New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by todd on Apr 11, 2008 13:27:48 GMT 1, these might be THE obey prints for the collection simply for the fact that this is probably the first time i've heard such discontent from all of these obey fanatics.
i'm a little curous about the 3d effect too. 3d normally brings smiles to peoples faces, so that's cool for my home.

That's his thing, and what makes him so interesting. Obviously they're going to be a bit hit and miss, but it's all a matter of personal taste. I prefer the political pieces !

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 12, 2008 6:25:22 GMT 1, I'm not an Obey fan by any stretch of the imagination. I find his art pretty mundane and pedestrian in the main and don't get why the worship really. I gather he's been around a long time and produced a huge amount of work over the years, but most of what I see, in particulay every release of his in the last 3 months is incredibly bland imho. I quite like a few of his pieces like the images of the pretty arabic women though I guess.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by pezlow on Apr 12, 2008 17:16:55 GMT 1, Shep's screenprints are certainly mass produced. But they are priced accordingly - rarely more than $50 from source, more often than not $25-$35. Shipping can often be more than the print.
So shep's prints cost the same as posters really, except they are well produced screenprints and signed. If you don't like the image then don't buy but it is hardly worth complaining about at that price.
Shep's prints should not be confused with his HPM - hand painted multiples and canvasses which are his real art and are really great to behold - loads of collaged effects and a huge amount of skill involved in their creation. Not all of the images will be to everyone's taste but that's life.
Shep is also a legendary street artist who has bombed more cities with more paste ups than probably all other street artists combined. His street work is prodigious and very very striking.
If you want a good read buy "Supply and Demand" by Shep and read about a true street art legend.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by slowmo on Apr 12, 2008 20:53:41 GMT 1, I'm with Pez, he tries to please all the people, his original works are pretty much stand alone in the flesh against an awful lot of other artists. Trouble is every time I see them for sale, they're already sold!
Shep is a real talent in my eyes and affordable screens of which you might want to buy 1 or 2 a year and not pay Β£300 a pop for is all good.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by bobbymeachamjr on Apr 13, 2008 1:40:24 GMT 1, Shepard Fairey is what he is - a mainstream producer of nice simple graphics. Commercial in every sense. That said, I think complaints should go elsewhere. Take for example Dface Street Improvement 3 - $450usd for creatively what amounts to an obey giant release on a bad week.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by leumasdarnley on Apr 13, 2008 13:04:39 GMT 1, Well as Pez brought up priced accordingly... what do you want for $35.00 I think he is doing a lot of good and introducing a lot of younger people to art because of his price point. But saying that you get what you pay for its not the most enlightening work... But saying that he does just fine for himself at the moment when you figure he sells about 400ish prints a week from the new releases plus a good amount of other items on the site I would assume. Say what you want but the kid is a genius.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by robotoil on Apr 13, 2008 13:33:56 GMT 1, I started collecting Shepard Fairey back in 2001. I collected a lot up until 2005 and then have refocused back to the early days. 1997-1999. The early stuff is a world away from what Shepard does now. Back then he didn't do fine art, it was just the screen prints. Back then it was 33 prints a year instead of 52+. A lot more time went into the screen prints. I totally understand what people are saying about the current prints. However, the fine art that is coming out right now is second to none.
For anyone that hasn't really seen what the early prints look like in person, please check out my collection. The early stuff is all 'Absurdest Propaganda'.

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by mcnuts on Apr 13, 2008 13:34:08 GMT 1, have to agree with pez and disagree with bobby on this one. The screen prints are great as they are cheap but can be hit and miss. He produces a hell of a lot of them. I'd much rather save up and for out for a hpm if they can be tracked down at a reasonable price. While there seems to be a large flipability of shep's prints, it doesnt seem to be true for the hpms. Rarely see them on ebay and have seen very few at secondary galleries at least in the UK, unless i am looking in the wrong place which bodes well for keeping those relatively affordable.

sure i agree there are a ton of crap weekly pictures and, to be honest, i 've stopped jumping into the weekly fray but his "fine art" stuff is fantastic

New Obey Prints up at ToyRoomGallery, by Dead Elvis on Apr 13, 2008 22:52:43 GMT 1, Why is this even being discussed? Supply and Demand is the Moby Dick of street art. To paraphrase Shep from his Henry Rollins interview, some artist work at a shitty restaurant to make ends meet. Instead, he started a graphic design company. Paul Insect did the same thing. You do what you do to make ends meet, then pull from your experiences to make a piece of art. Sure, you get 30+ sub-par prints a year, but at least you get 3 or 4 killer prints from that run. By my numbers, that's the same, if not more, than you get from Banksy, D Face, etc etc etc [in the midst of life we are in debt] etc.
