This secondary market , It all helps in a way , free advertising , getting people discussing about banksy and the charity.
Some people will investigate further into the charitable cause.
If there was not this secondary market many would not be here now , half the general public would not care or attend the latest GDP exhibit
These sales Will draw more people to the second round of sales to the mat as more certain to purchase than other exhibits and a few of the general public not usually interested in these types of art will be tempted by profits , the sin 🤐But all helps and goes to a meaningful cause.
Even all prices may rise in the second round of releases so this initial secondary market helps justify certain buyers spending the amount , making an ease that they can recoup or profit if they choose to?
Not everyone has the disposable incomes of many here , £500 to some people may be a vast amount of their monthly income
They say all press is good press , a lot of information is slowly being shared about the charity , a lot of finer detail than would be had through a normal release, even talk about labels and construction of the mats🙄
This is a forum dedicated to the extreme collectors of banksy , so a lot of odd comments to be expected , makes for an amusing read at times ,common sense and reasonable thought out of the window at times 🤕
It is unlimited so no one is missing out
the guys selling had the sole purpose of selling from the start and if not this secondary market they would not have purchased in the first place , i.e. Less sales towards the charity and the people buying secondary obviously not aware of the GDP site hence GDP direct sales would not be met so everyone's a winner at the moment?

lets talk statistics

each mat costs £500

thus in my line of work - I would say that each mat takes 2 days to complete

500 in first order - thus lets say they had 100 prepared in advance

thus 400 to complete - or 800 man /women days of work.
with 15 people working you would need say nearly 3 months to complete the 400 balance.

if say 2000 people world wide signed up that 4000 man / women days

average month 21.63 days per person - you could be waiting over a year to receive one if you have signed up for the mailing list

There’s so much hypocrisy on this forum. I’d bet most people who missed out want to get one so they can flip it. Looking back over the years this happens time and time again. I would say the majority of people use this forum for personal financial gain and the calling out of flippers is nothing but jealousy.
The great thing about art (assuming you’re even into art) is there’s always something new around the corner.

I expect they will just hire more people to make them and hence the wait time will be less. Great cause, just add yourself to the waitlist and you'll get one at £500 eventually and help the charity.

It needs to be remembered that the organisation already have their own product lines and are successfully building an identity. For sustainability and development purposes they can't take manufacturing resources etc. away from producing their own product for too long. They can't rely solely on an injection line if they want to continue what they're doing. Whilst the Banksy mat is a wonderful collaboration for them I would suspect both parties are hoping it becomes a catalyst.

none of these items will be “unlimited”, not the cans, not the mugs, not the mats. they won’t get any edition size, but in some way all of these items will be produced to a certain limit.

Possibly but why not announce that earlier and why were lovewelcomes not aware of that themselves. It seems strange he would have that in mind but allow love welcomes to advertise these as available elsewhere instead of directing traffic to their own site. Also he could easily of passed over rights to sell to loves after the original release.

I imagine he wanted it clear that these are part of the Gross Domestic Product "show", so they're listed on his site as one of the items to choose. (Except, you only got to find out you could buy direct if you clicked on the link... thus limiting the bombardment of their website)

Buying direct from Lovewelcomes also probably makes the charity donation easier, with no reason for Pest Control or whoever else to be involved.

As a side note, it’s nice to see that some other items on the Love Welcomes site are showing as sold out, so the publicity of the Banksy piece is helping the charity’s sales more broadly.

I would of thought the bombardment of their website to be a good thing. Also it really wouldn’t of been difficult to make a donation to loves for all the profits. It’s probably nothing but something changed their minds. Also did anyone for the USA purchase one of these it would be interesting to see what the delivery charge was?

There's a good reason they don't release Banksy editions like that anymore. Websites crashing from too much traffic, oversells, and the headache of hundreds of refunds.

As long as they sell the 500 (or whatever) they had. Job done.
