L.E.T. "How is this happening !?" , by Pretty Portal on Dec 23, 2020 21:23:12 GMT 1, I watched the very powerful video on Vimeo. Pretty Portal do you know if Azim has made it to Germany to see his family? Also how has the exhibition been received and has it had publicity and caused discussion locally? I think it looks like LET in a very powerful, but sympathetic way has done well drawing attention to this tragedy without aestetisizing other people’s pain and misery ( which is always a very fine line to tread). No, Azim is still in the camp. L.E.T. is in frequent contact with him.
The local feedback on the show is pretty strong. Everyday many people pass by to see the installation through the gallery window. While I was working in the second room of the gallery people showed me a thumbs, when I had a bit of eye contact. People make IG stories and I received many positive mails.
The show was featured in Widewalls Magazine recently: www.widewalls.ch/magazine/let-installation-pretty-portal

L.E.T. "How is this happening !?" , by Pretty Portal on Dec 21, 2020 15:44:13 GMT 1,
L.E.T. "How is this happening !?" Dear board members,
I hope this post finds you well and healthy. Despite the shutdown and other limitations we just opened a show at Pretty Portal which is quite important for us. The show is in the front room of the gallery, so everybody passing by can see it through the gallery window. A social comment and public art in the days where most cultural institutions are closed.
Since the 11th of December, we are showing an installation by Düsseldorf based urban artist L.E.T. entitled "How is this happening?” In his work, L.E.T. reflects upon the situation of the refugees stranded at the gates of Europe. He uses life jackets as his medium and shows how this symbol of hope is transformed on the journey of most refugees. L.E.T. travelled to Lesbos a few months ago and visited the "life jacket graveyard", a landfill of harrowing dimensions where the life jackets left behind by refugees end up. The unreal image of this eerie place, which he had already seen three years ago in a documentary, never left him. During his stay on Lesbos he paid the “life jacket graveyard” a visit, spoke with refugees and helpers from the organisation "The Hope Project", forming his own picture of the situation. After his return, three body bags were sewn from the life jackets he had collected on Lesbos. These are the central element of the installation and show the transformation of hope into mourning. They bear witness to the journey of a myriad of people fleeing inhumane conditions, a journey that meets its cruel end at the gates of Fortress Europe.
A little making of video from the show can be seen here.
Especially in the pre-Christmas season the work brings to mind the image of the manger. A couple with child who were not welcome anywhere and were forced to seek refuge in a barn. In about 2000 years, predominantly Christian Europe has not yet internalised its own core values of philanthropy and charity, values that are celebrated once again this year during Christmas and find their main expression in an abundance of material gifts.
L.E.T. was accompanied on his journey by artist Laura Knapp and cameraman Chris Schwarz. Schwarz documented the artist's stay and the situation on site. The film, which is also part of the installation, can be viewed here. (vimeo.com/485174602/c36a9b9770).
In the exhibition "How is this happening?" L.E.T. also shows some canvases reflecting his experiences on Lesbos and a new limited edition print, that will be released on 14th of January 2021.

Sebastien Preschoux & Marc Woehr "Curves and Corners" , by Pretty Portal on Oct 9, 2020 14:14:02 GMT 1,
From October 9th, we are showing works by Sebastien Preschaoux and Marc C. Woehr, in the exhibition “Curves and Corners”. The visual worlds of the two artists harmonize and contrast at the same time. Woehr and Preschoux, both work graphically abstract and use clear forms to create their picture compositions. On the one hand circles and curved shapes, on the other straight lines, diagonals and corners. The visual contrast between the image concepts continues in the layers, that lie below. While Marc C. Woehr also uses the computer and other machines to create his compositions, Sebastien Preschoux relies exclusively on manual work.
More info about the show and the artists can be found here
Send me a PM with your mail address if you would like to receive the catalogue (pdf) of the show.

Printrelease - kurznachzehn, by Pretty Portal on Jun 9, 2020 16:27:33 GMT 1,
Dear board members,
Some things take a little longer. For example, if a package with a complete print edition ends up in quarantine when shipped from the United States. This happened with kurznachzehn´s edition "The end will be a new beginning", which the artist sprayed a few days before the COVID lockdown in the USA. The edition finally arrived after eight weeks. "The end will be a new beginning" follows kurznachzehn´s editions "The world is my home", "Heimat und Zuhause" and "Arrival and Departure" and continues the series consistently. The boy who travels the world with the bird and it´s house by foot, in a boat or waiting at a train station has to stay at home this time. kurznachzehn painted the edition with stencils and spray paint on newspaper. All sheets of the small edition of only 15 copies are slightly different and thus have the character of a one-off. The already released editions of this series were all sold out after minutes. "The end will be a new beginning" will be released on Wednesday 10th of June, 4pm (CET) in our online-shop and in our gallery in Düsseldorf.

