I remain a massive Baldwin fan, love his work, there's something different yet knowing about it, really appeals to me. Lister is not my cup of tea, but think that he too is a good artist. So in terms of the question, because they cannot flip nicely on ebay, yes Lister is the new Baldwin.

Someone posted a very good measure for success on here once. its the 200 rule. If you have 200 devoted fans who will buy anything you produce, you can then live off of the proceeds to concentrate on your art, those 200 will influence others and you will achieve more success. Drop below and its back to the day job before too long

1st time I have heard that, it makes sense. 200 prints @ £250 each x 4 releases a year @ 50% return = £100k plus a few originals and a Nike sneaker deal, plus commissions and a dirty funker LP! Result! ;D

I read that 200 rule too and it did make good sense, also taking into account that there will be many other "fans" buying ocassionally, but if the core die-harders remain loyal and you look after them properly, then a good living will always be there for the making. I liked that article too.

If you can't see why the work of Lister is important you need to reasses what is "Good" art.
And stop hating on someone who's accomplished more as an artist then you ever will typing on your computer.

Large moving pieces. A Unique Consistant style that fills a large gallery spaces with new ideas. = Excellent Art.

Infact its these type of artists that have longevity and not overhyped fly by night characters that maybe extremely popular short term.

Um, let's see. You could have 2 originals in a mirror series by Lister, an artist who knows how to use more then 3 colors at a time, or you could have a Banksy unsigned print mass produced by POW for the same price. I'll take the Listers. Bottom line. Buy what you enjoy because the music will stop eventually.

I agree, I think Baldwin will be masive.
IMO his show at Opus last year was fantastic, and the quality of his prints (Harwood King) is second to none, his last release being a #50 edition with a special #20 edition each hand finished.
I believe he is now with Forster with a solo show in September.
He also has a 5 page spread in this month's (May) edition of Elle Decoration.

I've never liked Lister or Baldwin..none of their stuff strikes me. I do like some comic book art and disney in the form of faile banksy bast bugs etc..

listers print runs seem to be always quite small 30 or so, so they're going to sell out on pre orders. some of his images are great, see his capt. americas on k gallery. I like the fact he's on the forum, shows he's interested in whats going on / paranoid he's getting slated.. delete as applicable!!

Lister has a very unique style - comic book art ? Glad to own some of his original works. I do not think you can rate an artist's work on the basis of his / her print sales (sold out in seconds = great / still available = weak). Prints are just signed papers and often only bought for flipping reasons, IMO.

The latest Lister release sold out on pre- sales, you can't get sell out much more quickly than that! The prints that were originally sold by stupidkrap for Au$120 generally go for about GBP250 which seems like a pretty substantial appreciation to me if that's what you're looking for.

Anyway, I think that it's a mistake to judge art and artists by the rate at which their work sells out. The forum loves to build up and the tear down artists- Walker, Faile, Lister, Neate, Baldwin, Dface and so on. All have, at various times, been cool/ not cool/ popular/ not popular. It's got far more to do with fashion and the perceived 'flippability' of the art than the quality of the image concerned.

Lister has pathos. You can feel it. There's glam, but it's the glam of the down and out, the miserables, the poor, the addicts and powerless ... it's not your usual loud political, anti establishment statements.

i think the artists closests to Lister in terms of the feeling the work gives would be Swoon with the funk of Choe and a light dash of Ian Francis (very un-trendy artists)
