Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Chris JL on Aug 6, 2021 20:09:40 GMT 1, One of the biggest reasons I'm suspicious of the long-term success of NFTs is their impact, or at least perceived impact, on the environment. Over the next decade it's really hard to imagine the majority of people embracing something that has a needlessly huge carbon footprint. It just seems to out of step with where the world is going. What's your thermostat set at? Enjoy your AC? Eat any meat lately? Grow your own food? Enjoy hot water? Do you bike everywhere?

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Deleted on Aug 6, 2021 20:57:07 GMT 1, The spot paintings are a feat of marketing too. That's what Hirst does, very cleverly. There are at least 1,500 of the spot paintings. Can you explain why one series is great and another a gimmick? [br There arenโt 1500 A4 sheets of the same release marketed under the NFT banner. Heโs clever and weโre gullible. Heโs openly paining the huge sheets and they will be sliced and diced to size for this. Iโve nothing against him, I own a woodcut and itโs fascinating when it really shouldnโt be.
Itโs an odd argument to make that process matters in the creation of Hirst art. We all know assistants do it all and he just signs them, so what really is the difference if theyโre made messily and cut down from large sheets or made neatly? Itโs all conveyor belt art. Is one better simply because itโs priced higher?
Hirst is a genius of marketing, and this project is one of his smartest ideas, but letโs not pretend most of his works are individually meaningful.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by whatsthestory on Aug 7, 2021 13:02:04 GMT 1, The bit missing in the energy discussion so far in my opinion is that these use energy rather than actually burning fuel.
Firstly, of course most energy is still derived from burning fossil fuels, I completely accept that.
My point is simply that if countries transition to renewables for its energy source then the whole "bitcoin / NFTs are bad for the planet" becomes irrelevant.
So in a future of increased renewable energy focus I'm not sure this will be the same issue people expect it to be.

Dropping in ETH terms but not USD terms it seems? Because ETH is appreciating. For someone who doesnโt hold crypto and would need to source sun just to make the purchase, it doesnโt seem to have got much cheaper.

No Eip 1559 is a change in the way fees are distributed to miners, and how much. There has been a reduction of around 15-20 percent in mining profits since it was implemented, this is due to them burning any additional fees placed on a block. Before the hard fork there was a base fee of around 2eth per block plus 5-10 eth depending on how busy the network was, now that additional 5-10 eth gets burnt.
The switch from proof of work to stake will be implemented around december if all is going well.

I bought 1 eth at aprx 2K (same as the hirst piece). the eth is now worth 3K, and the hirst is worth a min of 7K. even though im up 50% in the ETH, Im still sad. go figure. first world problems right?

Which someone who is concerned likely would be already.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Deleted on Aug 8, 2021 15:23:39 GMT 1, Funny reading the Discord for this a week in. Some people angry that their investment isn't rocketing in price, that Hirst isn't doing enough to hype it, and insisting that NFT holders deserve some sort of extra reward. Four times return on original investment apparently not big enough reward for doing absolutely nothing.
Interesting seeing the difference in expectation between worlds. Those used to NFT releases expect to have regular communication from Hirst, to build 'community' and help make the NFTs desirable. Don't think anyone used to buying art the usual way would expect any involvement from Hirst once you've paid your money.

Completely agree. Could I also add that whoever was recommending UAA to the fuckin crypto kids as a good place to find info on art flips, please just stop. That's the last thing this place needs๐

It doesn't seem like flipping physical art would interest them or bring worthwhile returns.
When this launched, I was interested to find out more about the NFT world. So far, I've seen nothing about it that's appealing. There seems zero desire to actually keep anything, only to see it increase in value and then move it on. Everyone here may have an interest in their collection increasing in value, but at least most people also actually have artists they love and want to keep forever.

I just can't get my head round it? Is it just art for people that prefer money? Each to their own and all that, I'm not taking the piss I'm genuinely interested.

I just can't get my head round it? Is it just art for people that prefer money? Each to their own and all that, I'm not taking the piss I'm genuinely interested. What I've been asking all along. Maybe to some it's art, but to the majority of NFT owners, it just looks like a stock or crypto coin with a cap based on how many are avail now and what will be left.
'For The Love of God', I'd rather stare at a tiger shark suspended in formaldihyde and consider 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living' or even watch flies die and crawl over a rotting cows head in 'A Thousand Years' or witness 'Verity's massive baby bump and I'd definitely prefer to see the 'Cherry Blossoms' in Paris than buy into NFT. Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Deleted on Aug 8, 2021 16:22:34 GMT 1, 'For The Love of God', I'd rather stare at a tiger shark suspended in formaldihyde and consider 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living' or even watch flies die and crawl over a rotting cows head in 'A Thousand Years' or witness 'Verity's massive baby bump and I'd definitely prefer to see the 'Cherry Blossoms' in Paris than buy into NFT. My understanding, which is a long way from expert, is that it's not really about art at all. It's about value and/or rarity. You want something because nobody else has it or because it will rise in value. There's no interest in it as art. It's collectables, not artwork.
Obviously a lot of things we call art on here are also just collectibles, but in NFTs it's all collectables. And there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not really in any way an art form.

Are they actually going to burn/destroy physical art? I haven't been on here for a while it all got a bit fake art and NFT for me.
