Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by iamzero on Aug 4, 2013 10:26:46 GMT 1, Personally I think Sundowner has nailed the reason perfectly. Galleries on here posing as members overpaying know once they have them they then control the prices and can make huge profits.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Aug 31, 2013 23:09:33 GMT 1, Is Banksy overhyped?
Is this a trick question??
Of course he is. Don't get me wrong I like his stuff but the way some people talk on here I swear they think he's more important than Van Gogh!
He's an artist whose street pieces are (usually) good - some are brilliant, others less so. His prints are ok and his prices are totally off the scale.
If you look at one of his prints, say, CYW. Many other urban artists bring out prints with a very similar image or idea. It's not especially clever or insightful, it looks nice but then so do many other prints. If that had been brought out by Nick Walker or SPQR it would've been a very different story and wouldn't be changing hands for mega bucks like it is now.
Read any thread on Banksy prints (not in the For Sale section) and see how long it is before money and profit is mentioned. This is the real reason people want to keep hyping him up.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by alexdb on Aug 31, 2013 23:31:27 GMT 1, Banksy is a master of marketing. Along wiith people like Jeff Koons and Hirst marketing and the way he gets attention and media coverage is one of the most interesting things about the phenomenon Banksy.
Similar like Warhol. So can we say that it is basically an old trick and we, as the audience got fooled again? Just to start up a discussion guys, not to be negative about Banksy!

Oh my god, you actually just said that didn't you. Yes they're totally different artists from totally different times but you have to understand that Banksy isn't even in the same league. Tell me please, what's the going rate for a Van Gogh unsigned screen print out of an edition of 500 then?
I'm sure if Mr Gunningham is at home reading this he'd be p****ing himself laughing at your reply.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Sept 1, 2013 0:05:57 GMT 1, Observations:
- this is or at least was the banksy forum spawned from the eBay banksy forum. If you're going to find people discussing/praising/seeing others come up short its here.
- this thread started in 2006 just as the prices started to move, there was plenty happening, the banksy machine was very much a different beast.
- as an aside, cyw is for those who look actually a fairly meaningful print, there are threads here discussing, its just really about the individual choosing to learn what they want (like the print in many ways).
- late adopters will obviously feel angst at missing opportunities to buy and that is understandable.
- there are many here possibly involuntarily 'protecting' their investments.
- this forum is a minuscule part of the art community, banksy but one artist, here is skewed... When ppl say he's hyped it's a message being relayed to a small number how valid this hyping is in a broader context is questionable.
- hyping would also suggest a manipulation of something that does not deserve credit - that would require observation and comment on all artists discussed here and their relative worth monetarily and re: societal impact

Hmmm interesting idea. I've only seen hype being positive hype on here so I wouldn't know but I guess it could work that way.
I suppose negative publicity is what will effectively kill an artist's career, you just need to read the Rolf Harris thread to see that!

PEGGY NO SYCOPHANT BUT CAN SEE A FAR GREATER IMPACT BY SPRAY CAN VANDAL BANKSY IN HIS LIFETIME THAN ONE EAR HAD IN HIS LIFETIME. MAYBE IN TIME IT WILL FADE. EITHER WAY THE COST OF A PRINT IS NO MEASURE OF AN ARTIST.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by graffuturism on Sept 1, 2013 14:20:40 GMT 1, I dont think banksy is overhyped, but I also dont think we know what Banksy will equate to in the decades to come. Banksy is no Van Gogh not that he wont be remembered but they are very different and historically there will only ever be one Van gogh. Their might only be one Banksy as well but being that he is celebrated in his lifetime has stunted his growth I believe. Banksy is his own worst enemy in the sense that he has created a status where people expect him to be more than maybe he wants to be. That plus it has been deemed ok to copy his style thus dilluting his potency over the last couple of years. There are many artists that think like Banksy paint like banksy, created a whole new identity of work based on one of his ideas or series of works. He has spawned alot of copycat artists, and I am not saying that in a derogatory way just it is a fact. This might be one of the reasons for his leave of absence as of late. What is he going to do next paint something someone else already stole. The question is not when he will come back or what print release he does next it will be what does he do next. Normal working artists work even at the top of their success. How is he able to work in the same manner as say a Lucien freud, or bacon who continued to get better as they aged. Their work becoming more Powerful. Maybe like Marcel Duchamp he has quit painting to play chess or some other hobby. In the end If I were to guess Banksy will come back. If he does and it is similar in style and along the line of his overall body of work then I we might have already seen the best days of Banksy. If he does something completely unexpected in concept and style and 90% of you guys hate it then he might have a chance to be something more historical than he already is. I am not a banksy expert but he never hit me as a conformist or seemed predictable so I doubt he will keep the status quo most of you guys are hoping for. I hope not atleast.

