Banksy Grappling Hook, by ®at on Dec 15, 2017 0:04:50 GMT 1, Fascinating decision. Thank you for sharing this. My natural instinct would be to say 'no' unless you line up a buyer before putting the money down, take a hefty deposit from them, have a written contract outlining payment terms and the handling of the Pest Control COA, and get a handsome commission given the hassle/risk involved. It's gotta be worth it. I look at something like this as a trap. It beckons you in 'look, a rare Banksy, oh buy me' but then, after the glow wears off, several months or years later, you have a pricey item with a very small market. This is niche, very niche and, as a result, will be harder to move and will appreciate slower(or depreciate faster as the case may be) than items with more broad-based appeal(for example, a 'Girl with Balloon' that will easily hang above the sofa). Look at the past history of the Watchtowers from 2007. Does that make you more or less confident? To me, the Banksy print/edition market is a massively overinflated bubble and bubbles pop, making a big mess for everyone caught in 'em. Further, I was taught, and have learned hard lessons, that you never buy atypical works. EVER. Like special edition artist books, the atypical work tends to be a sucker bet. This current piece combines both of these and, IMO, rather loudly yells 'pass'. Interesting points.
Similar process to the ghetto in 2007, when I was surprised to get the phone calls... the difference of course being the prices then (including the watchtowers - of which I had a couple) were a fraction of this piece. They were niche indeed - in my opinion far less niche than this - but far from worthless, and of course with far less exposure/risk should it be treated solely as an investment/flip.
The obvious sticking point is the PC terms which obviously affects the potential to sell, should that be the sole intention. Would they need to view it in the presence of the original owner in Jan 2019 in order to issue it? Under what circumstances would they refuse to issue it?
The decision you really have to make is, if you were to buy it and couldn't sell it for whatever reason, would you want - and indeed could you afford - to have it on display in your house?
Note - ghetto pieces in the UK were charged VAT when collected from Dora, so presume the same would apply to this.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by Dive Jedi on Dec 15, 2017 9:12:08 GMT 1, Kind of surprising all is focused on the probable investment possibilities. No questions if this is "going to a good home" ? No bashing of this "potential flipper"?
It's a cool piece. If you think so as wel, buy it. IF you can afford it. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Can't afford it? Don't buy it.
Buying with a few friends? BAD IDEA. Unless you want to get rid of them.
Don't like it, but have 1.000 bitcoins bought for GPB 23 - go for it!
But based on your post : If you have to ask, the answer is NO.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by moron on Dec 15, 2017 12:09:05 GMT 1, This piece is far from atypical. Banksy made Christ with shopping bags, Toxic Mary, plus his hotel is in Bethleham with portrait of Christ with a red dot, plus the children in heaven and cherubs etc.
Regarding buying and the price. My view is that all art that is for sale at high prices should be viewed as an investment or as to it's financial security. That's the world we live in today and thats down also to the fact that art has been turned into a luxury commodity where high dollar art is n o more than a fashion brand and a social statement amongst the uber bubers.
The very wealthy can buy this piece to impress their friends over a dinner party and then forget about it and how much it cost. The people who work hard for their money and are moderately wealthy have to plan for the future just like everyone else does. The people on low incomes can afford low priced art which is just the same as art that sells for a million dollars and just as good.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by Rouen Cathedral on Dec 15, 2017 13:41:41 GMT 1, So does this make it official. Banksy has joined the high elite art world first hand?
Sure his secondary prices and market has been there awhile. But not we have an official released prices in the tens of thousands that can only go to ‘public rich collectors or investors’.
Seems to be a pivot for team banksy. Hello elite art world!

kind of everyone writes: "buy it! either alone or with friends and after receiving the coa in 2019 put it up at an auction house! go ahead and make a sh1tload of money, pal!"
so flipping usually gets cursed on here. and in this case it is absolutely ok?

Quick, think of Banksy. What popped in to 80%+ of people? An image of a stencil work.
That is what I mean by typical. As Lee pointed out, he has done plenty of sculpture/installation work. Despite, the 'image' of Banksy is not of that work. It is a stencil. It's why everyone who sees a random stencil on a door in an alley thinks 'is that a Banksy?'.
'Daddy, daddy, buy me a Banksy for Chistmas.' 'Sure Bianca. Anything for daddy's girl in order to make up for the damage my working 18+ hours a day, while sleeping with my secretary, caused during your formative years. Oh, don't forget my poor habit of drinking whisky and staring at the bodies of your friends'
-Daddy buys a stencil work on canvas for the wall.
'Sir Serota, we would like the museum to add a work by that popular little rascal. The funny, hip one that hates Israel. What's his name?' 'Certainly, my 80-year-old massively rich anti-Semitic patron. He goes by the name Banksy, but you may have seen him on Top of The Pops as part of his band Massive Attack. I'll get right on that'
-Sir Serota arranges the acquisition of a lovely stencil work on something flat.
