Shepard Fairey, Glen E. Friedman Tony Alva Artcurial, by artiseverywhere on Dec 16, 2020 2:00:04 GMT 1, The Shepard Fairey and Glen E. Friedman Tony Alva piece in the Artcurial auction on the 16th of December is fantastic. I downloaded the catalogue from the Artcurial site and it has a story about the piece from Shepard Fairey’s book Obey, Supply and Demand where the piece is featured.
Shepard Fairey writes:
Both Tony Alva and Glen E. Friedman, who took this photo of Alva in 1977, were both cultural figures for me growing up, so it was a great honour for me to collaborate with them on this piece. Alva is a really important icon in skateboarding history, being the first to do an air out of a pool, having a very punk-rock attitude and then becoming one of the first skaters to form his own company. My second skateboard ever, back in 1984, was an Alva model. Glen was a primary photographer of the early pool skating scene, and he shot some of my favourite punk and hip-hop acts. From Black Flag and the Misfits to the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy.
