A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Hairbland on Oct 10, 2018 16:27:04 GMT 1, Now we know where Moron got his Jeremy Beadle remark from. Moron, moron, moron ..... you only have it in store, you are at the limit of your reasoning? difficult to argue with a disrespectful child who thinks he knows everything. Can you admit that your truth may not be the truth and that people may not be of your opinion? I prefer to look at the thread from far enough and keep my energy at more essential things What is your problem? Do you not understand I am referring to a provocative forum member named Moron, not calling someone a moron, much like you are named Extraball? Maybe you should get that extra ball examined, it seems to be affecting your reading comprehension.
Nothing has been of my opinion, just a discussion of Hype versus Mainstream, with a specific member referred to by his/her name. You might want to pause, take a breath, move on.

There is more than one way of looking at this Sothebys stunt and more than one opinion. Free speech rules.

Seems your mate Jerry changed his tune about this latest Banksy performance kinetic art.
"The critic Jerry Saltz was an initial believer, who wrote on Sunday that “I’m not a Banksy fan but this made [me] want to dance barefoot with him.” By Tuesday, he had changed his tune: “Good morning Sotheby’s: Did you enjoy doing your little Banksy dance? Con?” he wrote."

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by KGR on Oct 12, 2018 4:30:49 GMT 1, I bet the buyer is happy with her purchase considering she now has two Paintings. I bet once they take the back off the frame there will be the original painting rolled up in the bottom of the frame with that she can frame up and she can leave the second shredded painting out the bottom as the original piece. Win win situation......

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by eyectopus on Oct 12, 2018 7:56:34 GMT 1, Even if the mechanism rolled up the canvas rather than shredding it, the piece would not be as intended and would not look as good. The unshredded section in the frame is a key part.
I originally thought that the mechanism had failed when only half was shredded. I thought the fully shredded image would look better as it happened. Now that I look at it, it is more practical to display with half of the image still in the frame. It keeps the piece including the frame as one and allows the piece to be viewed more easily.
Also it offers a lot more opportunity for mockups and other art based on it where it allows for a transition between shredded and unshredded. Some examples have been seen already on this thread.

The article said the print was purchased directly in 2006? So the modified shredder has been in the frame the entire time? How does it still have power? Cause its BS

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by jimbofatz on Oct 12, 2018 13:29:31 GMT 1, Hate to impose logic here but go and field test this stunt yourself...go to an auction and destroy a million dollar art work immediately on completion and wait for the applause. Instantly you are facing destruction of property over 1 million and a whole bunch of other charges at well over 1million dollars --once you include all the damage to the auction houses reputation you would be facing a long stay in a cell. Now we know the seller already has it and everyone is happy giggling all by saying "we've been banksy'd". If you did this yourself I can promise you it wouldn't all be cleared up in a week. With the auctioneer immediately saying we've been Banksy'd. How the hell would he know that with the siren and the shread noise and the shock and noise he was obviously was trying to avoid a panic terrorist type attack reaction. This was a performance.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 12, 2018 18:01:22 GMT 1,
The picture was the last lot of the sale, so who knows. Was it a fake sale with Sothebys and the bidders in the room in on it?
Dr Bendor Grovsenor, has a very good take on the Banksy stunt from someone with a lot of art world knowledge.
www.arthistorynews.com/articles/5303_Shredding_Banksy
"Sotheby’s twice asked the artist - through his market friendly authentication service Pest Control - whether they could open the frame, and were told no. I wonder why they didn’t just ask the owner. The provenance given by Sotheby’s was clear; the picture was acquired by the vendor directly from the artist in 2006, and therefore according to Sotheby’s was not owned by Banksy himself."
"whoever consigned the work took a significant risk, and must have known that they’d potentially lose a significant amount of money. This (combined with the likelihood that the mechanism was installed after the date of acquisition in 2006) implies either that a) the vendor was already rich enough, or b) they’re close to Banksy himself, and were happy to let him do his trick."
"There is another possibility of course; that the vendor was someone with a close interest in sustaining wider Banksy prices. Here’s how it works; the contemporary art market, with its fondness for editions that are easily commodified, loves a good benchmark price. That Banksy/Warhol/Koons made £xm? This one must also be worth £xm! A cleverly consigned work here, a few bids or bidding partners there, and hey presto; you’ve got a new asset value. Even the risk of paying out some auction house commission - if you end up with your picture back - would be worth it for the new price level (and in this case the worldwide PR bonanza.)"
"More interesting is what it tells us about Banksy. Is he the anti-market hero the press have made him out to be? Jonathan Jones in The Guardian buys that theory completely. But I doubt it. Banksy depends on the market. If he didn't care about the market, he wouldn't offer the Pest Control authentication service."
