Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by gravity1 on Mar 31, 2017 18:41:26 GMT 1, Not a fan of these in general but this is just plain horrible. IMO, if you can't cast the object piece properly then simply choose something that casts well. The whole point is to replicate the object, not grossly distort it to accommodate the limitations of your faux fossilization.

Yeah I don't get what they mean by "Cast the object piece properly". If referring to the headphones I think they're the Sony DJ headphones from the 2000's and not the stock ones that came with the Walkman II.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by dwight on Mar 31, 2017 19:02:12 GMT 1, Looks like this sale is done.. Like his work or not, he's really been on the fast track lately. I'm somewhat surprised he has continued to sell these future relic objects. I'm happy because it keeps his artwork accessible, but it would not surprise me if they ceased.
Does anyone know the connection between Arsham and Gagosian? I believe Gagosian has been the force behind artwork at Eden Rock in St Barth....they've had Kaws, Jonas Wood, and Arsham installs in recent years..

Either way the cast headphones look like a horseshoe.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by Con Art Studio on Mar 31, 2017 19:07:26 GMT 1, seems as if the base the cassette player is sitting on is actually part of the piece. besides the price, that was a deciding factor in not getting one. there's a reason none of the photos shows the back of piece.
does this bother anyone?

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by dundun on Mar 31, 2017 19:12:51 GMT 1, Could it be this is a subtle reference to hip hop and it's death as a culture? The backpacker look of the late 90s-2000's featured a person wearing large headphones and since burning cd's was still very hard to do the "mixtape" culture was still very much alive. Tony touch tapes and stretch/bobbito tapes(recorded from radio) were still passed around, revered and were still held in a cult-like status.
That's my guess but maybe I'm reading too much into it. I just don't think he would've made an object just to make it(which is, if he couldn't cast the headphones right because they're too fragile and then threw some random thicker headphones on them). Maybe these relics are intended to transcend the object and they're making a statement on how we use them too.

Your hip-hop knowledge is on point but... the larger headphone culture started with beats. Nobody was rockin these larger headphones then except dj's. I don't like this either way but the headphones that came standard with walkmans (especially the yellow sport models) would have been more apropos. The idea was to be compact and portable at that time. Some headphones were even foldable.
