Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by grisolan on Dec 29, 2023 22:31:35 GMT 1, Lovely members of this forum!
I've been a long term passive member on here as you can see; now I'd like to ask you for your expertise, and I thank you for it! I'm in a dispute with a big publisher about the value of a print. As of now I'd like to keep it anonymous. Maybe at a later point I'll post what this is about.
The question is: what is the difference in value between a signed print and the same, identical print/ image but unsigned.
Thank you!

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by LJCal on Dec 29, 2023 23:10:26 GMT 1, Yeah as above, it also changes all the time. Banksy for example can fluctuate between 1.5-4x deepening on the print and market conditions. I expect some artists would have even broader ranges depending on the rarity of their signature relative to their print market.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by grisolan on Dec 30, 2023 9:02:05 GMT 1, Impossible to say without telling us what print and artist it is. I hear you. Apologies for being this vague, but as I am still in conversation with the publisher, I thought it only fair to keep it anonymous. To protect everybody involved. I don't even know if that is necessary but for the time being I thought it might be best to do so.
Blue chip artist who generally signs all prints. Low edition, immediately sold out. Print sold as signed, arrived unsigned. Now I'm arguing the difference in value.
As you say, Banksy prints for example fluctuate in value when it comes to the difference between signed and unsigned. Is there no rough number one can give as a general rule? 25% less, 50% ,.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by RoboJ on Dec 30, 2023 9:34:23 GMT 1, No there isn’t a general value that can be placed as a rule of thumb. It’s very much dependent on the artist and piece as those above have already mentioned.
I think if the piece is sold as signed and then arrived unsigned it’s either a mistake that could be rectified (not as a % reimbursement but as returned to be signed) or there is something more scrupulous happening. If it is unsigned but should be signed how do you explain this when you come to let it go.

Print sold as signed, arrived unsigned. Now I'm arguing the difference in value. This is strange. If the artist normally signs prints and this was advertised as signed and you were expecting a signed print and they have given you an unsigned print then the question has to be why? Is this a backdoor print from some unscrupulous seller? It just doesn't sound right to me. I would return it and ask for a refund.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by grisolan on Dec 30, 2023 20:54:54 GMT 1, I'd agree this should be returned to be signed. Me too. Publisher refused to do that. The options offered to me were either get a full refund or a discount. Hence my question to the forum!
Annoying in any case.

Are they allowed to do that? They haven't supplied what you paid for. Can't you claim the money back via your bank or credit card? Or threaten to, at least.
I wonder why they won't make the necessary arrangements to replace the faulty piece correctly. Seems off.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by Acme Thunderer on Dec 30, 2023 21:06:56 GMT 1, My advice if you get no resolution from the publisher is to bypass them and contact the artist on social media to make them aware what is happening.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by its all about me on Dec 31, 2023 13:51:08 GMT 1, I don't know who the publisher is but they sound a bit dodgy to me. How are they advertising signed prints and then sending unsigned prints? It makes me wonder if they have printed off a few extra ones behind the artist's back. Artist don't accidentally forget to sign one. All very suspicious.

Signed vs. Unsigned Print, by vic on Dec 31, 2023 15:09:45 GMT 1, A little signatures a nice touch as it means the artist handled the art briefly. I can live with unsigned though. I'd rather an unsigned screen print to a signed digital print in most instances
