After a few weeks of making TLP and Flying Fortress Live Painting available to the public to view at Black Maria Gallery in At**ter Village, we proudly put it up for auction. A collaboration from The London Police and Flying Fortress. At the opening of "Here We Grow" these artists created these pieces in front of a live audience.

These panels are 8 feet high and 4 feet wide. Per request of the artists, 50% of the proceeds will go to Monkey Sanctuary Trust - a unique environmental charity dedicated to promoting the welfare, conservation and survival of primates.

Absolutely sincere....I have never heard or read anyone provide a justification/ explanation of why they find TLP good in any way. Any discussion about him/them revolves around the free-hand drawing of a circle..this has nothing to do with artistic merit...IMHO they just seem to be dull, repetitive variations upon the same childlike doodles.....over to, well, anyone who can say explain why they are good/attractive/ have merit/ integrity etc etc

gp, absolutely agree with you that each to their own etc...but I am sincerely curious as to why or how anyone likes TLP..what am I missing that makes people find the work, as i said before good/interesting etc....

No dis, but just cos its graffiti can't be a reason (surely) to like it......

Just trying to raise the bar a bit from "that's good " "that's bad": its always interesting to actually know why......

Well although i dont own any pieces of TLP works myself i do find it sort of amusing and happyish to look at, at least the ones i have seen anyhow.

I don't like to get too busy with negging on artists and I've noticed that many on here love TLP's works, but as Nacional has put the cat amongst the pigeons..... I've looked around and found his art pretty same-sameish and uninspiring really and I have to agree with Nacional, quite childish looking. I certainly find the work lacking in anything I seek in a piece of art, but I don't look at it and think anything overly critical, I'm just not attracted to it. The two main things I get from it are that it seems to be based on quite a "positive vibe" type of theme and also an almost 80s retro feel, reminding me of a chav in a shiny shell-suit and sovereign ring and Snoopy cartoons, but perhaps unlike many here, I never owned a shell-suit.

For those who do enjoy it, I hope you continue to take pleasure from it! I'm not knocking you or TLP. In fact quite the opposite, it's all of your different tastes that have brought my favourite artists into my awareness and some even into my living room. I salute you

I've always been a big fan of TLP. Surely the 'positive vibe' is part of what attracts me...how happy and playful his lines, colors and characters are. The different arrangements of the LADS, from what started as a street thing for me, and evolved to a canvas hanging on my wall thing. His reoccurring characters/thematics thrive from their simplicity and inner workings, flowing together in different ways each time he graces the canvas. In addition, he laces each piece with nice detail, similar to that of Jose Parla. While i'm naming names, Faile recycles images like a mother father (I love Faile!). And D*Face, talk about simple repetition (I have mad love for D*). Chaz (TLP) is no different, his lads are just much more simple. And sometimes, with simplicity comes happiness. I think Chaz captures this feeling quite well. Andrew Mcattee also does this for me. They paint big faaaacking smiles. A friend of mine loves TLP (by the way, TLP has consisted of several people over the years, but currently is just Chaz)...what was i saying...right, he loves TLP because he is reminded of Keith Herring. I've never been a big fan of KH, just another example. Hope that helped, but in the end it's probably just not the kind of tea you drink brother man.

TLP have been putting pieces up on the street for years, and the appeal is the fact that it stood out, and was a move in a different direction for street artists. I've been following street art (as I'm sure many have) for years and what I saw TLP do was really refreshing. As with a lot of street work I wouldn't feel the need to buy colour canvasses - for me the best images are the pure B&W lads. Whilst this may not be to a lot of peoples taste they did (and still do) represent how street art changed from purely writing names etc to characters in a new style - showing how broad that street art is

I think the comparison with Keith Haring is a good one. Chaz paints pieces that make people smile. They aren't just childish cartoons though (although the element of naievity is one of the appeals. You really HAVE to see a TLP canvas in the flesh to really appreciate it (although the pictures above do help) because in the background are all sorts of details that simply aren't picked up on screen. There is loads of freehand stuff done on the canvasses, together with pithy comments and doodles.

i got 3 on order, been on order for 6 months was going to get um march now maybe august.
he a nightmare to buy off but really nice guy so i carnt hassle him esp as he may drop off to me.
i carnt wait to get them up 2 x b&w and 1 x colour.
anyone else found him hard to buy off, i carnt wait for his uk shows this year.

Thesewalls - Thanks for that, the close ups of your canvas are nice shots and I can see why you'd be happy with that piece. I agree with you that his smooth, flowing line is actually quite attractive (and must be an art in itself to achieve) and it reminds me of Lucy M, who's work I am a big fan of. I can also appreciate subsequent comments regarding TLP's impact on the street-art scene. I'd love to see a great big street piece in the flesh!

So far as hanging it at home's concerned, it just boils down to one (large) question, which often has many answers: What satisfies each of us most, when looking at a piece of art on the wall? Personally I am open to many different aspects of how a piece can please me (many of the visual pleasures I seek can be very unsophisticated, as betrayed by my liking for Waleska Nomura and Lucy M amongst others) and TLP tends to fall short for me. However those photos are excellent. Thanks for posting them.
