Is FAILE over?, by trapnel1 on Aug 10, 2017 17:43:15 GMT 1, Then why the hell am I having such a hard time selling the FAILE "Prints and Originals" artist edition books? They are extremely rare, signed, stamped, iconic images... What gives? I think you if look to sell them at close to original cost that you will find buyers. There's a huge amount of Faile material available and secondary market (with a few exceptions) is not particularly strong....

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on May 10, 2016 17:47:10 GMT 1, Three walls of this to fill (I'll probably manage!) so a few more suggestions required.....
PS. You'd think with all those books there would be no problem reaching the thirty word limit.

delete, by trapnel1 on May 8, 2016 12:33:23 GMT 1, With the help of polymindset I've emailed Ted and asked if I can meet up and have a look around his Belfast studio. I'll let you all know how I get on! If there are any particular questions people would like to ask please PM me....... Was chatting to him today, nice chap. He'll be painting in sunny Berlin in the not too distant future for Urban Nation. Still think those street pieces are shady as f**k though ;-). Sorry Ted ;-) I think we should just be pleased to have become aware of a talented and interesting artist, who hopefully will have a good future!
I doubt if we can take the story of the older pieces much further, though I have no doubt that Ted has been in those places. He will be painting in Berlin shortly though, so presumably that process will be better documented..........

delete, by trapnel1 on May 7, 2016 6:35:10 GMT 1, I'd be more worried about those pieces being real rather than the artist, the look like a photoshop job, you don't paint s**t like that and no one sees it, you don't also paint so few pieces of that quality. Joker?
I've met with the artist and seen his work in his studio. Based on the evidence I've seen I have no doubt at all about the quality of the work.
In more general terms, I'm sure there are many artists with fantastic technical ability painting quietly for their own pleasure of whom the members of this forum remain completely unaware....

delete, by trapnel1 on May 4, 2016 14:09:07 GMT 1, I am hoping street art news labelled them wrong, and they were both painted in the same room, but then that would preclude he painted one then painted the next directly on top. Can someone please prove my misgivings wrong... AP detective agency signing off! Impressive work.... seems pretty conclusive to me!

Harland Miller Show, by trapnel1 on Apr 25, 2016 19:57:30 GMT 1, Several members have made a pretty good attempt at explaining what HM's work means to them (which is a considerable advance from the like it / don't which characterises a lot of other threads). I have thousands (literally) of old books, and my HMs complement them. Not everyone would think the same - but I'm the one who looks at them every day! Luckily there's plenty of art out there and all tastes can be accommodated.......

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 23, 2016 20:29:31 GMT 1, Limited edition of Boogie-Woogie, a novel about the contemporary art word by Danny Moynihan (Duck editions, 2000). It was subsequently made into a film of the same name which I haven't seen. The jacket designed by Damien Hirst, paying homage to a number of his contemporaries. Signed on the back of the jacket by Hirst, and the book itself signed by the author.
An unusual signed Hirst limited edition, which you should be able to pick up for ยฃ100-150 in fine condition. I have seen the jackets framed, but this one is sitting firmly on my book shelves.....

Harland Miller Show, by trapnel1 on Apr 19, 2016 23:54:17 GMT 1, I'd also love to hear some insights from fans on his work. Personally, I don't get the contemporary artists that mainly deal in text, i.e. Harland Miller, Christopher Wool, and Richard Prince's Joke pieces. What is the appeal here beyond a clever slogan? I'm a big fan of text-based art. Not all of it, of course, just as nobody likes all visual art. All of us think differently. Some think more visually (including most art lovers, I would imagine) or mathematically, while others are more linguistic. I have always loved books and reading, and that underpins my fondness for text based art.
I have a Robert Montgomery piece and two HMs on the walls (a large International Lonely Guy and a smaller High on Hope OG). In each case the words have or had a particular resonance for me at a phase in my life. Just as the taste and smell of the Madeleine triggered for Proust the involuntary memory trail of Remembrance of Things, or the sound of Norwegian Wood on the landing of the aircraft leads to the story in Murakami's novel of the same name, so the sight of HMs text invariably brings memories and associations to mind of which I never tire.
Added to which, they are visually attractive!

