Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by milo99 on Apr 20, 2017 19:42:07 GMT 1, Well that killed it 😂😂 I started the thread as I do genuinely find it shocking some big names are still really affordable given their history and contribution to urban art but I can see how it's easy to be biased and have post lean towards the "I would like my prints to blow up" content. Has been interesting reading people's for and against etc and has had me googling the odd person and discovering their work so not a total fail 😂
Hopefully it will help you find some nice art, and cheap 😊

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Deleted on Apr 20, 2017 19:47:07 GMT 1, I do not think he has been mentioned yet but what about Sweettoof, large originals still under my £5000 limit with small originals starting at a couple of hundred pounds. Not bad for a piece by an artist who was fundamental in the Bristol street art movement.
P.S I only own a linocut which I absolutely love, wish I had bought a few other pieces when they were more readily available.

Totally agree , i think that goes to quite a few artists

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by medichead on Apr 20, 2017 20:15:24 GMT 1, Great thread, to add my slightly off piste comment, will be interested to see which direction Miller goes? Certainly huge potential, but would like to see 'post penguin books', and where that goes.
Are you saying huge potential for his work to go up in value? He already has prints that cost £9.6k on launch - how much bigger can you get? In terms of future print releases I think we could probably expect more of those Blain Southern '70s textbook covers' for the near future - but that's just me guessing!

I have heard however that Cliff Phillips's painting's are way under valued and will be blowing up any minute now
All the best

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by preston on Apr 20, 2017 22:32:09 GMT 1, I'm not sure that we can assume that anyone else on the scene currently IS likely to 'blow up' in the same way that Invader has. In my personal opinion, and saying this breaks my heart (wallet) as I have items from most of the artists listed above, most of them have effectively blown their chance, either through repetitive work, poor management or poor choices in the form of over-saturating the market, etc. The one that I genuinely thought would make it was Faile, as they built up a small but enthused fan base with low edition prints and one offs, but they produce so many prints now that picking one up slightly above cost is very easy to do.
Invader prices seem to have gone through the roof primarily through a pronounced dearth of recent product to buy. Other artists could of course follow this method, but it does rely on there being a base level of popularity to give a shit when supply does dry up. Personal liking/preference for a certain artist means relatively little if you're one of only 100 people to care.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by mla on Apr 20, 2017 22:47:28 GMT 1, I don't think you can cite "repetitive work" as an issue and then reference Invader as being the prime example of how to go about things as an artist. The increase in value of his work does not seem organic at all. It was almost an overnight bump of 3-4x in pricing. Much of what is being bought up now at these elevated prices are by those doing so out of fear and by those in the business of speculation. Ultimately, it will be interesting to see where it all goes.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Howard Johnson on Apr 20, 2017 22:51:23 GMT 1, My opinion is that the Invader blow up can be directly linked to his Asian presence. For the past couple years he's targeted that market aggressively, and its paid off in spades. Kaws did the same thing early on, and it skyrocketed his market before a lot of the other artists mentioned here. The Asian art market is growing very quickly, and I think that Invader and Kaws have been able to successfully ride that train to financial success (it also doesn't hurt that their images are tangentially related to Asian culture). Beyond China and Japan, I think the middle east will be the next big market for US artworks. So in terms of the "next big thing" I'd look to artists that are pushing for appeal beyond the US/EU.

Not thought of this before. Good point. Perhaps why Hong Kong shows are becoming a prominent feature for artists now. I.e. Pure evil etc in recent times

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by John The Badgers on Apr 21, 2017 10:13:28 GMT 1, Great thread, to add my slightly off piste comment, will be interested to see which direction Miller goes? Certainly huge potential, but would like to see 'post penguin books', and where that goes. Are you saying huge potential for his work to go up in value? He already has prints that cost £9.6k on launch - how much bigger can you get? In terms of future print releases I think we could probably expect more of those Blain Southern '70s textbook covers' for the near future - but that's just me guessing! I am just interested in which direction he goes art wise, nothing to do with the value of his work. Although I have certainly enjoyed the Penguin Books based works, just interested to see where the fella goes next.

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Deleted on Apr 21, 2017 11:34:54 GMT 1, I keep changing my mind on this. Artists change their styles and followers with it, and some are producing print every 5 minutes and dragging out styles or copying older works of others. Used to like Nick Walker but fed up of his vandal image. Pure Evil had enough of the dripping eyes. Eine - How many fonts are there and too many releases imho. Dolk - Lost me at the grey blocks. Eelus - Like some not others, waiting to see his direction. Harlan Miller - repetitive RYCA - no more star wars or smileys. Like the way he experiments with mediums though. If you took the financial gain prospects from half the artists I would be surprised if they sold out.
I like some of pose' works but prefer Tristan Eaton ROA Phlegm

Artists who should of BLOWN UP ..... But haven't. , by Jimmy Oscar on Apr 21, 2017 12:42:51 GMT 1, The Invader blow up is down to one thing and one thing only.
Certain galleries have been buying up private stock over the past 12 months as part of a deliberate strategy of pumping up his prices.
They have achieved this - and now of course nobody in the private world wants to 'miss' out and are now paying vastly inflated prices.
That's why there are suddenly 5x more invaders being sold on here than ever before. They're being dumped by owners who can't believe their luck.
A kit being sold for circa 4K is evidence of that.
