Fairey Creates Propaganda Designs for Saks , by Pure Evil on Jan 12, 2009 12:31:22 GMT 1, Fairey Creates Propaganda-Inspired Designs for Saks 5th avenue (department store)
NEW YORKโIn the face of a still-sinking economy, Saks Fifth Avenue is preparing a bold marketing campaign for the spring, the New York Times reports.
The luxury-goods store hired street artist Shepard Fairey, best known these days for his ubiquitous Obama Hope poster, to design its catalog covers and shopping bags for the coming season. Fairey responded by creating a line of imagery modeled on the work of early-20th-century Russian Constructivist designer Alexander Rodchenko, known for his graphic, propagandist posters. Fairey said he also looked at morale-lifting agitprop posters made for the Works Progress Administration in the 1940s.
The Saks designs include a red, white, and black shopping bag emblazoned with the slogan "Want it!" in a bold black, white, and red and an ad featuring the text "Arm yourself...with a slouchy bag" that shows a model with such a bag raising one fist.
โSome people might think it could be making fun of whatโs going on right now,โ Fairey said. โBut I think most people are sophisticated enough to realize itโs a way of grabbing attention. Itโs commerce. I donโt think there is really any political statement embedded in this.โ
โWhat we do every day, really, is propaganda,โ said Terron E. Schaefer, the senior vice president for marketing at Saks.

Dont see whats so bad about this, Shepard Fairey is also a graphic designer and runs studio number One, his design agency. It's just something else he does, no suprise really. Hat off to him for being a talented commercial designer as well as a great artist. IMO of course.

How is this selling out ? What a load of crap , Os Gemeos with Nike, Choe/Flores etc Addidas, Neate with Prada the list is endless. Im sure Shep is worried about all the doubters and haters he is probably the busiest artist in the world at present. What ever you think about his work he has always had a clear vision and message in his work.

How many of "our" artists would have turned this offer down?

Fairey Creates Propaganda Designs for Saks , by snausages on Jan 12, 2009 17:12:49 GMT 1, That clear vision was to be Sak's design agency?
Well some certainly would have, especially for Saks. How many of "our" artists would have made a 'career' out of anti-corporate, anti-establishment imagery, ...and then choose to be graphic design boy for one of the most exclusive retailers in the world? I see it more like Fairey simply is a graphic designer.

I'm sorry but this gets annoying every thread.
Dude didn't sell out because he never had rules to follow that said what he could and couldn't do. He's a "graphic design fine artist" which makes his stuff more accessible espc for ads and things of that nature. I could see if Banksy did a Saks ad campaign that'd be a whole other story but Shep is one of the few who can do this kind of stuff. He also makes it easier for other artists to get noticed by putting "street art" out on the forefront the way he does. Aside from Banksy Shep was one of the other artists that made me take noticed and now I'm head deep into the art world and I'm very happy bout that. Sure Green Day sold out but aside from making great material they also put a generation of kids onto real punk.

Fairey Creates Propaganda Designs for Saks , by snausages on Jan 13, 2009 3:19:56 GMT 1, The hell many of you would have given Keith Haring. I'm not a huge Haring fan but (as far as I'm aware) Haring never mocked or made fun of consumer culture like Fairey has. Here's one of many such examples by Fairey, the "Obey Consume Repeat" poster ...and then he comes out with a line of designer bags for a high end retailer. It's yet another really bad joke.
But I'm tired of talking about Fairey, and bringing up Haring is an interesting point, it's worth taking a look at his thoughts on art and commerce. banksyforum.proboards82.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=31478
The truth is Haring did get a lot of sh*t for "selling out." Personally I'd give him a little more leeway because in my eyes his pop up shop was as much art installation as it was store and I feel like most of his commercial work was true to his artistic vision.

Fairey Creates Propaganda Designs for Saks , by raiden on Jan 13, 2009 4:49:15 GMT 1, Though last week I was complaining about Fairey's "Adopt" Dog poster... on this one, more power to him.
If you attack Fairey for this, where does that leave Murakami?
Fairey has answered the "sell out" charge time and time again - mainly by saying he's a graphic artist and self funded and does commercial graphic art commissions to finance his other activities ... namely a rather prolific wheat pasting operation even to this day that landed him in the clink for a night in August.
It is interesting to see the new era of Shepard Fairey now that he's arguably the top American pop / urban artist. While I will concede that I've been a bit disappointed with some of Sheaprd's moves post Obama print, I do think the charge of sell out is unwarranted and unfair - largely because he has been pretty consistent with his personal philosophies.
As for snausages post...
I would contend that Sheps been just as true to his artistic vision as Haring. From day one, Shep has been about pushing the limits of street branding and subverting commercialism.
Not to get too philosophical... But using Sheps own words...
In his 1990 manifesto, Fairey wrote that โthe Giant sticker campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Heidegger describes Phenomenology as โthe process of letting things manifest themselves."
Consequently, if you view Sheps work as this experiment in "Phenomenlogy," Shep has been remarkably consistent from day one in manufacturing imagery that causes people to contemplate the juxtaposition of dominant paradigms with subversive messages - while manufacturing artistic phenomena.
The cop out is simply saying because we're talking and dissecting this, Shep has been consistent with his artistic philosophy.
