Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by alsbabar on Jul 1, 2009 13:28:05 GMT 1, if we can help others who are not as clued up (no disrespect intended) in identifying the fakes out there, then hopefully we can save someone from getting ripped off.
We also know that ebay wont do anything to remove fake listings.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by manty on Jul 1, 2009 14:00:34 GMT 1, And what if one of the so called fakes are actually genuine, and proved to be so ?
Just a suggestion, but maybe a newbie buyers beware guide to banksy- ebay would suffice?

I would think it could be a bit mission impossible and very expensive though. Look at all the huge brand copies that get through on ebay, and these guys have millions to throw at this, but.........................

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Zippy on Jul 1, 2009 14:15:42 GMT 1, Completely agree 100% with alsbabar (never thought i'd ever say that!). There are new people buying banksy pieces and many would hopefully look to a forum for advice on whether pieces are real or fake. If you had only just stumbled across banksy's work and had no idea where to go and therefore searched google, this forum would appear high up on the list. If we can stop 1 person getting ripped off by having this thread stuck at the top - then the forum is doing its job!

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by alsbabar on Jul 1, 2009 14:16:04 GMT 1, there are enough threads or comments that pop up on this forum informing people to fakes, but they get lost after a day or two - so a sticky would keep the thread alive and could be used as good reference point. This forum has a lot of traffic and I am sure lots of people use it as a reference point when researching Banksy's art, and given majority of people are here for the right reasons and love to the mans works, why not do something to help the cause in return.
With regards to genuine pieces, then these would have provenance from PC - and if they did, I doubt the seller would put them up on ebay - it would be a reputable auction house, excluding Lyon and Turnbull
Its a suggestion - I will in future post links of pieces i find on ebay on this thread from here on in.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Guest on Jul 1, 2009 14:23:18 GMT 1, I always try and post fakes when i find them, but the real problem is stopping these twats counterfeiting and faking art, this has to be done at a higher level than the forum. Ebay should be held accountable.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by manty on Jul 1, 2009 14:28:22 GMT 1, Look I hate scammers as much as most, and hate the thought of people getting scammed, and when we start collecting art, watches, toys, dolls whatever a good resource is usually a guide to ensuring what you buy is in fact genuine and what to look out for, like the Lyon and Turnball prov
But I am not arguing against what you suggest Alb, it is a good idea, but its gonna be a huge thread to read :-)

Maybe just have one post on it, that gets updated all the time with current items, so it always reflects what's live?
The problem is it would all rely on one person to do all the work, which could become onerous, unless it was a shared login?

what if there are more than 1 piece? Current items will appear as the newest entry so i dont think that will be a problem and it doesnt rely on one person to do all the work either, its should be done as a collective.

One post, multiple links? -------------------- 1234455 - Avoid
1223345 - This one again ---------------------
I agree that with keeping all, the most recent post will always have the live ones. I was addressing the specific point. Keeping old ones might be useful to form a historic picture of fakes that keep coming back.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 1, 2009 15:52:07 GMT 1, Its a good idea, but it must be kept constructive and helpful to people. The point of a thread like this must be to make people aware of any fake pieces on ebay, and it must be made sure that they are actually Fake!
Its no good just being a thread to moan about things on ebay or a seller you dont like.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Wearology on Jul 2, 2009 4:09:28 GMT 1, The idea is great but it is ripe for the haters on our forum and yes there a few out there boys and girls - to sabbotage (spelled wrong) someone"s ebay listing. Let's give it a go and see where it takes us. Remember the guy on here that bought the Banksy grenade canvas and a lot of people told him it was a fagazy until PC said it was genuine.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Silentbill on Jul 4, 2009 9:50:23 GMT 1, I enquired about 2x Banksy Di-Faced Tenners ยฃ10 Notes on ebay (Item 250455114384). The seller told me:
โThey came from the Crude Oils show he did a few years back...my girlfriend helped out at the show so got a few. They were sent out with the invites for that show and also sold for a tenner. Others were thrown over the fence at Glastonbury Festival and Notting Hill Carnival that yearโ
After missing out on the auction which ended with a ยฃ115 BuyItNow, the seller of this item emailed me to say that "Hiya, down to the last few now, see item number 250457990519"
It appears that the seller has a few of these for auction, could these be genuine?
Thanks

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by Guest on Jul 4, 2009 9:57:15 GMT 1, I thought these notes came from Santas Ghetto 2004, and not Crude Oils.
I would avoid these notes unless they come from somebody with good forum references. There are many fakes out there.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by achtungbono on Jul 6, 2009 15:27:27 GMT 1, personally, I would not have this thread live for legal reasons - this may be just caution on my part, but declaring soemthing a fraud/ fake with no evidence is very risky for the forum - fine, make people aware , but call out threads like this put the forum at threat
also, the thread above re Met - dont you think that the po-lice have enought o do without being bombarded by thousands of emails ? There is a case going on, concerning a hanful of distinctive prints - a call to mail the officers involved for all and sundry ebay purchases ( 1000s of them ) may not be productive in the long run and may divert thin rescources
Just my opinion of course

I dont see how your argument stacks up - there is no naming here, just people pointing out obviously fake pieces being sold on ebay. I dont see how the police resources also will be diverted, all this thread is about is bringing awareness to forum members and those that read it, that there are some pieces on ebay to avoid. Usually the first port of call is to inform ebay that the piece is in your opinion a fake, and if they decide to pull it, they pull it, if they dont at least people who read this thread know to avoid.

Banksy's on eBay โข Real or Fake?, by achtungbono on Jul 7, 2009 10:52:52 GMT 1, unfort mate there is a history of hysterical call outs in the forum - many are baseless - witness the test happy choppers posts of a month or so ago
If I genuinely was selling a banksy on ebay that was the subject of vigorous slagging and thus decreased the price, then I would be more than pissed off - more so if the slagging involved allegations of me being a faker - which is the inviablem collateral of such a debate
We all know how this forum can be used as a blunt instrument of manipulation by those with an agenda - rampin or slagging are machiavellian approaches we have all seen on here
A handful of people on here have the ground level expertise to make a statemnt that has kudos and gives a degree of assurance or confidence.

but the landscape for selling has changed, all 'genuine' pieces will either have provenance or could be obtained to support their sale - the pieces listed on this thread so far - simply dont.
