A Daring Street Art Escape by Daan Botlek


While poking around a condemned building in Berlin, street artist Daan Botlek (previously) dreamed up the idea of his white shilhouette figures executing a daring escape. The series of pieces here, Escape from Wuhlheide, was the result. (via Lustik)

I have been invited by Urban Nation as part of their educational series to co-curate an international group show together with Olly Walker, which opens this Saturday January 31st at Urban Nation Headquaters in Berlin.

CUT IT OUT! is dedicated to the art of the stencil and features brand new works, equipment, tools and stencils by Above, Adam 5100, Aiko, Alessio-B, Artist Ouvrier, B-Toy, C215, Canvaz, Don John, Eins92, Eelus, EismannArts, Epsylon Point, Fin Dac, Icy & Sot, Jana & Js, Jef Aerosol, Joe Iurato, Kurar, Logan Hicks, M-City, Mobstr, Monkey Bird, Nick Walker, Orticanoodles, Pisa 73, Reko Rennie, Rene Gagnon, Snik, Sten & Lex, Stencil King, Stew, STF, Stinkfish, Tankpetrol and XooooX amongst many – plus new walls and public installations by Jef Aerosol, M-City and surprises!!

We've got brand new works from around 40 artists in total, so there is indeed a lot to see!

Urban Nation’s Project M/7 Honors “Persons of Interest”

We stopped by Urban Nation in Berlin last week to check out their latest project, M/7, in collaboration with Brooklyn Street Art. It is the 7th in a series named after Berlin’s UN haus building, which we’ve been following here over the past several months. A portraiture show in essence, curators Jamie Rojo and Steven P. Harrington invited 12 Brooklyn based street artists to create a portrait of his or her particular “Person of Interest”: Dain, Gaia, Don Rimx, Swoon, Specter, Esteban Del Valle, Chris Stain, Nohcoley, Cake, El Sol 25, Icy & Sot, Onur Dinc, Kkade, Nevercrew, Dot Dot Dot, and Anreas Engludn. This makes the exhibition a sort of cultural exhange program that brings together the artists with local residents of Berlin, and encourages them to consider their surroundings. Their chosen subjects are a range of idols that either offer them inspiration, or represent issues that are important to them. Some of them are active supportors of the project, such as Gaia’s subject, Fereshta Ludin, a central female figure of Berlin’s Dada movement. In another mural, Swoon pays tribute to Turkish immigrants in Berlin, the largest Turkish settlement outside of Turkey. Brooklyn Street Art shares, “Artists actually like to do research and create art that is meaningful and relevant to their personal stories… and many street passersby and art audiences are elated to find work that they can relate to – that reflects their lives, history, and culture.” Take a look at more “Persons of Interest” below, on view through June 22nd, 2015.

Going to Berlin this weekend. Any good recommendations for galleries/places to go for someone who spends to much time on this forum? Have at least all Sunday to wander around.

Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain. Lots of big things and small things to see. There is also a iphone app: Berlin Street Art. Its a nice one, but not much in detail. You can use it as a starting reference.

And in the night, just make a visit to Berghain, if you can get in. Have fun.

Take a free walking tour. A nice tip at the end is expected but they are some of the best guides around. My trip wouldnt of been the same. If ur going from a hostel there will more than likely be a group. Great public transit. The berlin wall galleries ( remaining pieces of wall) are very moving

Just booked a trip during which my better half and I will be spending a week in Copenhagen in mid September followed by 8 days in Berlin. Rented an apartment in Kreuzberg. This thread will most definitely come in handy! Keep those recommendations coming!
