Ebay question/concern, by ray on Nov 9, 2007 17:26:58 GMT 1, Hoping to get some opinions on an Ebay transaction that's throwing up a few red flags, maybe I'm just being paranoid.
I just sold an expensive (to me) print on Ebay. The buyer (from England) emailed me before he bought it and asked if I would send it to a hotel in NY next week.
I emailed back and told him I would only send to a confirmed address. He bought the print anyway. I then received an email from him telling me to ship it to the hotel in NY. I did receive payment via PayPal..
I've transferred the money from PayPal to my bank account, it should take 3 business days to hit. Even though I've been paid I'm really leary of sending it to NY because I have no protection from PayPal unless I ship it to a confirmed address.
On one hand I can understand him wanting to take possesion while's he's in NY (I assume for VAT reasons) but on the other hand I'm out swinging in the wind if something bad happens.
Thanks in advance,
Ray

Ebay question/concern, by Richard on Nov 9, 2007 17:31:08 GMT 1, Just make sure you keep all communication between the two of you and send so it requires a signiature.
I can't see too much going wrong to be honest if he has good feedback - what's his feedback like?

Ebay question/concern, by ray on Nov 9, 2007 17:35:40 GMT 1, He has perfect feedback. From what is visible mostly items under 30 dollars. No art.
I'd feel better about it if he'd bought some artwork before or something over 30 dollars. The print went for close to 7K.

Ebay question/concern, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2007 17:42:20 GMT 1, i don't know much about this kind of situation, but if the money has been paid into your account, the customer imo has a right to have it sent where ever they want. just keep emails and post with a isgnature required.

Ebay question/concern, by leehambly on Nov 9, 2007 17:43:28 GMT 1, doesnt even bear thinking about... i'd try to get a phone conversation wit the guy at the very least to see if there is an intermediate at the registered address you can send it to. 7k is a deposit on a house, or a car sort of amount... way too much to risk on convenience and I want it now factor for either of you.

Ebay question/concern, by GD303uk on Nov 9, 2007 18:00:02 GMT 1, I would only send the print to the confirmed address on paypal, even after the money is in your bank if the buyer wanted he can still get his money back, paypal have deriect debit and your card details, they can take the money back of you weeks after the fact, even if you cancel the debit with your bank they can take the money back from your card. if the print goes AWOL @ any stage your fooked. and its a no win situation with paypal, they always side with the buyer. i have had this happen to me, the buyer got the item but claimed he didnt, paypal refund him the money and screw you over. i couldnt stop the refund and they freeze the acount, also the buyer can retrieve his money days after its gone through. i would just say its confirmed address or not at all, send signed for and insuared mail, hope it goes well , the nearly always do.

I'm going to let him know that I'll only ship to his confirmed address in England. He's probably going to want to cancel the deal over it but so be it. To many red flags going up and PayPal can be %$#^*#

Frankly if he doesnt go for it, then you know something is up... no one, surely (don't care who you are or how much you have), spends 7k without care.

Ebay question/concern, by ray on Nov 9, 2007 18:32:51 GMT 1, I agree,
I just found this on PayPals site. It's exactly my situation.
"Be extra cautious with high-priced items.
Itโs fairly common for shipping addresses to differ from billing addresses. However, be extra cautious when sending high-priced items, especially if payment is received from one country and sent to another."

This happened with a friend that sold a camera on ebay The buyer paid with paypal then my friend transfered the money to his account. He send the camera and the buyer left good feedback. After a month.. paypal gave the buyer a refund because he claimed he never got the camera. Paypal took it out the cash from his bank account and refunded the buyer. They said it wasn't sent to the confirmed address... Hope that helps.
