I always thought it subverts religion and almost acts like an escape from religion
If you contextualise the piece within the confinement of Palestine
The sacred nature of the symbol is being replaced with a weapon to escape the oppressive nature And literally vault the walls
Perhaps a comment on how religion has caused a lot of suffering in the region

first time was seen at the Walled Off Hotel, perfect place for this piece
a really strong and powerful sculpture.

I think it was sold via raffle at the walled off hotel, original price was 45k usd plus vat if I'm not wrong

I've always thought of it, wether you are a 'believer' or not, at the sheer hypocracy that the birthplace of Jesus is now smack bang in the middle of an open prison surrounded by war, torture and prejudice and perhaps the only salvation is over the wall using a grappling hook.  In the words of Patti Smith "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine".

I agree. Problem with the major auction houses is that they want to put lower reserves to attract buyers (Sothebys for example, as they always do) and there is no guarantee. As there is no real RECENT sales history, it's a hard one!

I wouldn't worry about selling with a low estimate for a piece like this which hardly comes up (relative to some of the prints, which pop up in most sales).  There may well be downside risk from a low estimate/reserve, but there is also the prospective upside of it really flying at auction.

Yep … auction it if you dont get the bites you want. They will have estimates but some auction houses will stipulate a reserve price will come into effect at a later date, so no issue there.

Sculptures are hit and miss for artists if their primary work is something else like painting/stenciling/prints.

I enjoy this piece very much, but my OCD triggers on the cross aspect with it being historically inaccurate. But maybe that adds to the charm of the piece.

The watch towers went unsold for many years when they were contanyly for sale on eBay 2010-2013 from 2-4K when the prints started to have a run of increased prices

Just an update on this - no deal done as yet! Had some very interesting offers - here is just a few examples............

For one reason or another, none have come to fruition - however what I can tell everyone is that the responses have been positive and at last the Grappling Hook seems to have the love it deserves! I have had many people tell me not to sell as there is no other original on the market for this price range, to hang on for this year as something big is happening etc etc.

With that much interest, I wouldn't hesitate to get it put in a top auction. If those offers are genuine, then they will be there with many others come auction day. It's easy for me to say, but I wouldn't worry about a low reserve. It will reach the top amount someone is willing to pay.

Very true - we had a few discussions about it and i was interested (but not 100%) - he then decided after taking some advice that it wasn't for him, but quote 'he would probably regret it in a couple of years'

I am not going to reveal who it was, but he knows his stuff and has bought and sold numerous Banksy's.

I would hold on to this. This is so different than his other pieces yet has a lot of the distinct qualities of a Banksy in the concepts behind it, plus its got a level of controversy above the usual societal woes, this bad boy will be highly sought after in my opinion.

The offers are pretty good I think considering its an edition of 26. Also works on canvas will always command a premium, this one will not be for everyone considering the difficulty of displaying and the subject matter. Personally I’d take the signed GWB.

Yes everyone has their opinion and 2/3 years ago the Hook wasn't that popular. However, after appearing in the window of the GDP event in London, it has become more sought after. You have to remember, yes there is 26 of these, but they are not all out there, I would guess there is less than 20 in private hands. 

These are also hand painted, meaning every one is slightly sifferent, hand made, and the box it comes in has four original sprayed stencils, with painting!
