Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by disappointed on Nov 14, 2016 15:09:32 GMT 1, Whatson's style is a stereotype of "urban art" but it is very effective : his pieces are home friendly and can be hang easily, especially on the Chevrier collab which is well executed. I read that a lot, not just about Whatson of course, and still cannot think of a less valid reason for the purchase of an artwork.

Do you mean that you purchase art without thinking how you will display it and how it will looks on your wall ? It makes perfect sense to me that people are more attracted to wall friendly art.

I said being 'home friendly' and 'easy to hang' are so far down the list of what makes art interesting that they are not something I would ever consider. Home/wall friendly, as commonly used, is little more than a euphemism for non-challenging, decorative, and bland and I'd rather have a blank wall than something that met those conditions.

We agree, but i think that most people prefer art when it is non-challenging and decorative. Whatson art is easy, no over thinking, no hidden message, no mad painting skills but appealing to the eye, cheerful, matching with any room with any furniture, etc... I would call it "art for everyone" and to me, it is like blockbusters and arthouse cinema, i mainly watch auteur cinema but sometimes a blockbuster feel good. Whatson is my blockbuster.

Not starting an argument here but I am confused as to your point. Do you really think or believe this? Do you not own or appreciate art unless it is difficult to look at or contrasts with its surroundings?
Some of the most respected artists represented on this board put out or have put out plenty of "wall friendly" art. I say this as I am staring at Dazzle and Nola which happen to look great with my decor ;-)

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by John The Badgers on Nov 14, 2016 20:23:44 GMT 1, Interesting to read the debate on here, good to hear peoples opinions. I'm definitely in the Whatson appreciation club.
That said, always makes me chuckle, but my first Whatson print, Climber, was my pride and joy, and my first real purchase on release. My elderly neighbour called round, on seeing aforementioned in the box seat on the wall said 'Ooooh, that's nice, did you do it yourself???'.
Wounded.

I didn't realize that they're all handpainted and unique. I like this version much better. I wonder if all 150 will be pictured on the order page or will it be an act of faith..

That's usually the time that I rehang work in my home and switch things out.
I do, however, love that art is entirely meant to be cherished by some and discounted by others. Taste level, concept, technique, aesthetic, etc are all variables that are at play when deciding if something is "good" or "bad." Even the artists history or the work being wall friendly.

Some of the most respected artists represented on this board put out or have put out plenty of "wall friendly" art. I say this as I am staring at Dazzle and Nola which happen to look great with my decor ;-) I wouldn't worry about starting an argument but I am always up for discussion as it seems lacking on this forum so here goes...
Who said art had to be difficult to look at or contrast with it's surroundings? I said that I consider being 'wall friendly' an insignificant justification for buying/hanging an artwork and, yes, if that was all that could be found to recommend a piece then I'd sooner look at the wall. Same for buying art to match your surroundings, a notion which is way too Habitat/IKEA for me. I'm not looking to decorate my walls in a manner that might satisfy an interior, or set, designer but rather with artwork that has the ability to engage me, and others, on a daily basis. Being provocative does not necessarily mean being difficult.
Other than maybe one or two pieces I don't own too much art that I would consider genuinely difficult/threatening to look at but I do have plenty of art that I can look at every single day, seeing some new aspect each and every time, and which has enough interest to be experienced and enjoyed every day of the week - this is the sort of challenge I refer to. That engagement may be the subject, the technique, the artist's motivation and/or history, whatever, but there needs to be a hook and that hook is never that it is 'wall friendly'. That is a description that, for me, remains a derogatory term - I can walk past such art as easily as I can tune out 'radio friendly' music and that is not really a positive. I am more offended by the reams of artwork that appear to be designed by committee in order to maximise sales than by any artwork which might have some genuine justification to be described as offensive.
Sorry, I have no idea what Dazzle is but do not consider NOLA a great piece of indoor work, whether it satisfies your interior decor matchmaking or not, so those are probably not the greatest examples.