Ad hominem
An ad hominem argument is any that attempts to counter another’s claims or conclusions by attacking the person, rather than addressing the argument itself.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by dazarino on Sept 11, 2013 9:09:35 GMT 1, Mr gunningham is extremely overhyped in this forum anyway, he is no where near as famous as Van Gogh, in fact in reality I would still say banksy is fairly unknown worldwide in comparison, I still know many people who have not even heard of him in the uk, sad I know and it does annoy me but true. We will never know how important he will become in the art world, as it will be after our lifetime if he will ever get hailed as one of the greats or known as just another graffiti artist.

Very true. Some people assume that everyone has heard of Banksy but I work with people who have never heard of him - and that's in London!

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Happy Shopper on Sept 11, 2013 11:59:04 GMT 1, If you look at one of his prints, say, CYW. Many other urban artists bring out prints with a very similar image or idea. It's not especially clever or insightful, it looks nice but then so do many other prints. If that had been brought out by Nick Walker or SPQR it would've been a very different story and wouldn't be changing hands for mega bucks like it is now. What I feel you're missing there is the career aspect, rather than the individual print merit. Because of Banky's history with the scene people want to own ANYTHING he does, because he's that important to them/the scene/possible art history. You just don't get that with the artists that came after (and even if they came slightly before!)

What I feel you're missing there is the career aspect, rather than the individual print merit. Because of Banky's history with the scene people want to own ANYTHING he does, because he's that important to them/the scene/possible art history. You just don't get that with the artists that came after (and even if they came slightly before!)

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by bonsai on Nov 21, 2013 5:51:32 GMT 1, Someone needs to tell the "Flippers" Banksy only just finished a show, and he is not actually dead.
PPl asking prices double and beyond for prints they clearly dont even own and I guess have been offered to them VIA wanted threads. Happy to work with you if you are re selling, but you might want to do some home work first.
Un signed Barcodes are not 5000 pounds ...

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by mac on Nov 21, 2013 6:37:31 GMT 1, Agree with most of the above, just this year the prices of prints (mainly signed) have rocketed from a year ago. I should expect this has a lot to do with the galleries buying up / controlling the pricing as has already been said. Seems even on here prints are bought and flipped a couple of months later rather than finding a nice place on someone's wall - maybe this is why fewer and fewer photos are accompanying FS posts?
Saying that, I do hope the bubble does burst and I can actually afford to buy one (agree with Bonsai on Barcode, a personal favourite and more and more a pipe dream for me), every time I think I saved enough I find they have gone up again! Patience...

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Nov 21, 2013 7:51:29 GMT 1, Yeah galleries and collectors seem to be hoovering all the signed up, everyone can see banksy as great long term investment. In economics 'they say' every bubble bursts?? Some don't (ie. Sydney house prices), I think banksy won't either there may be the odd correction now and again and will drop a few % but nothing huge. Be interesting to see a chart showing warhol prices through the 70's/80's to now and see what percentage they went up and when were the corrections...

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Apr 23, 2014 23:20:55 GMT 1, Okay we all read on here prices are on the up etc..
I haven't looked on Ebay for over 6 months for Banksy prints as I cant afford any. Just looked this morning and yeah I am shocked at the prices.
Are we in a Banksy bubble? is it just 'supply and demand' that keeps prices increasing as he hasn't released in a while? Is it purely that Galleries maybe buying up everything pushing up prices? Another factor is people/galleries try hyping other artists (for investment with lots or people here getting sucked in) none of these have the investment staying power of Banksy and people have realised this so just invest in Banksy? Are hedge funds investing in Banksy instead of shares? Will there be a crash?
There is a signed happy chopper on there at the moment to buy at 7900 pounds which seems a bargain compared to the rest. A 'Sales End' on there also (lovely print) I wonder what price it will end at?
For the old members here has there ever been a big crash? thoughts etc..?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by johnnyh on Apr 24, 2014 3:25:41 GMT 1, There are a lot of for a want of a better word Banksy marketeers. Buying and flipping Banksy's just trading them basically.
Plenty of them around here in the looking for Banksy cash waiting adverts.
Galleries are buying and selling but that's what they do
Would not say it's a bubble more a trend as his name becomes bigger and prints harder to find. So think it will maintain and prices will steadily continue to increase. Must say I own a few but no interest in selling and due to daft prices no real interest in buying more.
There are better pieces available for the cash from other artists. Which is a shame as there are one or two others I would like in my collection. Although the other pieces will not rise at the same daft rates they do look better on walls
