Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by Coach on Jan 25, 2016 11:42:43 GMT 1, Meh? Really? That bad? Obviously if that's your opinion, then fair enough my friend. But I think it's so much better than that. That's art for you I guess. I am with you on this one Coach. Its well executed, a strong image well chosen with an equally strong message. The placement is relevant and brave and it has brought needed attention to the issue.
On the PR from Jo maybe he wanted to get the important message he was drawing attention to in the public domain quicker rather than him or her wanting to promote his work. It is a current and live issue. Maybe I am being naïve but I am surprised at some of the cynical views. I am not sure he needs the publicity.
I think the piece is very well executed. The quality of the stencil is very good. I think it does lack his usual humour. It's not weaker for that in my opinion. The audacity of the placement (central London next to an embassy with heavy CCTV and on a very busy road) makes it even stronger in my eyes. And it's brought to our attention and got people debating the police attack on the camp, something I wasn't aware of. I don't think it got much attention in the press. It will now. Asking for more is asking too much.

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by Harveyn on Jan 25, 2016 11:53:01 GMT 1, I am not sure his work should be impartial if indeed that is what is being implied. Of course there are two sides and even a fence that you can sit on. Whether you agree with the point he is making or not I think he should and always has made fairly definitive statements on his point of view.
For those whose views differ then the upside is the work creates the opportunity for people to discuss and challenge.
All good in my eyes.

In my view, these issues are a bit too complex to summarize in a single stencil, even if the author is the most talented one...

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by kaos on Jan 25, 2016 12:58:24 GMT 1, Just been to Knightsbridge to see this piece, very emotional piece. The press is out in force as are the ... what can I call them .... with deep pockets. They covered it while I was there with a piece of hardboard and then something happened, someone said something and the hardboard was removed. Lots of photos which I will put up when I work out how to do so. Get down and see it before the thieves take it away.

I really like the piece and it's a great location. Pretty bummed that they are removing it, the piece is pointless without the canister and smoke.

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by Coach on Jan 25, 2016 13:48:14 GMT 1, BBC:-
A new Banksy artwork criticising the use of teargas on refugees in the Calais "Jungle" camp has appeared on a building opposite the French Embassy. The mural, in Knightsbridge, is based on the poster for musical Les Miserables and shows a young girl with tears in her eyes as a can of CS gas lies beneath her. French authorities have been using bulldozers to clear the camp. Banksy has created several works inspired by the refugee crisis. The picture of the girl, sprayed on the corner of a large complex, includes an interactive QR code. 'Important message' When scanned with a mobile phone, it links to a video which appears to show teargas and rubber bullets being used during a raid at the camp on 5 January. Fans have been visiting the area to look at the elusive street artist's latest creation. Charity worker Nick Papavassiliou said he hoped "it will raise awareness of conditions in the camp". The mural was boarded up for a brief time earlier but the boards were removed shortly afterwards. Attempts have also been made to remove the piece causing damage to the sides of the artwork. Parts of the artist's Dismaland theme park, which was temporarily based in Weston-super-Mare last summer, were sent to the camp to be used as shelters. The French government has promised to keep law and order during efforts to relocate the controversial "Jungle" settlement. Interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 25 people were arrested on Saturday after migrants attempted to board a UK-bound ferry.

The French government has promised to keep law and order during efforts to relocate the controversial "Jungle" settlement. Interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 25 people were arrested on Saturday after migrants attempted to board a UK-bound ferry. interesting to see how the british press is describing the situation. According to a local newspaper (from Calais), what the government has decided is to clear an area of 100m between the tents and the main road, not the "jungle" as a whole. This is where they are using the bulldozer, to avoid new constructions, and where the incidents on 5 January took place. This is the area where incidents happen as people try to board trucks before they enter the tunnel on this track. I don't mean to say that what the French government is doing is great, or deny the abuses and brutality by French police, but I think it is misleading to announce that "French authorities have been using bulldozers to clear the camp" without providing more details on what has been decided exactly. They have also started to build a camp to receive 1500 migrants and it should be done quite soon. No mention of that neither.
As mentioned several time, this is a complex situation, with different issues: police abuses and brutality (which have to be addressed and if proven, prosecuted), humanitarian situation for migrants who want to travel to the UK (France has enough money to provide shelter), legal and humanitarian situation for those who have or want to apply for asylum (same, they need shelter and support while their demand are looked at). Mixing all this to raise awareness is not the best strategy in my view...

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by Lroy on Jan 25, 2016 14:45:23 GMT 1, Where's the goddamn perspex?! lol , you are like some Banksy guardians , criticising Calais ' mayor and citizens to take too much time to put Perspex, then to say that the stencils was for migrants ( they could put it in Dover or in England so ?! ) , etc etc .. Easy. Easy shortcuts. And childish attitude. What is the most important here? Artwork or message ? If it s the message , it's have been already done ( Jo Brooks Tweeting dozen of times ) , Newspapers and media talking of police brutality ( all police are brutal , lol ! ) , forgetting to mention that there is a new camp with caravans made for the migrants ( is there is still families in the jungle ? ) , etc etc .. So, we should don't care about the artwork ? Or will you prefer to see it in auctions ?! I don't understand why Banksy - and others - does not attack UK government, with their iron hand ?! Maybe because, only some per cent of English people would like or accept these migrants over The Channel. Four.
I am nothing, officially and unofficially , but I try ...

