DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by buffin on Nov 24, 2007 9:44:10 GMT 1, The D*Face lenticular seems to be receiving a mixed reception. Gimmick or innovation? Personally I haven't seen it in the flesh but to me it looks amazing and works well with the images.
Got to thinking could it work for other images. Is it an answer to the lack of wall space? Could you have differant placard rats for instance ?

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by sausageboonwee on Nov 24, 2007 10:07:34 GMT 1, It's really grown on me. I think it's rubbish that people say it's a gimmick. I think it's good to see some creativity and it seems to work really well. Julian Opie has also used lenticulars on full size pieces of art (not just his postcards) and his look amazing too.

Think it's a brilliant idea, I'm sure many people have had the idea but not the means to produce it. The fact that D has not only made it, but has also recognised that it's important to do so, lifts him into the realms of pure pop. It's a great piece of neo pop art for this age of mass media consumer product madness. We're living in an age of pop x 10..ya gotta look beyond the appearance. To tap into this "gimmick" of sales and collecting tat made in china, really places the piece at the heart of this shift from street to gallery by urban artists. A step forward and lifts the bar for a lot of people involved in this kind of art.
Respect

Would be fantastic to do the same for a pop tart in various stages of decomposition!

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by mred on Nov 24, 2007 10:28:38 GMT 1, Lenticulars are great fun, have a couple at home which I picked up from Hotwell Gallery in Bristol probably around 2002/3. I think the firm that made them were called 4D Interlace although cannot see there website anymore.
I have one called "Idol Progress" which uses a Blake image and the second image of the lenticular to suggest who might be equivalent circa 2002 e.g. Elvis - Robbie Williams, Coke - McD, etc.
The other one takes idea in different direction and uses a number of images to introduce a level of animation, the one I have got is based on a group of geese done for KLM and as you move past it the geese are animated and do a pretty good impression of flying. Mines pretty small but apparently these were done on really large scale and put on side of buses, how cool would that have been to see as it drove past you!!!! Seen lots of other ideas for this technique including Ali throwing a punch!!!
Sorry for rant, what was the question again - think gimmick unfair but is a bit of a attention seeking technique hence wide use in advertising. IMHO not way forward to solve wall space issue. To be honest they are not great at looking at static images but work well if the two or more underlying images interact to give more e.g. geese flying or making a comment about how we have progressed.
This thread has reminded me what great pieces 4D Interlace did, maybe I should try and track them down and see what they are up to now. Hopefully still in business!!!

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by Monkey on Nov 24, 2007 10:51:52 GMT 1, Ive slept on it and come to the conclusion that at the minute £1200 is a bit out of my price range at mo . As much as i love the Dface lenticular i dont fancy putting myself £1200 in the red so close to xmas. So, If someone is looking for a lenticular (i got the last available one) then i suggest you either ring or drop BRP an email at about dinner. Just in the process at min of writing an email asking Sarah to...cancel my order . Good luck interested people, Hope you get it rather than paying over inflated prices to those bastard flippers on the bay...

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by Cocteau 101 on Nov 24, 2007 11:12:40 GMT 1, I've seen it and to be honest I love it, it's an iconic Dface image made even more special with the treatment. I think the negativity is subconciously more as a result of the price than the work. I think if this was seen more widely it would great an even greater reaction.

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by pkt75 on Nov 24, 2007 11:25:16 GMT 1, It was the morning of the 22nd when I heard what the release was gonna be and my immediate thoughts were shear panic and to sell my DSTQ print in order to fund HRH. When I arrived at BRP and I could see it right at the back of the gallery perfectly lit with an amazing backdrop my excitment could virtually be contained. When I arrived home, I was still on top of the world with it. Next morning with a saw head and and empty wallet I started packing up my DSTQ print to send to her new owner. It started then-REGRET! Its a great piece in its own right and where ever you stand in the room, Queenies head is slightly decomposed perfectly with no flaws to it composition. It's just that Im finding it hard to love as much as my DSTQ. I think the problem is a couple of things the main one being the frame its in cheapens it and my DSTQ was in a 'way over the top' Camp gilt frame which was done only a week ago so I have lost the dramatics. secondly, it may be a DSTQ and a canis in one, i jus cant appreciate it like i would having the two prints on there own. Dont get me wrong, I do love it and its a great piece conceptually but its not a replacement for the two original prints, its a piece for those that missed out on DSTQ and Canis.
Im back on the market for a DSTQ, but I guess im right at the back of the cue.

NB: *Personal taste will only get you so far, it's mainly for furnishings and curtains no ?. "It's blue and square, I like it, let's buy it honey" ! The more you arm yourself with knowledge of past art, the more likely we'll be able to influence the art of the future by supporting and recognising the importance of some of these works. We can almost taste the onset of consumerism and popular culture of the 50's and 60's just by looking at Pop art. Hopefully in 50 years, people will be able to do the same by looking at some of the pieces currently being produced. Most if not all street art will be gone, this gallery interpretation should ensure that future generations can get a grip on where our heads are at by looking at the art we bought, created and supported as opposed to reading warped and twisted corporate dominated mass media archives of the period.

But I can't find anywhere that will print an image cheaply. I am trying to find away of installing prepared boards into an empty building here in Nottingham that will give the illusion that it is a giant fish tank. Is that still graf? I think so. Site Specific. Anyway that is another thread. I am keen to create movement and depth. Any ideas? Can any post a video or photos of the d-face?

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by melmoth on Nov 24, 2007 16:04:25 GMT 1, When I saw it first, my mind immediately went back to a holiday in Spain when I was a nipper, and saw a Christ one in in store. It was a close-up of him on the cross, and his eyes opened (and stared up) when you/the picture moved. It scared the hell out of me as a kid, which is why I still have flashbacks about it 30 years later. History lesson over!
Anyway, I do very much like the way that the D*face has been implemented. I think that it's a very powerful piece, and I would put it on my wall (if it were to drop about 800 GBP in price).
One last thing. Fans of the band Arcade Fire can now get their very own Neon Bible lenticular for $10:

DFace • Her Royal Hideous, HRH Lenticular, by manty on Nov 24, 2007 17:13:49 GMT 1, Picked mine up ealier, when I saw it at the Gallery i was kinda thinking ummm, its a bit small, but liked it lots
Now its home, and below my DSTQ UJ it looks awesome. I'd take some pics but daughters stole my camera.
Looking at it, it can be framed easily and when its framed I reckon it will look superb :-)
Well chuffed am I
