Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by randomname on Dec 19, 2016 17:24:14 GMT 1, You're welcome to disagree. There's nothing wrong with being wrong. Part of what makes great art great is originality. Kaws, while not my cup of tea, did something original. I don't think you would look at his work and say another artist did the exact same thing first. And in case you didn't notice, the Future Fossils by Bughouse were cast in concrete. Daniel copied the idea exactly, only leaving off the patina. Taking another artist's idea is not only unoriginal, it's dishonest and unethical. I find that collectors tend to mirror the ethics (or lack thereof) of the artists they collect more often than not. Ha. That's a pretty pompous claim when you're debating opinion. Please explain to me what KAWS or BANKSY did that's so original? Painting your character over adverts isn't exactly new and neither is making ironic social commentary using stencils. I mean KAWS admits his Companion and Chum characters are his take on Mickey Mouse and the Michelin man. Not original at all. In fact nothing is original anymore. Almost everything has been done and it's just a matter of time until someone unearths an artists source. There's a famous Einstein quote about that. I still think the future fossil series is crap and Daniel's execution is miles better. You can tell me I'm wrong about that, but you can't debate that almost all art is derivative in one form or another. The challenge/beauty lies in the execution and I'll stand by that. The thing about opinions is that when they're based on false information, they will invariably be wrong. And your opinion is based on a complete lack of information at best.
KAWS was the first artist to use cartoon characters to subvert outdoor advertising. That's original. He became a legend in NYC street art before street art was a thing. He transitioned that into abstract cartoon art in galleries, which was also original.
Banksy was the first stencil artist doing social satire. He pioneered street art as we know it today. His art was a seismic shift from graffiti. He's probably the most imitated street artist of all time because his work was so original.
I couldn't care less if Danny executed someone else's idea better than they did. It's not his idea. It's not even derivative. It's theft. But like I said, collectors tend to mirror the ethics of the artists they collect more often than not.

So many NYC street artists were using cartoon characters for DECADES before KAWS(go pickup a copy of any Martha Cooper/Chalfant book). He was just the first one to have a key to the bus stops and put them on actual advertising. That's not original that's just finding a new way to do the old shit. You're helping prove my point. He did nothing that was groundbreaking. His execution where was the beauty was. His cartoon characters weren't even original as he's basically copying warhol's corporate branding as art.
Before Banksy there was Blek Le Rat. Whom BANKSY even says, "Everytime I wanted to create something I found out Blek had already done it." BANKSY just did it better than Blek and so he's more famous.
Get a clue before you act like you know it all.

Like I said, KAWS was the first to subvert outdoor advertising with cartoons. He integrated the characters into the ads as if they were meant to be there. That was an original idea. And that's why it resonated with so many people. Simply painting a cartoon on the wall is not the same thing. If you lack the intelligence to see the difference, I don't think I can help you.
And like I said, Banksy was the first stencil artist to do social satire. Any resemblance to Blek's work is purely superficial. They both painted silhouettes with stencils, but the similarity stopped there. Blek's art was not political or satirical. He generally painted figures with no deeper meaning. Banksy's work resonates because there is an idea or statement behind most of his work.
As far as the quote goes, that's this new thing called sarcasm. Blek was an obscure artist in another country who quit painting a decade before Banksy came along. It's highly unlikely that Banksy ever even heard of him. After Banksy became famous, Blek came out of the woodwork and has been riding his coattails ever since. A few mindless haters accused Banksy of stealing his style. Banksy was mocking them, knowing they're not bright enough to know when they're being mocked. Somehow I'm not surprised you didn't pick up on that.

Plaster casts have existed for centuries.
Concepts like originality and copying have no place in art (see Duchamp. Then Warhol).
At best one should use the term derivative.
With Arsham its not a question of figure, form or technique, it's a question of concept (see Duchamp again) as it should be.
PS: The most famous artist in history was also the biggest asshole in history. So that's no argument either.