Printrelease JANA&JS, 28.5. , by Pretty Portal on May 27, 2020 17:03:00 GMT 1, Dear board members. .
As part of the current exhibition "STENCILS ONLY" we release JANA&Js latest edition "La femme au fleur" this Thursday, May 28th.
The edition is painted by the artists with stencils, spray paint, acrylics and ink on vintage music papers. All pieces of the small edition of only 12 copies are slightly different and thus have the character of a one-off. Jana & JS also leave a lot of space in this picture to deal with the diversity and subtle nuances of human feelings. In spite of the representation of a nude seen from behind, the picture dispenses with superficial stimuli and draws the viewer into a world behind the visually perceptible. Each print comes with a signed original inocut (22x16cm) from JANA&JS as a gift.
The edition will drop on the 28th of May, 6pm in our online shop. Please send your inquiries to rosskothen@prettyportal.de

MONKEYBIRD "Between here and now" solo show // 29.11., by Pretty Portal on Nov 27, 2019 16:34:53 GMT 1,
Dear board members,
When anthropomorphic figures, representing body and soul, remind of complete beings – it must be MONKEBIRD showing at Pretty Portal gallery. The French duo crew, based in Paris, have progressed hugely in the last couple of years and have brought to the public, some jaw droping, wall creations and installations as well as stunning gallery shows. This Friday (29.11.) we will open the gates for MONKEBIRD´s solo show "Betwewen here and now" and we are pretty excited about it. If you are around, we would be happy to invite you to the opening of the show.
Send me a PM with your mail address, if you would like to receive the collectors preview (pdf) of the show.
On the opening night we will also present MONKEYBIRD´s latest screen print. The print will be released on 5th of December at shop.prettyportal.de
BETWEEN HERE AND NOW
MONKEYBIRD (fr)
Opening reception 29.11. 7-10 pm Show 02.12.19 – 31.01.20 MO – FR 11am-7pm and by appointment
MONKEYBIRD´s work show a search for balance between dreams and reality. Loaded with symbols and allegries, their pieces are an emotional and rational discussion about human progress. Most MONKEYBIRD artworks incorporate a humanoid monkey and bird, which represent the two faces of humankind, the monkey being the realist, and the bird being a dreamer. The artists try to follow the ancestor’s knowledge and adapt it to reach the modern citizens mind, with symbolic pictures. MONKEYBIRD are inspired by ephemeral monumentality, religious and mythological paintings and art nouveaux.

Ruben Carrasco & Rustam QBic "Backwards Future" show , by Pretty Portal on May 9, 2019 18:17:09 GMT 1,
In May two artist from different continents will enter the dialogue at Pretty Portal to discuss about the future of mankind. In their images, Mexican Artist Ruben Carrasco and Russian artist Rustam Qbik tell stories of space shamans, spiritual travellers exploring a paradise like world – and astronauts leaving their sinking spaceship behind, to reconnect in a gravityless surrounding. Reality built on the human condition, myths, our interaction with nature, how we modify it, and the cultural development of hybrid societies typical of the modern world. Both artist share the idea of a fragile world and of humans depending on it. Their approch is very sensitive, showing hope and positivity, but also the need to transform from the inside.
Please send me a pm with your mail address or a mail to info[at]prettyportal.de if you would like to receive the preview (PDF) of the show.
Ruben Carrasco was born and raised in Mexico, where he studied at the Institute of Visual Arts. Since then he has continued his studies at the Anahuac University in Cancun, Mexico, and later at McGill University and at Dawson College in Montreal, Canada. In addition to his development as an artist, he has also worked as a tattoo artist, set designer, muralist, photographer, graphic- and digital-designer. His style can be discribed as figurative and narrative. It is inspired by classical imagery of roman and greek statues as well as indian ethnics and modern popsurrealism. This exceptional mix gives Ruben the space to create surrealistic worlds, where he experiments with his perception of modern times. A world traveler, Ruben has lived throughout Europe and America working and exhibiting in several countries. Currently, he lives in Montreal, where he has collaborated with the General Consulate of Mexico as a jury member of the Art Exhibitions Evaluation Committee for “Espacio México”. In addition, Ruben founded the artists international collective named “5 wolves no pigs” and co-founded the FIAP and IPAF art festivals.
Rustam QBic was born in 1985 in Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. He studied at the Kazan Art School, worked with illustration, design and graffiti and taught at the Children’s School of Design. His love for graffiti and creating work in public was quickly complemented by his love for classic painting and it didn’t take long until he replaced the letter based works with surrealist story telling pictures and characters. This new style that blends illustrative elements, surrealist imagery and distinctive color palette was first revealed at his debut solo show in 2013 at the Street Kit Gallery in Moscow. Highly influenced by life, his family, nature and books, Rustam’s work carry universal messages of love, knowledge and spirituality while constantly developing his visual language and technique. Actively working both on large scale murals and canvases, he participated in urban art events in Russia, Norway, Switzerland, USA, Australia, New Zealand etc, as well as in charity auctions alongside Swoon, Phlegm, Faile, Sandra Chevrier and many others.

