Backdoor Banksy Prints, by Masong on Oct 17, 2018 21:39:17 GMT 1, As a matter of interest what do people think to the likes of The West Country Prince effecting/affecting the authenticity of a back door print. It’s only the stamp on the back that apparently separates them.

That’s all I’m contributing to the thread.

Pretty much sums up what I was thinking

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by lha on Sept 27, 2020 21:42:39 GMT 1, Backdoors will no doubt be more difficult to come by and prob cost more now in light of recent prices. Difficult to get hold of with any kind of strong back story or email trail but they are out there. But so are good fakes. If anyone has a WSM backdoor drop me a PM.

they look just as good on the wall and some great variations that never hit the market too.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by Daniel Silk on Mar 15, 2021 7:42:05 GMT 1, Isn’t a backdoor Print basically the same as a overrun?
Like when Nike or Adidas have factories making trainers for them, and they make slightly more than the customer ordered, so cover unforeseen damages or imperfections. After the factories sell the overruns off to at least cover the manufacturing costs. So at that time Banksy or POW outsourced the printing, and the printers had overrun. It then comes down to if Banksy had some sort of concrete agreement with the printers for destruction of any overruns? I doubt it, coz at that time I don’t think they thought it would ever be a problem. So I guess the Printers sold a few off, probably unofficially, but still probably normal practice for them.
What do you think?

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by LJCal on Apr 22, 2021 16:25:18 GMT 1, Plenty of Warhol unsigned proofs outside the edition (nice way of saying back door print) are sold by top tier auction houses who can authenticate them. They sell for 40-70% of the value of a signed impression. When C P Mulder (one of Warhol's printers) died he had a huge collection of surplus Warhol prints from outside editions which have made it to the market over the years, I own one of them in fact and Sotheby's authenticated it and are willing to offer at auction. Just something to think about for those who own a back door print they are confident was from the printer. They're worth very little now but depending how his market goes could have value to your kids and their kids.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by Daniel Silk on May 10, 2021 3:53:10 GMT 1, The artist/print house own the image, paid the costs associated with the item's production, and never authorized its removal and/or sale. Seems to be pretty clearly stolen property. And isn't it against the rules to sell stolen goods on ebay? For example, if an entire print run was numbered, then anything that is not numbered (I'd include A/P, P/P as "numbered") is obviously back door, and its origins are spurious. What do the rest of you think? (here is what got me thinking . . . tinyurl.com/2n6mj2 ) I doubt they were “Stolen” I would think the situation was that the printers made extra, and then sold or maybe even gave them away, so the issue is between the Artist and the Printer. I should think it’s unlikely the Printer would get away with saying the prints were stolen from their premises, the more likely scenario would be it was all happening with management and staff knowledge, almost like a perk of the job.
Example - I once worked at a Brewery, where we Brewed and Bottled alcoholic drinks for other companies and it was common for staff to drink the product that was currently in production. And when at the end of the production run, we had extras left over, the staff would get some free each month.
So I can see a possible scenario with staff at printers being able to take home Banksy Prints as a perk.

I've a banksy Backdoor bought from Backdoor Brummie a long time ago - it's very slightly miscropped and therefore couldn't be part of the edition, but the image is perfect. BDB told me that damaged prints etc were gifted to printing staff at the time. Of course prices then were no were near the prices now, and I doubt anyone could see what was coming - so probably didn't think twice about handing a small number of each edition out that couldn't be sold via POW etc....

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by jayd2012 on Sept 23, 2021 10:50:32 GMT 1, HI I bought a print of Banksy's 'Flying Copper' (blue background) back around 2003 from a shop in Columbia Road, East London. At the time I didn't buy it as an investment - I just really liked it and it wasn't expensive. However about 10 years later I started to realise that this print was becoming quite valuable and then suddenly realised it didn't have a number on the bottom. On the same day my brother bought the 'Bomb Hugger' print which did have a number. We know this shop sold legitimate prints as we have other friends who bought from there too. Im trying to get some proof of authenticity but I have no proof of purchase and no number. Its really frustrating as I know its genuine and if (due to covid) I didn't need the money I would just enjoy having it in my house - but times are tough and im wondering what Pest Control will say if I try and apply for authentication. I don't want to waste my £50 if its a blanket 'No' I went back to the shop about 10 years ago and the guy said that sometimes Banksy gave extra prints that were unnumbered to the shop just in case prints were damaged. Clearly it was a mistake from the shop to sell me this possible - but it is still a genuine print - Im just struggling to understand how I convince anyone else. Any help, really appreciated. Many thanks Jay

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by My Name is Frank on Sept 23, 2021 11:05:41 GMT 1, I had a weston super mare unnumbered that I purchases direct from POW. It was a case of proving that I had made the purchase and they then arranged for me to visit and get it numbered a number of years after purchase, they are aware this was a problem in the early days, but I really had to prove the purchase part with emails and bank statements.
I think the problem you have is you are a third party on this. Does the shop still operate? It may be your only route to provenance, if they can show a receipt of purchase (email confirmation or bank transfer from/ to POW) and you can show a subsequent purchase from them?
Good luck, but be prepared to enjoy this as a backdoor print if that shop has ceased trading or has no records of the original purchase.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by Terry Fuckwitt on Sept 23, 2021 13:33:27 GMT 1, Do you know the name of the shop? If it was Nelly Duff, they are still going and could be worth talking to. They might still hold records of transactions. A long shot, but worth a go. Unfortunately, I don't think you can get statements that far back from your bank. Good luck and let us know the outcome though, as it will be interesting to know.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by dzigavertov on Sept 29, 2021 11:53:05 GMT 1, Honestly chap, I can't understand why you say you don't want to give 50 quid to PC on the chance that it might come to nothing...if I were you I would be see your 50 quid outlay as a 2 to 1 chance that it might give you a return of 30 grand! I would imagine a PC COA is the only way you have a chance of realising your print's potential worth if indeed it is authentic. Take the punt, but don't expect a quick turnaround in terms of a decision by PC
