Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Black Apple Art on Mar 25, 2015 20:55:41 GMT 1, Really like Martha's work and her IG feed but can't find the attraction to a picture of a Banksy street piece no matter who snapped the shutter. Just my opinion of course. Does zero for me.
BTW there are plenty available. Go to www.streetartplace.com then click the add to cart.

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by randomname on Mar 25, 2015 21:18:18 GMT 1, Personally, I don't think the photography adds any creativity to the piece. It just feels like a shameless money grab to me. I can see buying a print of one of her early photographs when few people treated graffiti as legitimate art. But this feels like she's trying to cash in on someone else's work and popularity.

You must have taken thousands of photos during your life. Has there ever been a photo you never managed to get?
MC: Banksy at work
So instead she snaps a pic of his wall piece, signs them and sells as her own work? I'm truly bathled at the attraction to this photo unless one is such a Martha fan they just like singed Martha works regardless of the image. If a member did this they'd be ripped to shreds.

Its a really cheap way to have a photo by a legend of the 'scene'. The image is of one of the best 'shows' ever put together and as I couldn't see it in the flesh, this is a bit of a no brainer for me.
Its not The greatest piece ever but for 120 euros, I can't see the downside.

If Martha's funds went to charity I woukd have never commented... Well maybe once Might have even bought one depending on the charity. Changes the dynamic entirely

Maybe it is not clear that the show is "The history of street art from the 70s to today through the shots of the legendary American photographer Martha Cooper." I think the Ghetto 4 Life picture has been chosen by the gallery as a symbol of "modern Street Art". please stop saying bullshit. I would never buy a photo of a Banksy street piece taken by mr nobody; Martha is over 70 years old and lived the street art from day one, in the street, not in the gallery. please stop talking shit about an institution like Martha Cooper on a street art forum, is really embarrassing. She is not Mrs nobody.

I'm aware of her work. I'm being cynical. I'm aware of that too.
I still stand by my words. At 125, it was a pricey photo by legendary photographer. At the 250 pricing scheme, it was a depressing cash grab made by standing on the shoulders of another artist's work.
Does Banksy need to approve this too? (Like the Glitter Gorilla people were so upset over?) Or is it OK for Martha to take a Banksy image and profit from it, because of who she is/was?

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Dr Plip on Mar 25, 2015 22:04:54 GMT 1, Martha Cooper has fans and I'm sure they would buy signed prints of many of her street art photographs. This would be considered a bonus that it features a Banksy image. Street art photography is what she's best known for and I don't think it's realistic to expect Banksy's work to be off limits.
I don't know if members on here would get slated if they tried to sell signed photographs of street art. They probably just wouldn't sell? But Martha Cooper isn't just a member on here.
I can't comment on whether the price was high (it has sold out), but if Martha Cooper is to be criticized for cashing in on street art, then there are also a lot of book publishers, magazines, and websites out there that deserve the same critical attention.
I guess as with most things in this shallow world we inhabit, vote with your wallet.

Martha Cooper 🇺🇸 Subway Art Book • New York Graffiti , by Deleted on Mar 25, 2015 22:21:16 GMT 1, Like I said twice before, the pricing scheme is disgusting. Not dismissing her career, though I am not exactly giving her credit for establishing the "street art" scene. Prefer Gibbs work personally.
Still, I'd like to see someone defend the pricing scheme.
I'd also like one of our resident experts to tell me why it is OK for someone who is "established" to profit from capturing (photo print or silkscreen print) another artists work and reproducing it under their name. While an "un-established" artist cannot.