Ardif 🇨🇵 Street Artist • New Print Release , by Pretty Portal on Mar 21, 2019 18:29:41 GMT 1,
ARDIF MACHINaturE vs MachiNATURE
On the 22nd of March we will open ARDIF’s solo exhibition “MACHINaturE vs MachiNATURE” at Pretty Portal gallery. In his works, the French artist shows a juxtaposition of nature and machine. He points out how man copies nature with his creations. Engineers and designers of machinery relate ideas from nature and reproduce them. However, these replicas are in fact only limited copies and do not match the precision, complexity and performance of the originals. Nature is the source of ideas. Man only plagiarist. Furthermore, ARDIF deals with the threat to nature by humans, and the balance to find between technical progress and respect of the environment. After having shown only compositions of the fauna in his paintings in recent years, flora has now also found its way into ARDIF´s works.
Send me a PM with your email address if you would like to receive the catalog of the show
ARDIF is a french artist who deals with mechanics behind living entities. His drawings mostly present animals, which become a mechanical being. ARDIF’s animals are divided indeed: While the one side is completely natural, the second half portrays a transformation with mechanical and architectural elements. The contrast between this binary opposition creates an engaging tension for the viewer. Above that, ARDIF enlarges his drawings and introduces them as Paste Ups into the street. By now, Paris’ urban image cannot be thought of without the divided natural and mechanical animals.

L.E.T. "No walls for old men" , by Pretty Portal on Dec 6, 2018 15:44:50 GMT 1,
Tomorrow evening (7.12.), we will open L.E.T.´s solo show "No walls for old men", at Pretty Portal. If you are around, I would be happy to invite you to the opening of the show at 7pm.
Send me a PM with your email address to receive the preview (PDF) of the show
L.E.T. “No walls for old men” The title of L.E.T.’s solo exhibition “No walls for old men” should not be taken so literally. Although he is one of the longest active Stencil artists in Germany and thus one of the “old hands” of the still young art style Urban Contemporary, but he is not old yet – and he also must not worry, that he doesn´t get walls. The Urban Art Museum Munich (MUCA) recently dedicated his own space to him and this summer he traveled from one festival to the next to install his interventions in the urban space on site. The title is rather an example of L.E.T.’s way of working. Citing, deconstructing and modifying the known. After L.E.T. has now participated several times in the „Stencils Only“ exhibitions “No walls for old men” is his first solo show at Pretty Portal gallery.

Roman Klonek "From the woods to the blocks" show , by Pretty Portal on Oct 11, 2018 18:34:31 GMT 1,
This Friday, 12th of October, we will open the exhibition “From the Woods to the Blocks” by Roman Klonek. Please send me a PM with your email if you would like to receive the preview (PDF) from the show.
After we have shown Roman a few times in group exhibitions, this is finally his first solo show at Pretty Portal. On one hand, the title of the exhibition refers to the technique with which Roman Klonek creates his works, namely the woodcut or woodblock print and, secondly, his exploration of urbanity. Here is a small making of from one of the works from the current exhibition.
Roman Klonek on his exhibition:
“In the exhibition” From the woods to the blocks ” at Pretty Portal, you can see how the traditional craftsmanship of woodcarving meets experimental forms of narration. The narratives are free of categorical specifications and are neither clear in terms of time nor space. Quite comparable to a full sketchbook, if you imagine the paper would be transparent and everything “drawn” you just see hopeless gibberish and confusion. Maybe I should mention now that I love messing around and to clean up afterward. If it comes to an unexpected coincidence of two or more ideas (which often happens in a natural way), it may well happen that these encounters cause a moment of happiness in me because of their originality. As for the combination of these ideas, or picture elements, I like to move in the tradition of the so-called B-movies, the fact that they are an alternative to the calculable mainstream cinema, with much more risk-taking and without regard to conceptual rigor, often the key features in telling stories – the moments of surprise. ”
Roman Klonek, born in Kattowitz/Poland, is an internationally known representative of contemporary print art. He has a spot for old fashioned cartoons, especially east European styles. In the 90s, he studied Arts in Duesseldorf and discovered a passion for woodcut printing. Bizarre creatures, metamorphoses of humans and animals, meet and show themselves in a pop surreal environment. Striking are typographic elements of Cyrillic and Asian characters. Roman Klonek combines propaganda, folk and pop. From 2001 to 2008, Klonek participated in the gallery „Galerie Revolver“ in Düsseldorf. He attended the festival „Pictoplasma“ several times. Besides his artistic work he is a guest professor at Folkwang University of the arts in Essen and lives and works in Düsseldorf. In the exhibition, there is a selection of woodblock prints from the artist’s current creative period, as well as a screen print edition of the artwork “Souta Mouse”