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by 11 on Jan 25, 2016 14:45:22 GMT 1, I think he has sacrificed the safety of the piece for the sake of the location - I'm sure this was planned and he had been down to find the most prominent place that would be visible to the public and the embassy.
I was massively surprised at how little attention the work got last night but then I guess most weren't convinced until it appeared in his site.
It isn't just a case of removing the board - it has been glued over the top of an existing board so to remove you would have to be cut out.
From the pictures above it looks like there have been further attempts overnight to get it off as the side of the panel has been ripped apart but I'm chuffed I had all the time in the world with her last night - and even some moments alone - just me and her

Hi Roy Hope all is good with you. Just on one point you have made, Banksy has been critical of the UK too, in the past. The child sowing the bunting for the jubilee; all his pieces about our over use of CCTV, are just two examples I can think of off the top of my head.

Just because someone says they hope the piece doesn't get destroyed, doesn't mean they don't care about the political issues as well.
But if you want an informed and detailed debate on the migrant crisis, a street art forum is probably not the best place. Most of us can only give opinion based on what we've seen on TV or read in the papers... not many have actually been there.

I hope you are well.
You make some interesting points. And your recent use of "I am nothing, officially and unofficially , but I try..." on some of your comments has reminded me that it's worth taking a step back now and then, acknowledging that while Banksy (and other artists) can contribute to or comment on society and its woes, he does not have the final say. Nor do we. There are no definitive solutions or answers. You just try your best. Don't try to harm others and leave the world in a better state than you found it. Basically, don't be a dick in life (and I don't mean you personally Roy. I'm speaking generally). If we all try our best not to be dicks or screw anyone else over for our own benefit, than I personally believe life would be a lot nicer.
But this is just my opinion. I don't have the last word or all the answers. People can communicate and express themselves in many ways. Banksy is capable of putting messages on walls. He has a talent for it. Many of us will come on here and express our opinions on matters. Or use other social media. Or chat down the pub to our friends. Banksy is not the messiah. He is not a politician (that I know of?). He's a street artist. We won't always agree with his opinion, but while he's prepared to take the risk to put his message out there, it's his right to express himself. Any one of us could do the same if we wanted to.
There's no magic. Just paint and the will to express (and dodge the law).
I don't think it's fair to hold his efforts to such high scrutiny. When you consider what he does and how he does it, you have to agree that there are very few others that do what he does. You don't have to agree with him, but if it gets people talking, I think that's quite an achievement. He's not perfect (sorry Banksy) and he never will be. This is a person(s) with their own thoughts trying to express themselves. We get our say, he has his. As long as we share our ideas and thoughts, I think we can muddle our way to some solutions or better understanding of others.
Or if people just want to buy s**t, then please yourself.
And also, I'm vegan. That has nothing to do with this topic, but as a vegan I have to tell someone every 15 minutes.
Where's the goddamn perspex?! lol , you are like some Banksy guardians , criticising Calais ' mayor and citizens to take too much time to put Perspex, then to say that the stencils was for migrants ( they could put it in Dover or in England so ?! ) , etc etc .. Bonjour young Roy. Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by 11 on Jan 25, 2016 16:32:56 GMT 1, let's hope it stays the night at least if someone wants to re-post this on their instagram as theirs at least credit me or the forum at least and not delete my comment when challenged. just bad manners. i made the effort to go out and take this. People have no shame and think they can take it regardless, why they cant have the basic courtesy to at least credit the original photographer is beyond me - someone even submitted one of my pics to the Banksy Pictures of Walls site - I would watermark all mine if there was a simple app that could just go through and apply to all but you have to edit each individual photo so tend not to bother
But seriously, if people are that impressed by a photo that they would like to use it the least they can do is say Thank you - seems those that do this are only interested in gaining likes / followers / pokes and will do anything they can to get it

I don't understand these kind of things.
I am sure you are both right, but i have not credited the image on my avatar to anyone. Am I wrong in not doing so? I saw it and like the image, so used it, what should i have done, or what should i do?

I'm with you Bren. I post pics on here that I find on the internet because I think people might be interested. Eg artists you might not know thread. I tend to think that the majority of artists wouldnt mind as I'm sharing their work in a positive way. Look at this, it's fab - would be odd for someone to say how dare you use my picture like that! But occasionally I post other pics on here that I see without permission. It worries me sometimes. I guess I can always take it down and apologise profusely.

Banksy Street Art • Les Miserables, by 11 on Jan 25, 2016 17:46:51 GMT 1, Haha - it wasn't a dig at anyone on here - we all share our photos and am always happy if someone wants to use them - when I'm asked beforehand than i don't even expect a credit - it was in reference to the wider social media tramps that raid our albums on flickr, instagram etc for pictures just cos they look nice or it makes them look cool by pretending they are their own
