ron English, Shep Fairey, etc.
Anyway, my friend Ray was one of the most prominent artists in the entire show. His work was placed right inside the front door between David Choe and Ron English. Nonetheless, he was allocated a total of 2 tickets for friends/family. Plus, his guests were expected to use the back door. Rather than come through the front which was reserved for celebrities and media.
When we arrived, we were told that we probably wouldn't get in because they were closing the doors to everyone except members of the media and celebrities. Note, it was 9:30pm and the party started at 9:00pm.
We managed to plead our way inside just in time to hear Shepard address the crowd. What follows is almost an exact quote of what he said. "Hi. I'm Shepard Fairey. I'm a street artist, okay? I've been arrested like 14 times. My work is illegal. But, props to the Obama campaign for allowing me to spread his message through my work. I hope everybody has fun tonight. We have De La Soul performing! I mean, these guys have been famous for like 20 years. It took me 20 years to get as famous as they are!! Anyway, good night!"
If it's not clear by now, this guy couldn't have sounded like a bigger jerk. I must admit, the experience reinforced everything I suspected about the guy which is...he is a business person first, media whore second and artist a very distant third.
It should also be noted that my friend displayed at the same Manifest Hope show in Denver (during the Democratic Convention). Spike Lee walked in and saw my friends work. He immediately agreed to buy the whole wall. We later found out that Shep didn't want to be eclipsed by anyone so Spike Lee was told that it was already sold. This, of course, was a total lie. And, my friend ended up taking all of the pieces back home with him.
Thought you guys would appreciate the story regardless of your opinion of Shep/Obey.

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by robo on Jan 22, 2009 0:56:10 GMT 1, Can't comment on the business stuff, thats between your friend and the gallery, but actually I thought from your quote he spoke well - saying that it took him 20 years to get as famous as De La Soul have been for 20 years was pretty self-deprecating and modest...

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by jon11 on Jan 22, 2009 1:19:29 GMT 1, nice post John - thanks for sharing - he does indeed sound like a right cock. the simple methodical style of his does nothing for me - pop portraits with not much other artistic originality inspiration or magic - just picks someone in vogue iconic or he wants to suck up to and hits em with the filter. jog on shep - you're a million miles away from being on a platform with De La Soul. I realise this is a little reactionary not necessarily a fair summation - i haven't mentioned his propaganda political and charity works - which for the most cant be denied the good intentions - whether he's building karma or an image - i dont know anyway i dont like his work and never have - piece said - shep fans feel free to put the matter straight - it's all only my very uninformed opinion - i just dont like the art style

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by remirough on Jan 22, 2009 11:31:48 GMT 1, I've met Shep on many occasions and he's cool as fuck. I don't (and I hope no one else does), pay attention to people pulling other people apart on internet forums. I doubt he needs to worry about eclipsed by anyone... sounds like rubbish to me.

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by robotoil on Jan 22, 2009 18:39:12 GMT 1, Sounds like you haven't been following the course of Shepard Fairey's career for that long. Do you know how long Shepard Fairey has been doing his art? At least since 1995. And, now that he's found some long overdue recognition you want to knock the guy for a modest 20 second self introduction?
It's sadly interesting from a psychological point of view how an artist's modest success can bring out the hater in some people. Hating on an artist is really pathetic. Like the art or hate the art. It's art. You should direct some of that negative energy to combating world hunger or something. And that bit about Spike Lee sounds like total rubbish. Why doesn't your friend contact Spike directly to make the sale? Joke.
Hey, but I really appreciate your story. Props to you for finagling your way into an exclusive well heeled club.
Oh the irony.

what he said i dont think is that bad - was a party to celebrate when people do that they sometimes get carried away but sure he didnt have bad intentions...
...SL would not let "there all sold" get in the way of him purchasing... he would have asked or got his people to ask for the artist details....s

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by chief on Jan 22, 2009 20:53:14 GMT 1, John when was the last time you gave a speech in front of a sold out crowd? I could imagine Shep had a few butterflies, I don't think he literally was saying "hey I'm famous" It sounds to me like a nervous statement in which he tried to make a joke by taking himself down a peg or two. And you obviously hate the guy since you hear him say something and run to the forum to get people on your side against him. Appreciate all the work the guy does, he has a right to be famous. If Warhol or Banksy said they were famous you wouldn't think twice.

Shep Fairey @ Obama Inauguration, by A.R.T. on Jan 22, 2009 23:18:02 GMT 1, johnstoops- you are an idot. Shep is one of the most humble and coolest people I have ever met. I actually went to the Manifest Hoe:DC (and Denver as well) show as well, and talked to Shep. What was so awesome about the expierence was that he came to talk to me. I was standing in line to take a picture with his fine art piece when I noticed him. I thew him a peace sign and he crossed the velvet rope and came to talk to me for a few minutes. It sounds like you are pissd for some wierd reason. Get over it.
