Drolleries, by Coach on Jan 2, 2016 16:29:32 GMT 1, As it's quite quiet on here, I thought I might amuse myself, and maybe one or two others, with some drolleries. As some of you will know I have an interest in illuminated medieval manuscripts. I thought I might share a little of that interest with you. Yes, I appreciate that this is about as far from urban art as one can get, so if the FG's want to move this, so be it. Drolleries are small figures, often part human and part animal, drawn or painted in the margin of medieval books. Most are Books of Hours, religious texts for the wealthy layman. What I like about these is the humour, often quite base.

That's kind thank you Roy Many years ago I was visiting the north of France and stumbled accross a fabulous exhibition of medieval manuscripts in a small town. I was in my element!

I have to say, I think modern books would be great of they had little pictures of chaps having a shit, in the margins.

Salvador Dali was influenced by the folleries and had a few old manuscripts himself.
Were they always done by religious monks?
The folleries look to me like a way of saying how religion is in reality shitting on people.
