Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by misterquiche on Nov 11, 2013 17:02:36 GMT 1, This one's in their Helsinki sale; In our opinion, due to the specific subculture of this genre, probably an authentic work by one or several artists or persons, but we can not fully guarantee this. no pest control, hence low price, just being sold based on their opinion. same as the Barcode they have in the Stockholm auction.

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by treweman on Nov 11, 2013 17:03:27 GMT 1, They write "probably an authentic work" in the auction catalog. What more do you need to know? No provenance means extreme risk.

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by vinzc on Nov 11, 2013 17:16:32 GMT 1, my general thought re auctions:
im still fairly new to the auction scene...but im really surprised that many auction houses dont do a better job in this regard. how could you sell a non-authenticated piece? it's the same with framed prints when they say "the print has not been examined outside of it's frame." so you're telling me there's no way to confirm how it was framed, and up to museum/archival standards? as a newbie to the auction space, this could very well be common practice, but id think if you're primary function is to sell legitimate art (and in turn, require/create a sound reputation), not inspecting the framed prints or claiming no responsibility in authenticating is somewhat lazy. buyer beware always...but come on...do your job.
while it's still a low price for a banksy, 6-8k euro is still a fair amount of scratch to take a chance at an auction house with a hefty buyers premium.

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by Gulosten on Nov 11, 2013 17:16:58 GMT 1, I don't understand why a well established auction house takes the risk of selling something that might be fake?
Or selling a Banksyprint without a COA, it's not that much work getting the papers from Pest Control..

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by misterquiche on Nov 11, 2013 17:23:08 GMT 1, yup, seems lazy. I spoke to them today as I'm based in Stockholm and they really didn't seem to care. I was told that Barcode was bought by the current owner at a 'legendary' scandanavian art show in '05 but there's no PC / COA & they haven't examined it out of frame. way too big of a risky buy. it's strange. I know Bukowski's are well respected here but that's nowhere near enough

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by Happy Shopper on Nov 11, 2013 17:26:59 GMT 1, What does this mean?
"It will be stated, if there is a certificate of authenticity for the work of art by "Lazarides" or "Pest Control". It will also be stated if the work of art is published, e.g. in "Banksy, Wall and Piece" or if it is to be found on the internet at e.g. "Banksy Tour in London / Bristol / Berlin". It will also be stated if the work of art has any specific provenance, e.g. from any gallery (and whether any certificate is issued by the gallery)."
Sounds... and looks.... dodgy to me.

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by johnnyh on Nov 11, 2013 17:28:36 GMT 1, Think the below actually says they have no idea. Eg it has no provenance at all otherwise it would be stated. It says it is probably an authentic work but not by who. Eg it could be my authentic work...
so the auction house is being fair here in that they are saying they have no idea and they have seen nothing to say its a Banksy. They are saying if they had anything like these things it would say it but they don't so they are being clear. In that they have seen nothing. ------------------ In our opinion, due to the specific subculture of this genre, probably an authentic work by one or several artists or persons, but we can not fully guarantee this. The work of art may be reworked, adapted or stenciled. Please note: It will be stated, if there is a certificate of authenticity for the work of art by "Lazarides" or "Pest Control". Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by misterquiche on Nov 11, 2013 17:30:13 GMT 1, Yup, that's a very large statement basically stating there is no coa / proof that it's authentic as if it was they would reference from where. it's big n wordy to fill a space. I will watch both of these to see if they meet their estimates. I wouldn't put my money anywhere near them!

If it's not been taken out of the frame it could easily have a lovely WCP stamp on the back.

soon to be less well established.
it's a shame it does happen - they have let it happen - it's their call it's their auction.
if you can't get your house in order - you will attract less business - if they don't care.. and it does sell high.. their reputation will go down that hill pretty fast.
imo - i don't have an op on this one - speaks for itself .. it's a street work - no coa / nothing...

Is this Banksy original fake (up on auction)?, by hnkpnk on Nov 11, 2013 19:02:55 GMT 1, You want road signs, I'll give you road signs:
hankpank.net/banksy/bukowskis/
I created this page in 2009/2010 for Bukowskis when they had another "Banksy" sign in one of their auctions. I sent it along with a long letter explaining why it with 99.9% chance wasn't genuine and how the Banksy authentication process work. Did I even receive a reply?
At least they changed the description to include some confusing text about the uncertainty of the authenticity. But it sold for a ridiculous amount anyway.
The pics are all from Ebay around 2008-2009 and are not mine.

Again newbie at auctions...but at face, shame on them. Really. That's embarrassing. IMO, the additional disclaimer is not really acceptable given that they were clued in to the reality of it all and that the piece could be suspect.

Publicity of this nature is not high on their list of priorities..
Rat or no rat.
This rat ain't for the punters.
Hank , what's the prob with it .. Can't it be updated anymore.. The timeline thingy..
