Interesting to see the Miller do so well in the US... It was a pretty good result but a very soft guide, clearly priced to entice.

The big 3 are well known for that Yes they are very protective of their sell through rate and like to brag about how many lots sell well above high end of guide. In reality most savvy buyers and sellers see right through this but clearly some people are lapping it up or they wouldnโt keep doing it.

Our First Open auction which ran this season closed yesterday, with 90% sold by lot and a hammer of 134% of the low estimate, both excellent statistics.

I expect all the coming auctions to do well assuming they proceed that is.

There's a bit of an anomaly when it comes to auctions. They are necessarily anonymous for the seller (they originate from a time when an estate selling their wares was a mark of shame), however ownership does matter. A lot from an 'important' collection (say a musuem, or Saatchi) will command a premium over an identical lot without that 'brand'.
So this tips you the hat that the provenance is aok and the former owner is someone worth boasting about.
All a bit needless, but can be helpful for items where provenance is sometimes a question mark

Hi mate, if it comes from a well known collection it can add value so if there has been say a celebrity who has owned the piece the auction house will make a big song and dance of it.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by bottlenecknyc on Mar 11, 2020 14:32:10 GMT 1, Yea its really smart actually with the pricing. They probably had higher estimates prior to everything going on in the world and instead of canceling the sale, you go on the lower end so it beats those estimates and it looks good. Instead of taking the chance on the higher end and not matching or barely beating which could have more of a long term effect.

I have been in touch with them early January and those were the estimates they gave, so unrelated to the recent events but rather overall strategy with estimates they have, which are way low-ball, but deliver great result as they attract semi-interested buyers who may become more and more interested during the auction process.

Maybe they are just boosting the item, because it doesn't have any other provenanceโฆ.
Maybe Ben Eine's or Anthony Lister's collection is considered important.
And if it's from the Royal Family - will they tell you who it came from? Or is the only provenance when you ever want to sell it again that it came from "importance" ?

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by LJCal on Mar 11, 2020 21:47:51 GMT 1, I have been in touch with them early January and those were the estimates they gave, so unrelated to the recent events but rather overall strategy with estimates they have, which are way low-ball, but deliver great result as they attract semi-interested buyers who may become more and more interested during the auction process. ah ok well either way still smart strategy. As some said above, even has us thinking about possibly bidding. I wouldnโt waste your time unless your prepared to pay well over guide. Christieโs is the last place Iโd buy Banksy from, youre up against international collectors and galleries with very deep pockets.