I feel like I'm talking to special kid losing his shรญt. Given your writing ability, or the lack thereof, I'm probably not far off.
Breaking into bus shelters and integrating your own art seamlessly into ads as if it belongs there is the idea. It's what connects one piece of his art to another. Individual pieces of work are executions. Specific Guess or Bebe ads are executions of the idea. Given your inability to form a coherent thought, I fully expect this to fly well over your head.
And back to Banksy, yes they both painted rats. Among many other things. Here's a thought exercise for you. Imagine you're in a large city at night painting images on the street. Look around. What do you see? Okay sorry, I know imagination isn't your thing so I'll spell it out for you. You see rats. It's not much of a coincidence that two artists would be influenced by similar environments. Even if that influence was expressed in vastly different ways.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by Shoot Again on Dec 20, 2016 10:32:10 GMT 1, I finally got a shipping confirmation email 30mn ago, but still no refund nor email. I'm quoting myself I was contacted by Daniel Arsham's team just few minutes ago, see below
"Yes we are working on adjusting the shipping costs and sending refunds for the difference in cost. You should receive the shipping refund later today. Thanks for your patience while we sort this out. There was some problem with the eBay sale this time and it charged everyone so much! We are fixing it!"
EDIT: I've just received a partial refund of $238, cool
I've now received a confirmation that my order has been dispatched and is on its way but I've had no mention of any possible partial refund of those shipping costs, neither from eBay nor from DA's Team ;-( May I ask all of you how to proceed and who exactly to reach out to to get this done ? Thank you

Thank you Just sent you a PM

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by Shoot Again on Dec 21, 2016 9:05:11 GMT 1, Bad news for everybody that was bad mouting on Arsham Team (who supposedly didn't care about all of us) but more importantly very good news for those involved, they ACTUALLY DO REFUND YOU (PROMPTLY) PARTIALLY ($240) if you get in touch with them and nicely re-explain the situation ;-) Here is what I did, thanks to Cutkillavince who told me all about it ("Thank you mate again") which I reckon is worth being shared with all of you...
If your order was dispatched by USPS (like mine was) then contact the seller via eBay(you have the option on your eBay summary page) and explain your case (non US buyer, expansive shipping fees, change from UPS to USPS so you assume they found a solution with eBay to lower the shipping costs)
This is I wrote in the message : "Hi, I'm based in London UK and I had to pay $317.88 for the shipping costs. In the order description, it was mentioned it will be shipped via UPS Worldwide Express Plus. I know that some non-US customers already contacted you about this and you told them that you were working it out with eBay and hopefully can present a new option to lower the shipping cost. Today, I got a shipping confirmation notice from eBay and I can see that my item was shipped via USPS. So I assume, this is the cheaper option, however, I didn't get any news/reply about partial refund for the shipping costs. Could you please give me an update ? Many thanks in advance, Regards"
Refund came next day ! Happy Xmas everybody ;-)

To be fair they didn't really have an option but for those that took the gamble it has paid off. Surprised me as watching his social media profiles he has come across as a right c*nt when people were questioning his rip off charges.
Still do not buy the fact that the shipping charges were out of their control they would have had direct dialogue with eBay over this release and agreed rates before the drop.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by Poster Bob on Dec 30, 2016 14:21:13 GMT 1, Same deal. I received only one of the two I ordered, the shipping label was missing letters of the town name, didn't include the state, and the zip code appeared in the format "1 3 5" instead of "12345". Amazing.

Cat not in the UK but i live less than 45 minutes from where it was being shipped and mine finally arrived today. shipping label was created on december 9th and it was actually shipped on december 15th. then it was sent to three different post offices for delivery, post offices in wrong cities and counties. finally arrived today. i noticed that they didn't enter in the last 3 digits of my zip code on the label and there was a mark on the barcode which probably lead to the scanner sending it to the wrong places. the post office added a sticker on top that reads "Zip codes help speed delivery of the mail"... haha

No refund & I am yet to receive the piece.
Shoddy, shocking, greedy, ignorant & arrogant.
