Banksy Rat Clock, Gross Domestic Product™, by wsm on Dec 23, 2020 0:34:45 GMT 1, The glass is not protective tho, encapsulation is good way to protect and keep safe?
Not sure I would have framed a clock, the image is behind glass/perspex already, nice pick up though, This is the item I went for.

I framed it based off the advice given to me from a note with the clock.. they recommended using a Perspex that offers UV protection. Since I didn’t want to replace the glass on the clock itself to keep it 100% original, framing it in the Perspex was my only option ☺️

I think it looks brilliant, leaving the back accessible was a great touch too. Lovely job, fire up a picture once it’s pride of place at home.

Banksy Rat Clock, Gross Domestic Product™, by mgrizz on Dec 23, 2020 23:46:26 GMT 1, he wanted to keep it in its original state. Which is exactly what simply changing the stock Huygens glass for UV protective glass would do.
Banksy's singular input to the piece is the clock face, which is the only part that requires conservation.
What part of that are you finding it so challenging to comprehend?
I believe you’re struggling to comprehend that I want to keep the clock (in its entirety - body, face, arms, back) original.
Changing any component would then make it non-original. Simple.

Agreed. The clock is the piece of art, not just the clock face. It should be preserved in the condition it left the studio.
Anywho, if you replace the stock glass you could be replacing a piece of the clock that Banksy touched, sneezed on or otherwise breathed upon. Could you live with that? Think about the lost DNA for a moment...

So, would you use the cushions as cushions? Risk having it end up covered in stains and pet hair?
The clock is no longer a clock, it's an incredibly value piece of art. Protecting it in this way is the responsible thing to do. Remember, we are all merely custodians of the art we own. Some are good custodians, others not so.

Or the t-shirt as an actual t-shirt. I don't think krsone thought it through before posting.
Anyway, great job with the framing. Would you mind sharing where you got it framed? PM if you don't want to post on the thread. Cheers.

Is a Bugatti Type 57 just a car...? Would you keep it parked on the street when you could afford to put it in a heated garage? Maybe you would but you absolutely should not.
Merry Christmas.

Except nobody wipes their feet on a clock (welcome mat) or sits on a clock (cushions) or wears a clock (t-shirt).
It's quite literally a ready to hang, ready framed artwork.
Still, each to their own and all that shit...
Flys still land and sh1t on clocks, don't they? Clocks are still affected by condensation, steam, smoke and dust aren't they? An ball accidentally thrown at a clock could crack the glass, couldn't it?
It's like the flipping twilight zone on here sometimes. The guy's taking good care of a valuable item. It's the responsible thing to do. Why would anyone be even remotely critical of that approach?

If you are fortunate to get one from what I have seen the instructions are to replace the existing glass with Museum or UV Glass effectively creating a frame for the artwork which essentially is the rat.
Personally I don’t like the framing job, makes it look a bit untidy.

Thanks to those who compliment the framing! I’m very happy with it..
While the note from GDP does recommend replacing the glass and not framing the entire clock, I struggled to find a framer who could and would replace the clock face with UV/museum grade glass. At the same time I felt much more comfortable with not opening up the clock to change it from its original form. One wrong move or one scratch and forever regret my decision!
Dimensions of the frame box are roughly 600mm x 600mm (I’m not with it at the moment to measure)
