Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by Matt on May 15, 2019 16:31:47 GMT 1, Fair point, but also a good deal of survivor bias in that reasoning. A more relevant angle is to look up who was "blue chip" in the era of Warhol / Basquiat / Haring / Lichtenstein, but has been completely forgotten since A majority of the artists we talk about here will suffer the same fate Agreed, that's an even more interesting and meaningful way to look at it. Anyway to easily run down a list of the artists that were "blue chip" 30 years ago but are now just footnotes in art history? It would be a fascinating exercise. met, if you read this, where would you start to build such a list ?

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by Deleted on May 16, 2019 19:46:17 GMT 1, Also are there any of these top artists who didn't go to art school? Do you have to have RCA, Goldsmiths etc on your resume to be taken seriously? i'm not including street art in that question before you start reeling of banksy and co. Although he did go posh school :-)

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by kuni on May 17, 2019 12:53:45 GMT 1, $2.66M (hammer) for Smurf Eats Hotdog. For a little more you could have had a Basquiat.
Solid results for a Cecily Brown ($3.6M, whoβs one of my favorite living artists at the moment.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by Wearology on May 17, 2019 15:18:44 GMT 1, I went to my 1st live auction last night and it was certainly a very interesting evening. I would like to congratulation living legend LA2 aka Angel Ortiz for having his drawing with a Sharpie Marker on paper that he did with Keith back in the day hammer at $1,055,000 including fees. The only real excitement in the room was when Kaws's Spong Bob went into a good old fashion bun fight mixed with some behind the scenes drama from the Calder Family.
The excitement really came with the KAWS. The white-hot artistβs THE WALK HOME (2012) depicts SpongeBob SquarePants screaming with his arms in the air, the trademark KAWS double-X gracing his eyes; with it being 2019 and all, this is a picture that multiple people are willing to spend millions of dollars on. After bidding from senior specialist Kevie Yang, deputy chairman Jonathan Crockett, deputy chairman Jean-Paul Engelen, and head of private sales Miety Heiden, deputy chairman Robert Manley swooped in and secured the KAWS for his client with a $5 million hammer. With fees, the price came to just under $6 millionβmore than four times what a phone client paid two lots earlier for a classic work by Alexander Calder, whose grandson Sandy Rower abruptly got up and exited as the KAWS bidding went higher and higher.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by irl1 on Jul 13, 2019 23:07:16 GMT 1, Fascinating article, thanks for posting. Having dabbled in machine learning and neural networks in healthcare robotics, I can see that the software engineer, Mr Devin Liu, has put together a well constructed model. He is also probably going to put a lot of people out of a job in his current capacity as "automating repetitive job functions for large enterprise companies." However, he has not factored in potential buyers reading this article and the impact that may or may not have on biasing the end result. Historically, buyers of deaccessioned pieces are the mega-dealers (Zwirner par examplar) whom make it their raison d'etre to be incredibly well informed. Follow up

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ NEW YORK πΊπ², by Deleted on Oct 20, 2020 12:30:11 GMT 1, Not the biggest fan of Banksy but love Damien Hirst. I find him incredibly authentic as an artist when compared to someone like Koons.
The Hirst spot paintings / prints were the Deutsche Bank special for many years, about as yuppie as you could get. They adorned the walls of many 3 bedroom, multi-million pound "starter flats" for those working in finance.
The piece is pretty self explanatory - I think its a nice bit of art history and not that Wanky for a Banksy.
