Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by kfroms on Dec 11, 2018 14:16:37 GMT 1, I loved the colourful ones ( which I missed out on ), those blue ones are a bit to....blue for me. Overall a big fan of MC though - I have his 'f*ck off' on the wall in the guest toilet which is the most commented piece on my walls....

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by Deleted on Dec 11, 2018 19:34:26 GMT 1, In case people are unaware, I can recommend a small exhibition of Martin Creed's work in Tate Britain at the moment. I particularly like this "Don't Worry" piece.
www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/creed-work-no-890-dont-worry-ar01149
The phrase โDONโT WORRYโ is ambiguous in that it is apparently reassuring yet implies that there is something to be anxious about. Critic Michael Archer has written about this ambiguity in relation to the way in which the text is spread across two walls:
This arrangement has the effect of splitting the text in half so that instead of striking one as a single platitude it appears to be two separate commands. First comes a prohibition: whatever it is you are doing, donโt do it anymore. Secondly there is an order to become anxious and concerned. The disconcertingly conflicting implications of the text are heightened by the lurid, intense yellow of the neon.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 21, 2018 18:13:36 GMT 1, if the image is naff (something I wouldn't disagree with), then how is it a bargain, the prestige of the artist?
surely it becomes just a (circle jerk) cycle then, that people think whatever the person does is great simply because they've reached prestige status.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by Deleted on Dec 21, 2018 18:19:47 GMT 1, You can dislike the image and still think 100 pounds for a signed limited edition print by a highly regarded artist is cheap, can't you?
I'd love to own a print by Martin Creed, but I won't be buying this one.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 21, 2018 18:41:43 GMT 1, I know he is highly regarded by people, and Martin Creed seems like a really nice and funny guy. But I don't highly regard a lot of the artwork he produces, presenting us with the philosophical process of categorisation. You can see why he's a darling of the art establishment elites. So I'm not sure how I feel about it entirely. I enjoy how he appears to mock the art world .. that I like. But I don't want to be one of the ones he's laughing at by selling me a screwed up ball of paper or a broccoli print.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by chuckle on Dec 22, 2018 8:46:43 GMT 1, If you are sitting on the fence, time to make up your mind as there are only a couple left. Mine arrived yesterday, it is a nice little print. Ticks off a Martin Creed shaped hole in the collection, particularly as it references a couple of key themes from his work, and doesnโt cost 4 figures!

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 10:36:14 GMT 1, the Western system of classification with its roots in Ancient Greece was widely used by Colonial powers as evidence of their innate superiority and consequently used as excuse to 'educate' other 'less advanced' cultures around the world, often with devastating brutality and cruelty. It might be more than mere coincidence that the old guard of the establishment hold in such high esteem artists who celebrate such ideas, even if the artist is unaware or shares no part in the abuse of such power.

He is one of those artists that it is easy to mock. I guess it all depends on how one looks at things. Creed is a conceptual artist. It's more about the thought behind the art rather than the aesthetics of art itself - and he seems to have a lot of thoughts. I quite like that. In an age of instagram and instant gratification, I rather like art that you don't get an instant hit within 2 seconds of looking at it. I think there's a lot to be said for what I call 'slow art'.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 11:40:11 GMT 1, Was I mocking him ... um I don't think so. I'm trying get across a suggestion as to why he is so highly regarded by the art establishment. As to why the basis of his general concepts have been so embraced by them. I don't think I've really gone much into the aesthetics as it's the ideas themselves I am concerned with. If you take the trouble to read the post after the one which you quoted @markiemark you may have a better idea what I'm talking about. Not all ideas are 'beautiful' Gentle Mental what happens when you take forms of classification to extremes, when you begin to classify human beings and claiming it a science. Let's not be too quick to forget our collective histories and how much of Western wealth was once attained. Did those in power ever let go of it, or a continuation with a redressed narrative. Dig a little and you can sometimes find ideas beneath ideas.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by Deleted on Dec 22, 2018 11:54:29 GMT 1, First of all, let me say I know you wasn't mocking Creed. I never said you were. All I was saying is that if one doesn't like conceptual art (and loads of people don't) then it is easy to mock the guy. I'm not sure why you are suddenly talking about "our collective histories". Of course we (as in the Western world) uphold classical Greece and it's artistic achievements and, in my opinion, quite rightly so. But I don't see Martin Creed particularly following that tradition. In fact he is probably one of the least influenced by the Western Classical tradition out of all the artists discussed on these forums.

Martin Creed ๐ฌ๐ง Turner Prize Winner, by Gurn on Dec 22, 2018 12:20:22 GMT 1, This was an easy purchase for me. I was blown away by his room at Tate Britain last week. The print gives a nod to other works and is of a size I am looking for; plus all unique. I bet it'll look great on my 'music' wall once framed.
