Sam Durant 🇺🇸 Multimedia Artist • End White Supremacy , by roseberysauctions on Jan 29, 2019 7:43:22 GMT 1,
This January, Roseberys have the pleasure to auction off a work of art by renowned American artist Sam Durant in our online New Collectors auction. This will be the first time Roseberys has offered work by the multimedia artist. The auction that is currently live will run until Thursday 31 January, ending at 12 noon.
Lot. 1 "L'homme Fait L'Amour", made in 2008; is spray enamel on mirror mounted on plywood, signed and dated in black marker on the reverse, 118 x 217cm (unframed). "L'homme Fait L'Amour" is estimated to sell for £8,000 - £12,000, starting at £5000.
This is not the first work of art that Durant has produced with spray enamel on mirror, plywood. A similar piece titled "Soyons Cruel", 2008 sold for £ 9,375 including buyers premium, in December, 2013 at Phillips sale in London . Durant produced a series of similar works on mirror in a project he named mirror travels in neoliberalism. He also worked with spray paint in his project named la culture est linversion de la vie. Tess O’Brien the specialist for the sale noted that Sam Durant’s mirror works are evocative of both reflection and reflexion. ‘A mirror suggests the creation of a perspective leading to an infinite number of interpretations. The viewer finds himself involved in the work, both through the reflected image and his own reflexion process.’ She went on to further comment about the work of art on offer. ‘This is a striking piece by Sam Durant, the interactive nature of the work created by the mirror keeps the ontology of the work continuously evolving. With a starting price of £5000, this is a wonderful opportunity for a new collector to own a piece by a prominent Contemporary artist ’
Here we shine a spotlight on the artist Sam Durant, who created the special lot, "L'homme Fait L'Amour", within the New Collectors sale.

His works of art usually touch upon in a wide variety of social, political, and cultural issues, often referencing American history. His work explores the dynamic relationships between culture and politics, engaging subjects as varied as the civil rights movement to southern rock music, and through to modernism. His work has been exhibited around the world and in his home country of the United States. These include his solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Dusseldorf, S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand. His work has also been included in the Panamá, Sydney, Venice and Whitney Biennales. Durant shows with a number of galleries including Blum and Poe in Los Angeles, Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, Praz-Delae in Paris and Sadie Coles Gallery in London. Sam Durant 🇺🇸 Multimedia Artist • End White Supremacy , by mose on Jan 19, 2021 22:41:37 GMT 1, I think this was a nice score. Money to charity, hand-sprayed, wall-friendly size, established artist with excellent gallery representation and works in MoMA, Tate, etc. Durant's practice is definitely 'of the time' but he isn't a Johnny-come-lately. This work is consistent with what he has done, and themes he has explored, for a long time.
First saw his work at Paula Cooper back in like 2008-2009. Couldn't miss it, big sign outside of the gallery above the entrance.

I think you need to check. It says "printed in various colours". They look too identical to be hand sprayed. I once bought 2 Stanley donwood designed records that were advertised as hand signed. When I got them, I could see they were identical, so I messaged mr d and he said the original was signed but all the record sleeves were prints of his signature I could be wrong in this case of course. Just what it looks like to me.

That’s strange. Everything I’ve ever gotten from donwood that is advertised as signed is hand signed and hand numbered. That includes books, records and prints.

It wasn't directly sold by Donwood it was "the joy of living" when it was first released, the company selling it thought they were all hand signed. They eventually changed their sales pitch once Stanley let them know though.

Yeah I have that too. I bought it directly from Donwood’s site and it was advertised as being signed. It’s also numbered. Oh well, I bought it for the album art anyway. Just seems bizarre to hand number it and then have a fake signature printed on.
