Sourcing inspiration from popular culture and ancient art forms, Mitsuuchi evokes characters from Japanese folklore and European fairy tales, as seen via his depiction of knights, princesses, dragons,
and cats, whom he employs as avatars of his own experiences and emotions. His interests, however, should not be mistaken for nostalgia, but rather outcomes of Western and Japanese cartoons, modern manga, advertising, skateboarding, street culture, and traditional folk music infleunces, as well as inspirations from artists like Paul Klee and George Condo.
12th-century Chōjū-Giga (‘Animal Caricature’) scrolls consisting of satirical illustrations of frolicking rabbits, monkeys, and frogs dressed as monks have also informed Mitsuuchi’s attraction to unfinished, timeworn, and comical decorative objects. Likewise, many of his figures perch upon clouds, inspired by 11th-century Buddhist sculptures of cloud-borne celestials known as the Unchūkuyō Bosatsu (‘Bodhisattvas on Clouds’). Ultimately, Mitsuuchi seeks to “stimulate the viewer’s memory and imagination,” drawing together common elements between all cultures, bridging the gap with a universal language.

How did the show at Ross Kramer go? Did they all sell out/easy to get? I know the market is down overall currently, but does Noritoshi have a future for some ROI? I bought a huge one a while back. Wondering if I should hold or ditch it…

Will Noritoshi ever go to a proper gallery and ditch the whole “artist agent” approach? All the City of Talents x (Insert Gallery name here) model I have found doesn’t work. The whole Roger Gastman/Dabs Myla thing… Any inside knowledge is appreciated.
