What was your first ever Art Purchase?

So it says... "Rain" St. Petersburg, S.I. Yanuschenko. The last part being the artist's name. I'll have to see if I can dig anything up on him (or her) when I get a chance.

My first ever art buy some 25 years ago was this.....





Its by William Wylie and is staggering in its detail, i saw it in a house years before and was amazed how someone could draw such a thing, i never forgot it and a friend who must have heard me mention it saw it in a gallery in Putney, i had to buy it, was totally skint at the time but just managed to afford it. I suppose its much more relevant if you live in London. I went on to buy lots of Wylie etchings from his Thames Tidal series from the 1870's, they are also amazing in their detail. While i was at an auction at Bonhams i picked up a prints catalogue and thats when the addiction really started....my first urban art piece....this.....



Still buy the odd piece, but have slowed down a bit now as i have just about run out of wall space!. I still go to lots of shows and read a fair bit so the interest is still verges on obsession

Probably not many people have ever heard of my first artwork. It was quite an expensive purchase in those days for me at 4.000 guilders. I had to chose between going on vacation or buying this original painting. This was in 1994 !

Test Pilot Blues - by Dutch legend Herman Brood.

Still own it today, but recently moved to the attic due to the purchase of....well..... you can probably guess.

Fantastic Piece! You'd be surprised how many people know about it. Black Francis (Pixies, Frank Black & The Catholics) wrote a song about it for his album "Bluefinger", a theme album about Herman Brood.



Damn...I forgot how much I loved that album.

Wow - that's great. Never knew about that. Very cool this song is named after my painting !!
Herman Brood was an awesome guy - musician and artist.

Good thread! Interesting to read all your stories. The very first painting I acquired was from Sandra Chevrier, before she started on the cages series. I remember the excitement when I first saw it, the surprising feeling that I needed to have it and the rush of adrenaline when buying it. Needless to say it was the beginning of a new passion! Four years later, I own more than 40 pieces by artists from around the world and I don't think I'm about to stop!

Back to topic: I remember I bought my first "art work" at a chabby and cheap pop up gallery on a holiday in  Barcelona, by an unknown artist, never heard of since, under the influence of a few pina coladas, dreaming it might just be the new Picasso The "devastating" confirmation years later by my self that he for sure wasn`t the new Picasso stopped the art buy for a while, until I come across some outside Dolk works visiting my grandmother in Bergen. That brought me in to the fantastic world of street/urban art. I searched for pictures and read all I could find about Dolk and other street artists for several years before I actually went to the step and not only bought my first piece, but bought my two first pieces at the same day! It ended up with Theft from DotDotDot and A Woman of a Thousand faces by Sandra Chevrier, and the snowball has rolled ever since!

I've been traveling all over the for last 5 years and always be amazed to discover the street pieces and manage to meet local artists wherever I am. In 2013, I was in Indonesia after spending 14 month in Australia and I've send a group message to a couple of artists I really enjoyed talking with and with good talent.
I bought a piece from each of them and they managed to send all in the same package.

So it was
Blue art Xinja, a copie of the very very first street piece I've seen in Brisbane;
Cherie Strong who got amazing drawing skills;
Awen, sadly past away last year
Barek, an incredibly nice guy
PhilB, obsessed with Vikings who pushed me at that time to passed up stuff on streets as well.

I would like to send a pictures of those artworks but I'm still traveling and everything I buy is sent straight to my parents house back home and this package is still unopened.

Wondering what everyone's first ever purchase was? What gave people the bug?

My first was Cept - Again and Again. The piece it was based off was round the corner from my flat in London and on my daily commute. Plus a big Joy Division fan. Bought it on a whim. Have been hooked ever since.

One day, a guy came into the shop where I worked and said he was a Buddhist monk and he needed to sell all of his possessions so he could go and live in a temple in Wales.

He had a huge suitcase full of comic books, art books, some prints, postcards, etc.

I bought some.

I think the last I heard, he was living alone in the temple in Wales. It was originally him and the head monk, but he apparently went to Thailand and never came back.

I always felt bad about how little I paid for his stuff.

About 4/5 years ago I remember making the 3 hour journey from Bristol to Brighton with a pocket full of cash.To purchase my first Banksy which had no Coa but had a hand written receipt and a promise from the owner it was real.I remember driving home thinking what have I done,I've just handed over all that cash for something that may or may not be a "Banksy".But luckily it was ok and it still makes me smile everytime I look at it.

I bought a limited print from a german "zero movement" artist.
