Kenny Scharf πΊπΈ Painting β’ New Print Release β’ For Sale, by dreadnatty on Oct 9, 2014 16:34:27 GMT 1, paceprints.com/2014/kenny-scharf
Pace Prints is pleased to announce Kenny Scharf, an exhibition of new three-dimensional works in paper by the renowned pop artist. The exhibition will be on view October 10βNovember 8. A public reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, October 9, 6-8pm.
Kenny Scharfβs signature cartoon-like faces are instantly recognizable. Each three-dimensional face exhibits vivid color and wild emotion. Scharf approaches his series of energetic relief works in a more βhands-onβ method than his highly-polished large scale sculptures. Physically modeling the positives for his molds, Scharf works with master papermakers who cast each face out of pigmented paper pulp. Each head is then hand painted. With a beaming Swarovski crystal-bedazzled smile and gleaming eyes, every Pace Face has its own personality.
Though Scharfβs brightly colored imagery is generally playful, serious themes exist beneath the surface, visible upon closer inspection. In his series of large unique works on paper, Scharf sourced 30 years of collected newspaper headlines and advertisements, creating a series of two-dimensional grounds with highly political content. Layering headline over headline, their individual connotations soften in multitude, markedly when paired with Scharfβs signature cartoon faces. This cocktail of manic Pace Face personas and collaged items highlights the artistβs surrealist ideals.
Kenny Scharf rose to prominence alongside his contemporaries Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring in the East Village art scene of the 1980s. One of the first artists to inject elements of street culture into mainstream contemporary art, Scharf has continued to pioneer projects like his Cosmic Cavernβ a now legendary all-night DayGlo disco party held in the basement of a Brooklyn warehouse from 2009-2010. Growing up in California in the 1960s, Scharf was fascinated by TV and the eraβs conception of the future. The Flintstones and The Jetsons highly influenced his work and figure prominently in his surrealistic pop style, dealing with earth and space, natural and artificial.
Kenny Scharf is in the public collections of the Brant Foundation, Greenwich, CT; Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Whitney Museum, New York, NY; Eli Broad Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; The Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, FL; The Jewish Museum, New York, NY, and the Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL, among others. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California and Brooklyn, New York.

Kenny Scharf πΊπΈ Painting β’ New Print Release β’ For Sale, by dreadnatty on Mar 9, 2015 18:13:18 GMT 1, A Look Inside Kenny Scharfβs βBorn Againβ Exhibition at Honor Fraser Gallery
www.highsnobiety.com/2015/03/09/kenny-scharf-born-again-exhibition-honor-fraser/
Kenny Scharf presents his latest show at Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles. Tracing the evolution of Scharfβs diverse artistic practice, βBorn Againβ features a selection of rarely shown early videos and collages. Also included is a salon-style installation of paintings from Scharfβs new Born Again series, in addition to never-before exhibited assemblage paintings. Though Scharf is best known for his exuberant iconography, his work also contains underlying themes that reflect his commitment to social and environmental concerns. For the artist, embracing fun is an act of defiance, and his constant use of unconventional materials, bright color palette and playful shapes acts as a protest against a restrictive cultural framework. The Born Again paintings reflect this notion by inserting his familiar characters and motifs into found amateur paintings.
Check out a recap of the exhibition above and make sure to drop by if you find yourself in the City of Angels.

Kenny Scharf πΊπΈ Painting β’ New Print Release β’ For Sale, by dreadnatty on Mar 19, 2016 2:25:50 GMT 1, Kenny Scharf Exhibition at Nassau County Museum
Opening on Saturday, March 19, 2016 and remaining on view through Sunday, July 10, 2016, Kenny Scharf is sponsored by TAHARI Arthur S. Levine.
Emerging with the New York City graffiti and street art movement of the 1980s, Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is known for his vibrantly colorful large-scale paintings and exuberantly playful installations. His imagery draws upon pop icons, media advertising and consumer culture of the 1960s, including TV cartoon characters such as the Flintstones and the Jetsons. Curated by Director Dr. Karl E. Willers and the Museum's staff, Kenny Scharf showcases major paintings and sculptures from throughout the artist's career. Highlights of this exhibition are the expansive mural Pop Renaissance that surrounds the viewer, a version of the artist's Cosmic Cavern club-like environment, as well as a recreation of the artist's former Brooklyn studio complete with spattered walls, painted furniture and other workspace ephemera.
In speaking about his art, Kenny Scharf commented: "I believe the artist has a social responsibility to engage others in a thought process that ultimately brings the creative process into everyday life thereby enhancing the quality of our experience." According to Art News, he inaugurated his iconic Cosmic Cavern installations when he turned his basement into one of the day-glo environments that have been his trademark since the 1980s. Versions of these Cosmic Cavern installations have been seen at the 1985 Whitney Biennial and at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City. Works by Scharf are also in the collections of such major New York institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Jewish Museum. Internationally, works by Scharf have been collected by Mexico's Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; and the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The Museum is offering programs that will serve to enhance the experience of viewing this exhibition of works by Kenny Scharf.
