Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by Sacked... on Apr 10, 2009 20:10:24 GMT 1, Just spotted this :
Phillips de Pury Closed in Cologne Published: April 9, 2009 Send a letter to the Editor Save to Del.icio.us Digg this COLOGNE, Germany—Phillips de Pury has quietly closed its branch in Cologne and laid off the three employees working there under director Gérard Goodrow, Artforum reports via the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The branch was opened just a year ago. Lacking a sales room, it was intended mostly for previews of material to be sold in New York and to pursue new business. “There may be a lot happening in Berlin,” Goodrow told Art+Auction last year, “but the Rhine is where the money, the collectors, and the galleries are.”
The Süddeutsche writes that things haven't looked good for Phillips since October, when the Russian luxury-goods importer Mercury Group bought up more than 50 percent of the company's shares in what was supposed to be a "strategic partnership" that could lead to auctions being held in Moscow. In the months since, Mercury Group has seen its sales decline along with the health of the global economy, but according to the Süddeutsche, rumors that the company is close to bankruptcy have not been confirmed, and the company has declined to comment on whether more closures and layoffs are expected.

They have a long list of auctions booked!. Anyhow, any company with Malcolm Mclaren on its Advisory Board couldnt possibly be in trouble! hes just too damn stylish .

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by wiz on Apr 10, 2009 20:48:05 GMT 1, Always been like that with auctions Simococo, seller pay a sellers fee plus insurance and extra for any photos in catalogues etc. the sellers fee is negotiable, buyers pay hammer plus commission and any VAT applicable, auction house gets paid from both ends.

I think you're right :
"when buyers commissions were introduced in the 80s, trade publications called them a a charge for performing no service whatsoever "
- taking from the $12 million stuffed shark - Don Thompson
which i s quite a good read (dont tell me the ending though!)

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by wiz on Apr 12, 2009 0:34:22 GMT 1, I was paying a buyers commission before this in UK, only ever been to one sale without a buyers commission ie. hammer is what you pay, but it was a small sale at a local village hall.
edit:. They probably saw me coming and i was the only one paying hahaha, also i have just twigged the 80s was almost 30 years ago now! seems just a few years to me but possibly more than a lifetime ago for most on here, time is a bugger.

Wiz - I met my wife at a village auction in the 80's and you will not believe the buyers premium I have paid (and still paying) on her, much more than 25%. She got her mobile stolen the other month.....I didn't report it as the thief is spending much less on it than she was.
She's not that bad really, although she has had admitted that I have started to do odd little things that annoy her...........like waking up each morning!
