Your best 2023 buy!!, by dannubs on Jan 1, 2024 18:01:06 GMT 1, For all of us millennial Pokemon collectors. My favorite purchase was this woodblock, edition of 50. Includes Psyduck so its got my approval.
I only bought the 10foot Dope poster this year but art highlight was more likely seeing the Banksy Cut and Run show, wasn't convinced I'd be able to visit a proper Banksy show before he retired and it didn't disappoint. Wild 24hrs!

Your best 2023 buy!!, by met on Jan 3, 2024 1:10:11 GMT 1, Man, love me some Mr DoodleJust over a tenner including shipping. Arrived the other day. Apologies for the shit photo. [...]
I especially appreciate those whose opinions are both considered and different to mine.
They are the most challenging for me, and therefore the most interesting, because they push me to question my own views.
__________
blurp — Our respective positions on Mr Doodle clearly differ:
He does come across as a likeable chap, albeit a slightly irritating one. Plus, he is very astute when it comes to self‑marketing.
But in terms of artistic value or art‑historical significance, I've long been dismissive of the actual work he produces. At best, I would describe it as child‑friendly. Or as currently having a derivative, mass‑market appeal.
That said, I do try to avoid being overly rigid. Since new evidence will sometimes present itself unexpectedly, it's important to remain open to the possibility of pleasant surprises.
And on this particular occasion, I must admit being pleasantly surprised:
The composition of the art is strong. There is a feeling of coherence to the piece. Also, at least for once, the subject matter is intriguingly ambiguous — susceptible to a variety of different interpretations by the viewer, rather than simply being obvious and/or inane.
__________
Cheers to Onket for posting an image.
This curveball is most welcome.
It's forcing me to reassess my stance on part of Mr Doodle's body of work — even if, for the time being, that part is limited to a single artwork.

Cheers for this.
Seems a bit crazy, when you think about it.
That album (along with its cover art) was released just over four decades ago — meaning Mr Doodle must now be in his mid- or late 50s, at the very youngest.
But I've actually seen the artist painting in the streets of London. And in person, he genuinely looks like he's only in his late 20s or early 30s.
What's his secret? The guy couldn't be a friggin' vampire, could he?
Shame I only appreciate his old stuff, though. He had so much promise when he was young.
I suppose many of us do become insipid in our output with age.
As the spirit wanes, the form appears.
__________
In case any collector here is willing to sell one of their Mr Doodle artworks from the 1980s, please reach out and let's discuss.

Your best 2023 buy!!, by cemltz on Jan 3, 2024 13:46:07 GMT 1, I received the white one today to go with my black that I’ve had tucked away for 15+ years. If not too much of a bother, do you have a picture of the back of these stickers? I've been on the hunt, but everything I find is different in terms of cutting and backing. I know vintage POW was not known for their consistency, but wondering if there are views on "real" vs. "fake" on these specific stickers...

As far as I know, the Intercoat backing are the earlier versions. The ones where the sticker is cut out with the curved corners should have the Intercoat backing to be genuine.
The ones that some others have where you can see the backing are not fakes, but just later versions and the back is plain.
For prices, they seem to be listed anywhere between £25 to £150.
