It's a well-known truism that the mark of a great artist is their ability to capture light. So you will note that this piece is rendered entirely in silhouette. To the average viewer, this may seem at first glance a thin, faux, comical cartoon aimed at providing a small glimmer of light relief to local commuters. But look again and what do you see? That's right. A structural re-contextualizing of the juxtaposition between form and surface. Welcome to the art world.
Perhaps Banksy is playing with the notion that graffiti is the territorial sprayings of feral youth? After all, wouldn't the architecture hoisted on our cities be incomplete without the maverick stains of those answering back? Or perhaps, as some would argue, this is a broader comment on the nature of abusive relationships? But those people need to shut up, you know? They need to have some sense beaten into them because that's like the stupidest thing I've ever heard, you know? How could that relate to anything but a dog peeing on a hydrant..."
If Banksy ever tires of making street art, he'd make one heckuva comedy writer.

There are cameras EVERYWHERE. EVERYONE has a smart phone that takes pix and video. Knowing he is out there (with a crew/group of helpers), can he really do this without being caught? Walk thru manhattan sometime and look for all the cameras...they're unavoidable. Not saying he will be "unmasked", but someone will catch him in the act.

Also is it not possible that the first one was a permission wall? If I were the building owner I would have slapped it in perspex or cut it out straight away, unless i'd been paid handsomely to keep it covered prior to launch and then let nature take its course...

This is why it's in NYC and not LA. He probably did a few of the pieces himself prior to the NYC announcement so no-one was looking for him (obviously the puking one included), then the simpler/quicker ones like accent and the dog are getting done by "Team Banksy" along with unveiling and adding the phone numbers on the ones done in advance.. The taggers on the other hand have tons of people looking at each piece all the time half the worlds media and almost every art blog covering it and yet not one of them have been seen or caught. So they are having no problem with detection it seems so sure Mr B and his crew will be fine for a while

I don't claim to know much/anything about Banksy as an individual, but having read most of his official 'pronouncements' in his books, website, prints and on this project I can say with some certainty that the chances of him quoting Rebecca Black lyrics on an official feed are slim to none. Which pretty much gives that account up as being a fake. I just unfollowed it. |
