Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Dr Plip on Mar 25, 2015 22:44:21 GMT 1, So if Martha Cooper can't use Banksy's image as part of her photographic print of a man on a couch, is it ok for Banksy to use Keith Haring's dog on his prints?
Is there a street art lawyer in the house?

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by randomname on Mar 25, 2015 22:56:05 GMT 1, So is the argument here that photography isn't a form of art?
Not at all. My opinion is that this particular photograph didn't add anything to Banksy's piece. If anything, I think it dumbs it down.
Through most of her career, there was a novelty to treating graffiti (which was considered urban decay by most) as fine art. That's not really the case when you're staging a photo shoot in front of a Banksy.
Anyway, I think if you like a piece simply because you like it, you should buy it. If you only like it because of who did it, I would probably pass.

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Dibbs 45 on Mar 25, 2015 22:57:28 GMT 1, Martha has been documenting the street art world for a long ass time. She's as much a part of it as any of the OG's... I'm aware of her work. I'm being cynical. I'm aware of that too.
I still stand by my words. At 125, it was a pricey photo by legendary photographer. At the 250 pricing scheme, it was a depressing cash grab made by standing on the shoulders of another artist's work.
Does Banksy need to approve this too? (Like the Glitter Gorilla people were so upset over?) Or is it OK for Martha to take a Banksy image and profit from it, because of who she is/was?
"Does Banksy need to approve this too" I think Banksy would feel honoured that Martha took this photo. I'm sure he would have no problem that a seventy year old photography legend was taking photos of his work.

Yes, aparently some people seem to think that. And to top it off, a Martha Copper photo isn't worth €125. Especially one capturing a Banksy NYC exhibit, that is signed by Martha, and is limited to only 75 copies.

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Winter on Mar 25, 2015 23:01:49 GMT 1, I'm sure Banksy would be flattered to have his work photographed by Martha Cooper. I have no doubt he knows her personally and recognises how important she is to the world of street art. Same with the Maya Hayuk 'Chem Trails' edition. She has also produced many books documenting street art. Think it's fair to say any legal action is unlikely!

And your claim that doubling the price in the span of a couple of hours is not a money grab is also patently ridiculous.

She had nothing to do with the release scheme. I'll take your word for it. But when you associate yourself with people like that, it's easy for outsiders to make other associations as well.

Shady (somewhat ironic), what's your issue with the release? As someone pointed out already, these have been up for a week! You're seriously upset that the gallery decided to sell their last copy for x2 cost? And because of that alone, Martha Cooper should never deal with them again?
To my experience and knowledge, most galleries will keep a few of whatever release they're releasing, and sell them at a marked up price down the road. I don't see this as "shady" business, but rather par for the course. Or simply put...business.

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Deleted on Mar 26, 2015 0:39:19 GMT 1, Nothing shady about me my friend. I am just one guy in Florida whose been around the block a time or two. I am not a proponent of the way certain galleries and their minions behave. I am also very aware of a lot of other nefarious behavior on these types of boards, ebay, social media etc. Consider me a bearish troll who enjoys seeing the monetary benefits of this hobby dry up. I don't have a business or flat file filled with prints waiting to be sold.
I am a fan of the misbehavers like BNE, Hanksy, MBW, Pepper Spray, and other upstart artists who are bucking (mocking) the trend and doing things their own way.
It's a new beginning for me, hence the "Welcome Home" banner in my avatar.
As for these prints, I didn't know about them until today. I didn't take interest until the cost doubled. You are right, it is the way certain sellers run their "business." In my opinion, the business is shady, not me.
