Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by numusic on Oct 24, 2007 23:02:22 GMT 1, I just got back fom Cologne which is Great city. I could have thrown a stone from my balcony at the Cathedral, Awsome building. Lots of graffiti everywhere too, Saw some blu and London Police in a shop called 'vibe'. They had a space Invader show in one of the galleries a couple of months back also which I went too. Also met the pretty one from Herakut. She's German of course and they are both coming to london for xmas. Cologne also seems so safe and everything works too! I love london but it really can be a nightmare, took me longer to get from waterloo to N London than it did to fly from stanstead to Cologne!
Beautiful city, settled there for a year after bouncing around Europe when I was younger. So you met Akut, how is he

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by seba on Oct 24, 2007 23:13:42 GMT 1, I live in Cologne since 3 weeks, but know the city longer than this. It is a nice place, but quite expensive... (well, itΒ΄s actually cheaper than going out in London)
I would recommend Berlin, if you want to see good (street-)art, graffiti, and want to go out to clubs and bars ...and there are some smaller christmas markets.
If you want to spend your time on christmas markets and and then drink good beer, Munich is a good idea. I think here are also huge Christmas markets in Nuremberg and Dresden.

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by jipsy on Oct 25, 2007 7:51:25 GMT 1, Munich - MΓΌnchen
Get to the Christmas market at Marienplatz, it's the dog's balls. There are plenty of bars, cafes and such like all around that area but it's a bit touristy. We had snow here on Sunday so come prepared. From there you must go to the Hoffbrauhaus. Get a mass beer, half a chicken and a bretzen (prtetzel) and you're sorted. The music's traditional and the punters friendly (apart from the odd Ozzie). Check out the ceiling decorations there's a certain symbol that pops up every now and then. If you have women in the party then go to Kaufingerstrasse for shopping, if you're loaded then go to Maximillianstrasse (Louis Vuitton, Gucci and all that). For eating and drinking go to Schwabing, Leopoldstrasse, it's got loads of bars and some good restaurants. The streets parralel have some cool little shops. Use the U bahn and S bahn for getting around, they are very cheap and reliable. Always buy a ticket, it isn't worth the risk to skip it. Buy a card that allows you 10 trips (streifen card). For clubs head to Kunstpark Ost. It's an industrial estate that is given up to bars and clubs, if you tell me which dates you are here then I can see which gigs are on. DO NOT GO TO THE STRIP CLUBS NEAR HAUPTBAHNHOF, cause they're expensive and crap. There are a few legalised brothels (Bordell, Puff) around the town, just ask a taxi driver. For culture head to the Deutches Museum, it's got some great stuff there and some cool art. At the airport go to the AirbrΓ€u, great beer and traditional food (Schweinebraten or Scweinehaxen, ask for Kumulus Weissbeer).
Enjoy

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by danvnuk on Oct 25, 2007 8:12:29 GMT 1, Hey thanks for that Jipsy, very comprehensive +1.
Snow - Cool ;D
For me, as I'll be with the GF - Shopping will be def be on the cards LOL - I like the small individual unusual shops as oppossed to corporate clone stores.
What's Schweinebraten or Scweinehaxen? Schweine is Pork right? Where does the best Brattwurst? I'm definately up for the traditional food.
What would be a best buy at the xmas markets, and what should I avoid?

What would be a best buy at the xmas markets, and what should I avoid? Schweiebraten is like roast pork, Schweinhaxen is a big lump of pork knuckle, it's great. Bratwurst is everywhere but you must try weisswurst (white sausage) with a bretzen a weissbeer and senf (mustard). We have that at breakfast time. To shop then go to Leopoldstrasse and go to the streets parallel to it. Crime is very low in Munich and walking the street at any time is normally fine. My missus and I used to do our best photography at 3 in the morning especially around Christmas time. Can't help you as regards must buys at the markets, my missus loves it and I just get drunk.

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by Imoy-San on Oct 25, 2007 9:22:04 GMT 1, Santacon is an annual event organised by the cacophony society.
Our objective is to enjoy a Xmas without commercialism. People are so stressed out with buying presents, getting cards, and arranging for the day, they forget what it is all about - goodwill and joy to all men.
We rock out, in the name of fun, and f*ckin sh*t up! Santa likes 'likker', Santa likes porn, Santa likes to 'party' and Santa likes 'naughty girls'
We invade a city, spreading joy, it is amazing, you should see the look on people's faces when they see us. I am Badarse Santa Pimp Daddi! I am lead Santa and help organise the event. This year we are expecting over 1000, comprising of Santa, reindeer, elves, angels, Xmas trees, all with a unique spin on the Xmas theme.
It is also a good excuse for a 18 hour pub-crawl.

Respect. If you do come to Munich then stay on the good side of the local police. Munich has a reputation as having the toughest no nonsence police force in Germany, oh and they've got guns.

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by gozgoz on Oct 25, 2007 9:43:09 GMT 1, I live in Cologne since 3 weeks, but know the city longer than this. It is a nice place, but quite expensive... (well, itΒ΄s actually cheaper than going out in London) I would recommend Berlin, if you want to see good (street-)art, graffiti, and want to go out to clubs and bars ...and there are some smaller christmas markets. If you want to spend your time on christmas markets and and then drink good beer, Munich is a good idea. I think here are also huge Christmas markets in Nuremberg and Dresden.
Any good chrsitmass markets to recommend in berlin? I heard its a lot of small markets and not huge ones like in nurembourg

I went to Berlin last year - think there are around 30 odd Christmas markets - the best two I went to in my opinion were the one in the Gendarmenmarkt the one at the Opernplatz (or may have been the one opposite the Berliner Dom - I can't remember) LOL They all seem fairly close to one another, and it's only worth going to them at night I'd say - they seem really christmasy then.

Visit BERLIN π©πͺ Germany Street Art, Galleries, Events , by benya on Jan 15, 2008 14:40:07 GMT 1, I was there a couple of years ago and stumbled across a great place that seemed central.
It was an abandoned building about 6 stories high that had a bar on the top floor - as you made your way up there were artist studios tucked away in the various rooms selling their own work. The whole place was covered in graf and as I remember there was a big outdoor drinking area out the back that was made out to be a beach??
I was rather smashed so sorry about the scetchy details - was great though so maybe someone else knows of it???

The place with a bus half buried nose down in the ground? Just walked past it ten minutes ago on the way home.
It's called "Tacheles" and is an artist's commune/squat. As you probably can't remember how you got there you should get the U-Bahn (U6 line) and get off at Oranienburger Tor. ;D

It was located near the place i lived called Sunflower Hostel (http://www.sunflower-hostel.de/) or Warschauer str. subway station (http://www.sunflower-hostel.de/en/print.html).
You should see it from the bridge.
Good luck.
Peace.
