What happened to David Choe??, by barry cilit on Apr 25, 2008 7:27:26 GMT 1,
above is an example of the Garnter Hype cycle. as with both Walker and Choe's (and Micallef's) shows we built up a "peak of inflated expectations" which followed a "Trough of Disillusionment". I feel the "slope of Enlightenment" for Choe will be that of a slow and steady pace as only the true fans will home in on his talents.
Bansky is well and truely on his own Plateau of productivity.

What happened to David Choe??, by skanky on Apr 25, 2008 8:30:04 GMT 1, Perhaps, but I know for a fact that there was still lots of paintings available at the end of the show. God help anyone who bought them.
I dont know where you are getting your facts from , Lee is right the London show sold out apart from I think one painting. I also know this to be fact as my friend bought one large painting, I know of two other people who also bought amazing pieces at your so called inflated prices . As for saying God help anyone who bought them , what a ridiculous think to say to anyone!. Its got nothing to do with you and I just dont see your motives, its shit like this that brings this place down.

What happened to David Choe??, by pezlow on Apr 25, 2008 10:58:18 GMT 1, Prices this prices that yawn yawn. All I can say is that Choe is seriously fucking talented and some of the work that I saw at Laz London for the most recent show was bloody awesome.
All those people saying that the laz prints were poor I find a bit puzzling as well. London girl is great, seedy looks excellent in the flesh, I'm not a fan of Dokebi but I can see why people are.

What happened to David Choe??, by darjeeling on Apr 25, 2008 15:41:50 GMT 1, Nice graphs, and skanky I saw the show very shortly before it came down, for the third time and for what it's worth at least half the works was still available. If it sold out, congrats to Choe for squeezing his fans and Pez I know taste differs but personally but I just have a hard time calling an artist "seriously f**king talented" and "bloody awesome" who paints big asses and guns and uses titles like face fucking fat chick, crying on my boner etc. I'll admit he's got 'some' talent but very immature, way overrated and way overpriced.

It's a good thing no one has a gun to their head and is forced to buy art they don't like.

What happened to David Choe??, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 25, 2008 16:53:26 GMT 1, darjeeling, I see some of your point. I do NOT know David Choe personally, but have seen some of his interviews online. He comes across like a very immature try-hard, with some major inner conflict, which may well be where his artistic impetus originates. I do not like the image he portrays of himself one iota, BUT that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual art he creates imo. I don't buy a piece of art because I like the artist as in 99.9% of cases the artist is a stranger. David is imo one of the finest 3/4 artists in this "scene" right now and along with Neate, Micallef and Banksy likely to make a pretty seamless transition into the mainstream, if he hasn't alreay done so. Top artist, who's works are worth whatever people are willing to pay. Personally I would have thought the prices were high, but if people are happy to pay them they're fair! I'm just glad he's out there doing the work, as although his originals are far beyond my reach, the world's a richer place for them imo, even with the stupid titles!

What happened to David Choe??, by lee3 on Apr 25, 2008 17:10:04 GMT 1, >>>I just have a hard time calling an artist "seriously f**king talented" and "bloody awesome" who paints big asses and guns and uses titles like face f**king fat chick, crying on my boner etc. I'll admit he's got 'some' talent but very immature, way overrated and way overpriced. <<<<
The key word being "I". This has proved to be an interesting thread. Darjeeling, I agree wholeheartedly in your summation that much of his work is immature. I can see how that would upset some whereas I find it rather humorous. As for the big asses and guns, well, I'm desensitized to it I suppose. We're 70 or 80 years removed from Picasso painting nudes of all sort and war scenes that make up some of the most important paintings the world has ever seen. I'm not trying to compare the two artists, just making a point that this is nothing new or earth shattering from a subject matter standpoint. If a title of a painting is going to upset someone, than go for it- part of the point is to get a reaction.
Many of the worlds best artists reflect the culture and society that they've grown up in or surrounds them and often spark a large amount of praise and hatred from their fans and detractors alike. I can't think of any great artist that left thier mark on the world without a heavy dose of skepticism from the public initially. Choe is no different in that regard which is obvious from this thread alone. From my vantage point, what seperates him from the pack is the command of the basics that he has which are simply miles ahead of most. It's kind of like the truly GREAT abstract artists- the best could replicate any scene perfectly if you gave them a pencil and a piece of paper despite the fact that it's not what they do on a day to day basis. IMHO, you have to have that foundation to knock down whatever barriers are there for your art to shine.
I've been collecting for almost 10 years now and I find this entire group of artists so raw and refreshing that I feel like for the first time I'm stumbling onto something new rather than catching up to what has already been done. But I digress, as for Choe's immaturity, the guy is 33 and he's been on the map for over 10 years now. I can't speak for you but I do know that if there was a trail of my tracks between age 20 and 30, immature would probably be the most appropriate term to define it. Unfortunately for my wife, it will probably be the most appropriate term for the remainder as well.

That's a rather simplistic view of choe's work don't you think? There's far more to it that big asses and guns. If that was all that was going on I certainly wouldn't be a fan.
Some of the subject matter isn't my favourite either but the raw talent in pieces like city girl and the series of see no evil, hear no evil pieces are there for everyone to see.

What happened to David Choe??, by spenie1975 on Apr 25, 2008 20:53:31 GMT 1, I love David's work, 1st purchase was city girl 150 and that was it. Bitten by the bug, got London Girl, Driving home(amazing print and detail) then silent dance. Which again I think will not disappoint when it arrives. Bargains are to be had on ebay and as a collector this is surely a good thing. If you buy because you like the image the the secondary market value is of no concern and as said before in no way reflects the quality of his work.
