Banksy Surf monkey stencil

[Devizes /\_/\]

Had this a little while and refrained from sharing as 1, it’ll never get any authentication and 2, I know these things can have negative comments on here, but it’s off to be framed next week so thought what the hell lol.

Great provenance, sound back story, Ben Eine said it looked good (but nearly impossible to authenticate) I got this stencil from a former employee and friend of Banksy.
B had stayed with him in Brighton in the early 2000’s and he helped with getting permission for the kissing coppers on The Albert pub (Pic of the kissing coppers stencil from cut and run showing same materials and tapes used).

It even had the paint stained, plastic sleeve it was stored in after various use.
Photos of this surf Monkey vary in small ways from the way the flag leans to other small changes.
Like I say, unless you know the man yourself you’ll never know 100% but the research and provenance that I did first was enough for me to take a punt on it, it’s the hope that kills you but I like it.

I know it will polarise views on here, but after my research I was happy with it regardless, it’s the never know for sure what gives it a bit of edge!
I messed about with coloured card behind it like that pink which really shows the detail but I think I’ll go with something like a sandstone linen so it almost looks like it’s on a wall about to be sprayed, I’ll see what they recommend too!

The backstory and Eine nod will probably be the best you'll ever get, but it's good enough and what a lovely thing to have.

I genuinely appreciate you showing it. This place used to have more of that, odd and early Banksy stuff, then the money came in and folk's arses started to tighten up.

That’s why I like the 10foot and Tox discussions, it seems a little more genuine interest whereas anything Banksy linked is either loved or attacked by people with their agendas, why can’t people just have a normal discussion on stuff without all the shit they want to throw?

And he wasn't even being a "dickhead", as he was first suggesting a very respected member to give his opinion (nothing inherently wrong about that), then say something in support of the authenticity only to ask a legitimate question at the end.

I would like to reiterate what drip said in that many of us (including myself and probably also loui) would love to see your 'framed stencil' - it'll be interesting to see what you'll decide to go with. Please, please don't let people put you off from showing us your proud end-result.

As a relative 'newby', I, too, enjoy reading the various discussions about Tox and 10Foot and seeing all the pictures that kind forum members are sharing about their various throw-ups. Great to see and lets me learn a lot, retrospectively (as I also do about Banksy, of course, who is the reason I'm even on here) ! 😎

This is more like it should be - none of this squabbling over posters.

Have to be honest, that looks a great pickup. The stencil itself like it has been properly used multiple times and add in the bag and also the backstory and I reckon its a winner.

Cut and Run gave you (as in the collective you) the best chance, certainly that we/I have had to spend time looking at some actual stencils/WIP as opposed to just the sprayed up end result.

please do share some pictures of it once it's on the wall - have you been tempted to use it yourself onto a canvas - a cheeky test spray - would that count as an original :-)
