Banksy Grappling Hook, by larsson on Dec 14, 2017 14:50:43 GMT 1, Congratulations to everyone invited to purchase the 'Crucifix Grappling Hook'. I was in the gift shop the morning after the announcement of 'official merchandise' including the Hook - and put my name on the list. No luck for me on this, Pejac's ship in a bottle, Sale Ends or either of the Invader drops - must do better next year.
However, I did get to meet Danny Boyle, enjoy the Alternativity, get a 'box set' - and have the pleasure of living and working in the West Bank.
Ps. If you can afford the Grappling Hook then I'd go for it - but can imagine it's a tough call to make.
Pps. If you're visiting the Walled Off next week - then Roger Walters is playing Bethlehem main square on Dec 22nd! Local band 'Apo and the Apostles' will be playing too - they're really great live.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by Deleted on Dec 14, 2017 15:39:28 GMT 1, Okay... it's a Banksy... but 40k + Shipping + 19% VAT in Germany ?! Wow... The PEJAC sculpture for 2.3k seems a steal compared to this price tag... Hard decision... I would also follow cyberkid's advice... There is zero comparison between Pejac and Banksy.
People wont care about Pejac in a years time, Banksy i'm pretty sure they will for decades.

Market value is bogus.
What are these worth do you think? More then 40k
If that’s well below market value then Banksy is officially part of the ‘art world’. Ironic huh? Or has he been part of it for years now. You tell me.

Can you find me a comparable? These aren’t originals... not quite a small edition really either.
I’m sure some will try to say it’s rarer cause it’s a sculpture so it’s worth more. I think quite the opposite really. Do we even know if banksy made these? How do we know these weren’t made by those doing the box sets?
40k is ridiculous. Cash grab from the VIPS!

I think we can assume Banksy didn't hand make each one... but maybe he did! I don't know, and I don't think it matters. He didn't sculpt any of his sculptures, bronze rats, etc.
Nearest things I can compare these to is the small canvases, like Paranoid Pictures, that were editions of 25. Like this one that sold recently for £112,500: www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2016/contemporary-art-day-auction-l16025/lot.193.html
Bronze Rats are maybe more iconic, and slightly smaller edition, but also well over £100,000 (£137,000!) www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/banksy-b-1975-bronze-rat-6060146-details.aspx
But only time will tell... A very short time after the COAs are delivered!

Banksy Grappling Hook, by lee3 on Dec 14, 2017 18:14:28 GMT 1, Interesting discussion though I would disagree with anyone who states the medium of sculpture is atypical for this artist. The atrium at bristol museum was all sculpture as was the inclusion of the village pet store. Most of Dismaland was the same. There have been sculptures of sorts at most, if not all of his shows since the beginning. I'm not disagreeing to disagree but he's a pretty well rounded artist conceptually including the big screen.
Haring sculptures may be a tougher sell than the works on canvas or tarp but I believe that is true of most artists regardless. Richard Serra or James Turrell are about as good as it gets for installation but most collectors there eyeball the oil stick on paper for the former and the sky drawings and geometric wall pieces for the latter. Robert Indiana love is iconic in sculpture form yet the drawings, prints and canvas of the same do better by comparison. It's simply a more difficult medium for most collectors to wrap our collective heads around is my thinking but ymmv. Good luck in your decision either way.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by ToonKiller on Dec 14, 2017 18:19:44 GMT 1, Draft an agreement Find close family friends Each pitch in an affordable amount - say 5k Pay for item with consolidated funds Hang it at home bask in its artistic glory for an amazing year Off to the auction house - reserved at 120k Split as per signed agreement Win win win win ? Personally I would buy it!
Sure, you have money to put down on a house but, you might possibly have the money to buy the house out right in a couple of years if you buy the hook.
But if if I didn't have the funds or only had part of the funds I'd follow the advice above.

Nope.
The local people deserve it.
Is that where the money goes?
Or is he just using the hotel and attention to sell 40k sculptures now?

Banksy Grappling Hook, by iamzero on Dec 14, 2017 19:49:12 GMT 1, I think the hook is one of the strongest things he’s done and would love to be in a position to buy it. I’ve been lucky enough to have held both the olive wood tower and one of the bronze rats and the rat is my favourite. I can’t see any reason why the hook want climb in price once into the hands of the big hitters. I’d be tempted to contact someone like Castle Gallery to see if he has someone on his client list that will be happy to take it off your hands.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by d.r. perseus on Dec 14, 2017 20:44:20 GMT 1, Is there any evidence in the past of limited bansky pieces selling for less than retail?
My guess is no but many here know the answer without guessing.
If that's the case, you could recoup cost in a year and get your house. Houses are not once in a blue moon opportunities.
Good luck
