Compared to recent Jonas Wood prints. I like these.

They remind me of some his paintings from the Gagosian show that were pretty nice. I like his landscapes. Think these will look really nice in a lot of homes.

Also Ukiyo-e Japanese style woodcuts are usually done really well and sometimes very sought after.

As much as I like them, putting big money into Jonas wood prints does not appear wise.

Japanese woodcut prints are great. One artist I enjoy with very reasonable prices is Kaoru Kawano:

Pace Prints is pleased to exhibit Four Landscapes, a new suite of four Ukiyo-e Japanese style woodcuts by Jonas Wood. The prints will be on view March 25 – April 24, 2021, in our 3rd Floor Project Room at 521 West 26th Street.

Jonas Wood collaborated with Pace Editions Master Printer Yasu Shibata on Four Landscapes over more than two years. Drawn from found and personal imagery, the prints embody Wood’s distinctive approach to breaking up and rebuilding an image with additive mark-making and patterning, distilled through the Ukiyo-e printmaker’s subtle command of form and color. Each print required between twelve and twenty wood blocks, which Shibata carved using traditional hand tools. The blocks were inked with up to 73 individual colors, each applied by hand for every impression of the edition. A selection of the hand-carved wood blocks used to print Four Landscapes will be displayed alongside the prints.

The four images all have personal histories for Wood, and he has incorporated each into previous works, whether as the main subject of a canvas, a gouache or a drawing, or as an element within a larger scene. Fall, drawn from a snapshot taken at a roadside attraction on a family trip, shows Wood as a child with his father, sisters and a family friend, posed in front of a giant model dinosaur. The photo, which was taken by the artist’s mother, appears on the wall of an interior scene in the 2007 gouache New Pictures.

Spring and Summer both originated in photos — of Switzerland and Italy’s Amalfi Coast — that family and friends shared with Wood, and which he has painted both in gouache and acrylic. Winter, which appears to depict a modernist house seen from the street, is a recropped section of a 2008 collage which the artist created from his own photographs of his sister’s Minnesota neighborhood. In isolating a detail, Wood makes the composition a study in subtle, almost monochrome, tonalities.

Not sure why so many people on this forum have written off Jonas Wood. A couple of less good prints that didn’t flip well and he’s not a good artist anymore.
Museum shows, works into major collections and regular auctions results of over $1m. He’s a big artist with a big gallery and he’s probably only just getting started.
He’ll soon be planking, squatting and star-jumping his way to a gallery near you.

He’s a fantastic artist. Museums and big galleries love him. His paintings fetch millions. Aaaaaannd.....his prints can be a poor place to park 5 figures. Nothing wrong with all of that being true.

I like his work quite a bit. For me (image dependent) they almost bring feelings of nostalgia while avoiding the trap of imagery that is directly nostalgic. There is a sense of familiarity all while having no direct personal context. There is a timelessness present. Use of color, seemingly simple patterns, and intriguing perspective all lend to this for me. He’s developed his style to a point where you immediately recognize the artist in the work.

And knowing the discussion rules of UAA I’m obligated to say things like Money, eBay, Bitcoin, NFT, and all that.

Thank you. It seems there is a rather large gravitation to the "simple still life" artists and images from the UK and EU. It doesn't seem to resonate much stateside from what I've seen.

Comes down to what resonates with the viewer. His Gagosian show a couple years back was incredible. I also really loved his tennis court paintings at Shane Campbell done from the perspective of a phone camera. He’s heavily influenced by artists like Matisse and Hockney and IMO has done a pretty great job evoking a similar response from his audience as those legends. The works tell a story but rarely feel repetitive or contrived.

The trees and clouds in the first image are just awful. I thought maybe the Ukiyo woodcut style might have some influence on this, but a quick search of other woodblock prints with trees shows me otherwise:



I also don't attribute this poor imagery to his "deconstructed" style. I just see a large drop in quality between his canvas work and the prints that get released.

An edition of 35 isn't being sold at the gallery. It's already been allocated to their VIP list.

Rule of thumb is you don't go to Pace to buy art, Pace comes to you to sell you art.

Interesting how Pace and Pace Prints are separate companies but still operate in quite similar ways
