I'm curious as to why you think that image is "crap." Personally, I'm rather fond of it and like to hear what criteria others use to determine whether an image is great or bad. Or are you referring to this specific canvas, ie that the image appears crooked and haphazardly stenciled onto the canvas lowering its value? From my vantage point, that painting at $60k is a steal and I would very much like to learn why this item hasn't skyrocketed north of $100k. I'm probably biased as I'm an avid shark lover/photographer so perhaps that's why this image strikes a chord with me. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Original Barcode Painting Anyone?, by dotdot on Jul 29, 2008 17:12:35 GMT 1, It's an interesting piece - way out of my range and probably a few folks on ebay.com as well.
Whilst the description of the work is quite solid the photo isn't selling the image.A few photos would more than suffice.
If i had that kind of money burning a hole - ebay wouldn't be the place and that photo wouldn't help.

It's the barcode shark and it is unfortunately at an awkward angle on the canvas but the stencil is the same as this and I've always LOVED all of the barcode images:

Original Barcode Painting Anyone?, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 29, 2008 17:28:04 GMT 1, I like this piece and would like to see some better photos of it. Barcode has always been one of my favourite prints of his and this is a nice twist on it. It appears very reasonably priced at ยฃ30k, based on what little I know of previous canvas sales at auctions. Seems to me that the guy is under-selling it and ebay is not the best place for such a piece. He is also being pretty negligent imo, buy selling such a piece independently, without a PC certificate in hand.

If he's got the original recepit and can put the buyer in touch with the gallery owner, that's pretty damn convincing. It does have the orange stencil and measures the exact same size as those paintings in that show. It certainly looks authentic to me and if, as a buyer, the seller lived up to his representations, I would have no worries regarding the eventual Pest Control authentication.
Regardless, back to my original question- why do any of you believe this image or canvas is inferior to some of his other work?

Original Barcode Painting Anyone?, by rosstierney on Aug 7, 2008 16:33:36 GMT 1, the seller has ended the listing & put it back up @ $120,000
"NEWEST UPDATE: This is the third time I've listed this piece and now I intend to keep it going until somebody offers me more than the auction houses self proclaimed "VERY conservative" opening bid valuations or until I submit it for official auction in the next month or so.
To everyone that hit me up in the last few weeks: I'm not trying to be greedy or a dick here folks. Just understand that when I first listed it at $60k I was offered up to $75k by eBay folks. When I listed it at $80k I was offered $100k. When I reached out to the auction houses I got back valuationsโฆ well, letโs just say I was blown away. So why in the hell would I take anything less than their opening bid valuations??? Would you??? "

Original Barcode Painting Anyone?, by lee3 on Aug 7, 2008 16:56:16 GMT 1, I've spoken with the seller multiple times and backed away. I wasn't particularly fond of the painting on an angle but was willing to go to $70k initially but then revised it to $65k after some thought and finally just said screw it. He has since contacted an auction house who gave a rather agressive estimate but the seller wants cash so when he did the math, it wasn't working out with what he wanted to net (which WAS $80k). He amatureisly blind copied anyone who had shown interest in the painting the auction house's proposal which didn't do him any favors. I replied to him and said that wasn't the wisest choice and he retorted that he was new to selling (obviously) and was just hoping that I would raise my bid by $5k cash to get it done.
I'm not doubting the authenticity of the piece but this guy is trying to levereage anything he can to sell his painting. He wants cash (presumably imo) to avoid reporting the sale so $80k in cash is prefereable to a $150k (i don't think it would ever hit that # but he did the math just to be sure) sale at auction once buyers and sellers fees are deducted and he pays the appropriate fed/state taxes over his original $250 price/basis. He lives in CA and if you really want this painting I think it can be had for $75k cash. He's come back to me multiple times with stories of 4 different $80k cash bids and I told him to take them, only to be followed up the next day with a note that my offer may be the best since he can drive it to me and not wait for someone to come to him. I've told him good luck and that I'm no longer interested and even corresponded with the auction house who was none too pleased with the sellers approach to broadcast a bid to leverage his own position.
IMO, it's amateur hour with this guy but if you are REALLY interested in the painting (i just couldn't get over the fact that the canvas was at an angle but that is up for each individual to decide) I bet you can get it from him if you offer $75k cash and agree to get it from him in the next week. Good luck and obviously make sure you have it authenticated before turning over your money but the painting does appear legit.

I gotta tell you, if I was genuinely interested in this piece I wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot pole now. Anyone seriously considering the painting is not going to put in a bid because they are going to assume he is just going to keep jacking up the price. This listing is a circus, not an auction.

Original Barcode Painting Anyone?, by RBK on Aug 7, 2008 17:15:58 GMT 1, Lee - Nice update. Does seem like a rookie trying to play in the big leagues. I wonder if the auction house will blackball him for that extremely unprofessional bcc.
Plus his rational that a 1/1 of an ok image being better than a 1/5 of some of his best images (Laugh Now or Flower Thrower) doesn't stick at all with this Banksy collector. The piece does appear legit though.
PS: I would also be pissed if I was Grace. Posting her information is yet another unprofessional move

It's apparent he has dollar symbols in his eyes and his greed will kill any deal he tries to get done, just like it did with lee. What a shame.

Great question and one that I've pondered myself many times. I can see an anti-gloabilization message in there as well as a capitalism is the evolution of survival of the fittest message in there too.
But, I think I like the interpretation that "perplexedhead" wrote elsewhere on this board which is "that capitalism is incapable of restraining its own monstrous nature".
