In the early 1980s, German artist Gerhard Richter painted 24 views of flickering white candles, and not a single one sold. When one of those "Candle" canvases came up at Christie's in London this past fall, it sold for $16.5 million.

Signed and numbered limited edition of Gerhard Richter's November. Published in an edition of 800.

Richter produced NOVEMBER, a series of 54 works in ink, in 2008. These works were created using a variety of ways to manipulate the consistency of ink and its flow on highly absorbent paper. The ink permeated through the sheets creating two related images, one on the front and one on the back of each of the 27 sheets used. In some cases Richter also applied lacquer or pencil.

Richter had a complete set of facsimiles made so both sides of the 27 sheets could be viewed at the same time. However, the sequence of mirrored pairs of images is disrupted, as some of the images have been rotated by 180 degrees. The book displays the images of the pairs, one on the front and one on the back of each page and ends with an overview of all 54 works.

Went to tatty modern Gerhard Richter exhibition, really impressive.  Wouldn't have been my first choice but a mate recommended it.

not exactly what your looking for i know! but i was comissioned to paint a number of large richter style canvas's for a corporate client last year.





i've two smaller test canvas in the studio, if your intersted in filling a gap in the wall until you can get enough $£$£$£$ together for your original!

Prints or originals? I don't think I can afford either but with a print I might have a chance. I've also lusted over Richter's work but assumed I'd never be able to get one. 

Not sure why but this is my favorite of his paintings. (sorry for the tangent)

this is a kerze 88 at ketterer. i doubt it will trade as low as the estimate - 9.9k GBP / 16.5k USD. The 88 kerze is the Marilyn of richter prints. edition of 250 and his kerze paintings are mammoth at auction, mostly given to close friends and family over the years. VG and Ketterer have been selling the limited edition Kerze '88 from 20-30k USD in '13

this piece at korff stifftung is very nice, and in the signature Richter squeegee-style - www.korff-stiftung.de/kunst-galerie/richter-gerhard/gerhard-richter-ibm-1987/ no clue how much. marian and mike are very nice to return enquiries

One thing i don't get about banksy is the relatively low spread between his auction record originals and the edition prices. I don't know what the top price for an edition might be, but maybe that's $60k USD(?), and his auction record is less than $2mil USD. that's about 33 x

One can buy an iconic Richter multiple for $20k USD, and his auction prices are upwards of $40mil. even double that print price is 1,000 x

Warhol auction record $100mil USD and print pink Mary at $250k USD - spread is 400 x
Licthy auction record $56mil USD and print $325k USD - spread is stil 170 x

the difference in the spread is perplexing, especially 33 and 1,000, exponentially higher. it would seem to indicate that either the prints are inflated or the originals are cheap. or maybe it's just not a meaningful metric

Thanks for the info. For sure the discrepancy in the multiples comes from the different market. People who collect Banksy prints are rich, People who collect Richter are Oprah rich. A whole other level of crazy disgusting wealth. Prints to them are like posters to Banksy fans.