Banksy Artwork, VALUATION, by trapnel1 on Apr 11, 2016 16:32:24 GMT 1, Hello Banksy Wall and Piece book any ideas of the price for a first edition with dust jacket ? One just sold on Ebay for ยฃ169.00, I would personally value one at between ยฃ300-ยฃ400 but have seen them for sale for over a grand. Banksy hype as it is, it's what someone is willing to pay for one.
Another copy in worse condition sold for ยฃ175 a couple of months ago, so I think the above valuation for a mint copy is realistic from a private seller. The few copies available from booksellers at the moment which I am aware of are ยฃ750 up, but not selling.
You could have picked a VG copy up for around ยฃ100 a year ago without too much difficulty, so prices are definitely on the way up.
The first printing is the only one worth collecting. A minority were issued with the dustjacket. Copies without the dustjacket should be less than ยฃ50. I think the cards were available separately as well as with the book - I'm sure someone can confirm.
Facsimile dustjackets are relatively common for expensive first editions. Haven't seen any for Wall and Piece yet but it's probably only a matter of time.......

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 10, 2016 12:01:35 GMT 1, Back in 2001, Banksy did the cover for the reissue of Nick Cave's ' And the Ass Saw the Angel' So this is the only Banksy novel cover (unless someone suggests otherwise!), done for the Penguin paperback reissue of Nick Cave's 1989 novel. Anyone know how this came about? Was the image done specially for the book? Is Banksy friendly with Nick Cave? Where is the original? (With Nick Cave?)

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 4, 2016 21:41:42 GMT 1, Another Kai And Sunny cover using their Just an Illusion image Kai & Sunny seem to have a sideline in book cover design.... they list quite a few on their website.
They have done a few of David Mitchell's and there was a letterpress edition of a new short story by him (now sold out) at their recent Stolenspace show.
Mitchell lived in Japan for a number of years, and as well as writing an introduction to this book translated it from Japanese with his wife. He also has a son with autism, so has a special interest in the subject.

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 3, 2016 12:28:31 GMT 1, DOWN WITH THE KINDLE!!!!!!!!! Despite my overwhelming love of books (as objects), I do use the Kindle App a lot. The vast majority of my books are hardcover, and travelling with them was always inconvenient, as well as the difficulty of not causing any minor damage. Indeed, sometimes nowadays I buy the Kindle version as well as a hardcover, the first to read and the second for the collection (I'm sure I'm not alone in this).
There are a lot of similarities with prints - not least that the vast majority of books are destined to be almost worthless, while a small number will have sustained value far beyond their purchase price...... And just as I won't buy a piece of art that I don't like, so I won't but a book I don't want to read!

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 3, 2016 11:49:23 GMT 1, My twopenith worth: Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho, cover illustration by Marshall Arisman I know this cover, but wasn't familiar with Marshal Arisman.....
Despite this being a major American Novel, it was only published as a paperback in the US so this was the first hardcover edition in English (Picador, 1998) which definitely boosts its desirability. The first printing is currently over ยฃ100.... There was a 2012 American Hardcover from Centipede Press (200 copies only) which is significantly more expensive.

Banksy Laugh Now Print, by trapnel1 on Apr 3, 2016 10:16:14 GMT 1, 1. Date. When astroboy identified it as a sketch for Pulp Fiction, I asked about the date of that work and elicited a quip from trapnel1 about April First (I originally planned to put this up for sale on eBay starting on April Fools' day, for added irony, but now I'm looking at May Day bank holiday w/e.) The quip was in relation to your apparent lack of awareness of what the sketch represented, rather than the date of origin! However, I'm enjoying the thread and looking forward to seeing where this shaggy dog story will end up.......

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 2, 2016 20:24:38 GMT 1, I'm currently getting my books shelved after a house move. I've collected books for years, long before I purchased any significant art - mainly first edition literary fiction (surely there must be one or two other collectors here?).
With first edition fiction, the cover is a critical part of the package (and condition makes a huge difference). I'm interested in compiling a list of covers designed by the artists we talk about here. Not catalogues or art books, just fiction. I don't think there will be many (why not?), but I'm ready to be surprised. There's a wealth of knowledge here to be shared...
I'll kick things off with the cover to Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, which I only recently found out was designed by Kai and Sunny. Published by Sceptre in 2004 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize - also a good read, which is definitely not always the case! Not a particularly rare book, but ยฃ100 plus for a fine first edition....
