Visit DUBAI π¦πͺ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by settingson on Mar 29, 2016 20:19:24 GMT 1, Was unfortunately back from a Dubai just before all this kicked off! Seeing as Eelus has posted up his new piece and Dubai was getting mentioned I thought it deserved it's own thread. There was also a Shok 1 piece appear not too long ago. Obviously all done with permission so your decision how 'street' it is.

Some of it looks pretty good, though: this lenticular mural is bang on-trend:

If someone paid me to paint on a wall I would call it a mural. If I painted on a wall without permission, I would call it graffiti.

Am I wrong or do they have a terrible human rights issue going on there!? Plus Environmental impacts of that city Shouldn't they be putting up anti Dubai slogans?
Who needs a ski slope in the desert!?
Nick walker's 'I Love Dubai' piece.. Seriously!!!! plus the Eelus street piece.. !? Etc... Really?!

I feel the same to be honest, I was very disappointed to see one of my favourites Etam Cru there. Having been there and seeing migrant workers raking through the bins of houses with a couple of super cars in the drive pretty much summed up what the place is about for me. Not a fan at all.

I think it's up to the individual artist to decide and then not be hypocritical about issues. Ron English is anti Trump with his Trump Change etc Humpty Trumpy built a great wall, yet seems to ignore the way rich gulf states immigration and foreign workers policies and in regard to accepting asylum seekers.
I'm sure these artists made plenty of money and hope to gain wealthy buyers for their art and in reality street urban art of this type is not urban it's just exterior decorating.
Personally i'm no fan of any mysoginist ideology.

Honestly guys, you should come & see what is happening over there before giving lessons on "human rights", "migrant workers" & "environmental impact".
Just to clarify once for all: Dubai is not Saudi Arabia, not Qatar, not Iran...
I would have expected better than simple shortcuts coming from people on this Forum.

If I got caught illegally painting graffiti in Dubai, just out of interest, what would the penalty be, jail time or fine? Interested to know.
Its vomit though isn't it 'I love Dubai' couldn't be any more sell out than this.

Edit: I am not, in any ways, defending the quality of the work done by the artist for this projects. I am also not a big fan of many artworks done by artists I usually like. Dubai should not be blamed for trying to embellished its walls. The "business" part of it is up to each artist decision.

What would happen if painting illegally in an area like Chelsea or Westminster? Dubai is pretty comparable, albeit with much newer buildings. I suspect if you sprayed something on Harrod's it would be a fine at least. As to Dubai's human rights, and as ane states it's not as bad as some in the region and they do acknowledge further progress is needed.
Personally, I think Dubai is a model for the region as they respect local religious considerations yet have westernised on their own terms. If you want to complain about Dubai, start with the transport. The roads are dangerous and terribly designed and it always seems like rush hour on the metro. They decided as well to build a tram line that seemingly goes to nowhere. Sorting out that mess should be top of Sheik Mo's priorities.

Visit DUBAI π¦πͺ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by ANE* on Apr 4, 2016 8:22:27 GMT 1, The problem with Dubai is that they invest billions in infrastructures but when the day of delivery of the projects comes, the population grew so much that another increase in capacity is needed. The urbanization team is living a real nightmare to keep up with the dynamism of the city...
As for the roads, busy during peak hours but not dangerous at all by itself. People driving on it are because of their origins. Imagine Local Arabs, Indians & Westerners on the same roads, at the same time, with their respective driving style...
PS: I have been living in Dubai for the past 4 years so that is my daily routine.
Also, other facts for those that do not now much about Dubai:
-> Yes, you can drink alcohol. -> Yes, you can go to church. -> Yes, you can buy pork at the supermarket. -> No, girls do not need to were any veil. -> Etc....

Being a frequent visitor to Dubai, UAE over the last 10 years (must have gone at least 20 times). IMO the roads are horrendous and very dangerous. A quick wiki search confirms that the UAE road fatalities (not Dubai I grant you) are over x5 more dangerous than UK roads.

Visit DUBAI π¦πͺ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by ANE* on Apr 4, 2016 8:43:46 GMT 1, As I was previously saying, roads are not dangerous by itself (highways in some European countries are worst than that) but people drive like dumb & are totally unaware of the risks.
Some UAE "driving issues":
-> Tailgating at 120-140km/h (although hundreds of radar have been implemented to fix this behavior). -> Driving +160-180 km/h on empty straight lines. -> Overpassing a high speed on the left or right side depending on which one is free to go...
