Friendly Fire Exhibition, by bobbymeachamjr on Aug 19, 2007 17:11:01 GMT 1, I've repeatedly have said that people here should get a few copies of PRINT magazine / THE NATION magazine. With these 2 zines you can see the best in global graphic design and hard hitting political art. Political art has historically been free and many of the themes used in the UK street scene are nothing new - some are pretty much ripoffs of old/cliche themes from these anonymous artists.

And pretty much all political graphic design feeds off art of the past. It's a vicious circle hey If we were looking for originality, I doubt we'd be collecting political art, there's gotta be a limit to how many "graphic" ways we can say "war is bad", but one look at Banksy's "Flags" and bam ! we're back on track with a truly original voice.

Friendly Fire Exhibition, by bobbymeachamjr on Aug 19, 2007 19:16:38 GMT 1, I think theres a line between interpretation and/or inspiration from other art or artists. When I start a new design project (albeit a commercial one) I do a bit or research by going through the archives. However, when you see pieces like mantis' "evolution" and a lot of the obey giant stuff its more like plagiarism. Aside from this street scene the graphic design field have always been meticulous about noting credits.
I think theres a lot of people in this scene (esp. the buyers) who just are not too experienced in their design and/or art history - and when some of these "street" artists come out with imagery it might seem to be "wow what a great idea/image!". Even though its pretty much a copy of something somebody has done to much less fanfare...

Oh I agree, knowledge is power if you're looking for "fine art" that will stand the test off time. But it's ok to also just buy for now cos you like it. I've seen hundreds of plays on the "Evolution" image, a shoe shop used it where the last guy was wearing a pair of shoes ! You need to have more than a few one liners to get a paragraph in art history. But I think the graphic/illustration/fine art boundaries have been shattered and it will now stay that way. The derivative one liners are fine for what they are, but you better have a lot of them if you're gonna stay the course.

Friendly Fire Exhibition, by speebe on Aug 19, 2007 21:18:21 GMT 1, I think you'll find that Barnbrook WAS there first. Thanks for that, i assumed as much.
As i said earlier... ''When i saw the show I couldn't quite believe how many of his designs could have been deemed as beeing plagerised by Insect, Beejoir, Mantis etc '' Some are really close to the bone there.
I wanted to pick up his new book but funds were tight... Always admired his work since seeing the pieces produced with Hirst for the Pharmacy.

Friendly Fire Exhibition, by Gentle Mental on Aug 19, 2007 22:28:52 GMT 1, wow AMERICA has a far more imaginative/better arrangement than PEACE. but mantis's evolution is funnier. IMO. we've seen better ronnie macs. no?
rules don't matter much here, it's the strongest image that wins, i think.
