A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Dive Jedi on Oct 6, 2018 19:18:01 GMT 1, In my opinion the canvas is being pulled down and around by a roller with a puller mechanism and the shredded paper is being fed down by the same mechanism. But what do I know. The angle is masking the print to shred alignment. I think you guys might be right. That seems to make the most sense. in that case it would be ubercool. Since that would mean you could roll it back. And "shred" it at every dinner party.
In either case - briljant piece.
It showed in the main 8 pm news here in NL.

Search for the "consequence of sound" page.

No one ever questioned how David Copperfield levitated over the grand canyon, or walked through the great wall of China, they just revelled in his genius!

I think he prefers to be referred to as an illusionist.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Lord Lucas Roham on Oct 6, 2018 21:42:07 GMT 1, Great stunt but that's exactly what this is. Wouldn't be surprised if Sotheby's, who apparently owned the work where in on this. Not withstanding the excessive weight which would surely have been scrutinised how the hell do you get a battery to hold a charge for 12 years??
Like any good magic trick I don't want to know how how it's done, I am just enjoying the show.

Superb all the same!

If Sotheby’s were not in on this it would be a major concern that someone could smuggle a remote controlled electronic device into the auction.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 6, 2018 22:57:26 GMT 1, Just a thought here. But if Sotheby's was in on this banksy is basically pulling a stunt with a partner in a major art world auction house.
No one else sees that as weird based on the whole premise of banksy?

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by rbrt on Oct 7, 2018 12:26:43 GMT 1, It really would surprise me if Sotheby's were part of this. Sotheby's is definitely part of the art establishment and pranks like this would have an effect on their image IMO.
I noticed someone posted here that this was a gift to Jo Brooks and Jo posted the Banksy website update on her instagram account yesterday and the Peckham Rock Museum info recently so seems to be still doing PR for Banksy. So knowingly or not Jo may have been in on this.
When Pest Control was first set up I registered a relatively early and rare Banksy print I own straight away. A few months later PC got in touch and said they have had someone else try and register the print but it had the same number. They said they have no concerns that both prints were real but asked me to bring in my print (which was framed) to check in person. They checked it while I waited and it was fine.
One guess by me is if Jo Brooks or someone from Banksy's team were involved in this sale direct to Sotheby's which is likely as the GWB really does look recent rather than 2006 then PC may have given a reason to Sotheby's to check the art in person and whilst they had it check the battery and everything was working fine.
Banksy and his team have set up Cans Festival, Dismaland and a show in the Bristol Museum without people knowing what is going on and revealing what was happening till the last minute. It does feel to me the Banksy team could pull this off without Sotheby's knowing. Especially with Sotheby's thinking about the £s to be made on a unique GWB canvas in 2018 they would be accommodating to Pest Control.

It works , as previously said gimmicks used every so often , 6 months? To self promote and helps the high end market. Prints for the last 4 months that usually sell as soon as being listed now stay unsold for longer , we”ll see if this has any effect on recent market pricings , suppose another high end auction again soon and something with the woh?

I find this stunt so interesting. Firstly, the build up to the auction was significant. I can’t remember a time where a painting has been so hyped. I have seen both collectors and press alike referencing this as possibly the first public 1m plus painting by the artist (not collaboration) weeks before the event. This was ‘obviously’ planned. The price tag adds further weight to the act of destroying the painting.
The painting itself is interesting. Executed in 2006 - clearly not correct and again part of the plan. This IMO is a very recent painting. The auction house requested potential buyers to refer to the department for a professional condition report. Big push by the house to describe the frame as intrinsic to the piece and sold ‘as is’. Potential buyers prior to the evening sale who offering very high sums were told no. It was to go to auction. Signed and dedicated on the reverse by Banksy to Jo, with a small heart and present indicating this as a gift from the artist, indicates that this could have potentially have been consigned by Jo Brooks, giving further weight to the plan and sale. This was also not the first time the artist has produced a ‘shredded’ work, but the first I believe of a GWB image.
The sale itself is really interesting. Displayed very prominently. Last on the block, despite better works. The gentleman that was caught recording audio is clearly part of the operation. The act of shredding was almost directly after the hammer. Interesting to note the change of gavel from hand to hand and a deliberate push or action with the other hand by the auctioneer. The removal of the piece was incredibly swift. The piece that was sold directly after the banksy is an unusual move. I wouldn’t be happy if that was mine and the house was complicit due to the hysteria.
The piece has PC, but will the ‘buyer’ if legitimate continue with the purchase. If so will PC offer COA based on its new form? Will we see this back on the auction block in a few years, thus making this prank everything it set out to mock. Who knows? I have no fucking idea, but I love it.
